Bovine growth hormone. This is a big topic of debate here in WI, seeing as we used to be the #1 producer of dairy products(that title now belongs to California). Is it safe? Or is the argument against it just another way of scaring the masses?

Animals love the sun. Cows in North Dakota or Minnisota cant be to happy walking around in -30 below zero snow storms.

One of the campaigns California has is

"Happy Cheese comes from a happy Cow"

it's the sun!

Well I'm sure the cows do enjoy the weather more in California. The sad truth is, the farms in California are very big, and they are own by large corporations or the govt. These farms in CA have hundreds of cows, and everything is done by machines. Here in WI most of the farms are owned by 4th and 5th generation farmers. These farmers do the majority of there work themselves and by hand. The family owned farms tend to only have a few dozen cows at the very most. Over the last 10 to 15 years alot of farms have disappeared, because they can't keep up with these bigger govt. or corporate farms. Pretty soon, the milk you drink and use will be govt. controlled. Then we wont have a say in what hormones or additives they add to milk or dairy products.

Anyways, all the cows in California are flaky and rude. Not the warm hospitality of Mid-western cows.

I'd rather eat old school farm raised beef rather than something coroporately or govt grown. I just can tell a difference and so can most people. Cows that are allowed to graze, rather than stand and eat all day, just taste better too.

Is it true that some families only have a dozen head or so Templeton? My ex fiance's family moved up to WI, Athens area, and bought a 300acre farm after selling an 80acre farm in IN. They increased their cattle from 20 head to 50 head. They are a Class C dairy farm (meaning cheese, yogurt, etc). They have 8 milking stansions instead of the 4 on their other farm and it doesn't take horribly long to get the milking done. About 2hrs worth of milking and an hour or so to round them up, throw hay, and dump grain. They do that twice a day. About 7am and again at 4pm. Last I heard from them they weren't doing too bad. I've also never known them to use hormones, in 4yrs of helping them on the farm. God I miss farm work.

Yes The_Real that is true about some families only have a dozen or so cows. I have a friend who's family switched to just raising veal calves because they couldn't make enough money from milking. Though that is not always the case. As far as BGH goes, most of the people that I've talked to around here, dislike it. There are others that say it's a non issue. http://www.jsonline.com/news/Metro/apr99/990412schismoverbghinmilkon.asp
