Is my friend mentally ill?
This is serious, not a troll post. Mods, sorry if this belongs in "head shrinkers"...move it there if it does, just thought since it's about my friend I would post it in S&A
Ok so my friend, we will call him Jay..used to be "normal", then our senior year he started to act "weird"..like, liking goth music, well this was weird for him because he had always liked rap..Well a a year or 2 of him dressing in black and painting his fingers black, all of our friends ditched him and I have kinda been the only one who stuck around because that's what friends do..
Well last week he has been getting too weird, he financed a coffin and has been sleeping in it in his apartment, he says he is a "dead vampire"...ok?? i'm trying to be a real friend here but I don't know if I can stick around for this crap anymore, seriously..the thing that set me over the top is, he bought like 5 mice from the pet store and completely murdered them and ate their guts..
I really wanna help my friend but im not sure how?

lol wut. yes he is mentally ill if he is eating the entrails of mice and lives in a coffin. i would have thought that was obvious. but i have a sneaking suspicion this is a troll attempt based on the rapix influx of 'vampire kids' after reading gay books like twilight and the proceeding south park episode based on mentioned fad.

Honestly, I really wish it was, but it's%20not..i'm thinking to just ditch him and let him do his own thing but then the loyalty card comes in..and please don't think im a troll because I really need advice on what to do..he has just become so weird its unreal and I am stumped on what to do.

Generally, you have a mental ilness when you abnormal behaviour starts to cause problems in your everyday life. So it depends, he could be metnally ill.
On what you should do: That's a hard question. You can't force yourself into liking him. You can't force him into being normal. Think hard about your friendship. Do you want to end it because he's behaving weird and people are looking at you as "the friend of that weirdo" or do you want to end it because he has become a completely different person and you don't like him anymore? If it's the latter, nothing lasts forever, even friendship doesn't. You stick with your friends, no matter what, but when they have become completely different people, you don't have to like the new person they've become. Or maybe you've changed, he's always been a weirdo, and you are just starting to dislike it.
I don't really know what to say here, this is a choice you have to make yourself. However, if people give you shit for being friends with him but you still like him, fuck the gossippy bitches and stay friends with him. If you really don't like him anymore, you can try talking with him about it ("Dude, you're really acting kinda creepy lately. I mean, sleeping in coffins? What the fuck? Maybe you're taking this whole 'goth' lifestyle a bit too serious.") or you can just quit hanging out with him. That is what we call a "contradiction in terms". Liking rap is probably as much a sign of mental instability as sleeping in a coffin! It certainly means he is musically challenged if nothing else.
OK, in all seriousness now the 'gothic' behaviour isn't worrying. Sleeping in a coffin may seem whack but in itself it isn't a cause for concern-infact in gothic circles it is considered normal (although REAL goths wouldn't be seen dead in a coffin, let alone sleep in one).
What is worrying is the mouse thing.
Very worrying.
Everyone knows that mice should be eaten roman style with honey and never the guts.

Anyways, I tried to talk to him..I asked him what was bothering him..He said he "he found himself"..ehh,, whatever that means..you try asking a dude who tried to file his teeth but failed lol
Anyways, I am his friend. I really don't wanna "ditch him"..because he has been my friend for years, it would be easy to if he was my friend for a week...but he has been my friend for years.
I have talked to him about seeing a shrink...but I can't commit him legally( I actually called a hospital just wondering.) or morally..They do not see this as an "emergency"...only said to "book an appointment with a counselor" ok? like how do I commit my friend to see a counselor
only thing I was thinking of is, when he is at work, take the coffin out and burn it..
but I would feel bad because he is still paying on it and his dumbass would most likely finance a new one. |

In all honesty, I think this is his rebellion to escape from the cage that popularity is. He probably never really felt like that was him in the past and now that he found something that was able to even slightly define him, so he ran with it because it's better than being a total fake. He could also genuinely enjoy his new grasp on life ...and death.
I never claimed to be anything and did what I liked. I was deemed "gothic" and a freak on numerous occasions. I grew my hair out, dye it black, wore black clothes, and basically lived in the graveyard for 4-5 years. Also, coffins are a fucking awesome way to get a good night's sleep - so warm and cuddly with no light or sound at all.
It could be that he has an obsession with death like I had. I can't really say anything bad. I can still remember how intoxicating it was to be able to love both equally. I grew out of some of it but a lot of it still helps define me.
Basically, talk to him and tell him that his current behavior of slaughtering mice and consuming their entrails is not only publicly unacceptable but a risk to his health. Just be a concerned friend because he is most likely looking for someone that is true and not just another fake piece of shit scene kid.

Hide garlic, crosses and holy water all over his place. Once he discovers he's been living with these things and hasn't died maybe he'll give up the charade.
Or fill his fridge full of live bats. When he goes to get his daily dose of refridgerated mouse guts or blood or whatever they'll attack him. If he's frightened he's not a real vampire.
In all seriousness it's sounds like he is wanting attention a little too much, and what began as a way for friends and mommy and daddy to feel sorry about him, has gone to his head and he might just believe it himself. He needs a shock into reality.
