Absolutely this. OP, is you want some decent ideas,

The City-building series has got to be one of my favorite. I practically spent a quarter of my childhood playing Caesar II, and III. These games have sparked what are now amongst my favorite subjects and topics. These games taught me to be rigorous, attentive, and logical. They combine what are to me fun aspects such as management, economics, and war.
Caesar III is good, although it does have some drawbacks, though most are purely technical. The biggest, I would say, is that you can only grow a city out to a certain extent. Now, you can build anywhere on land you'd like, but after the 17000 population mark, the game has sort of a bug-you can't build anymore. There's too much data for the game to handle. Oh well. In all my years, only like 3 cities got so large anyways, so for most this problem is non-existent.
Pharaoh, however, fixed up almost every flaw that Caesar had. Stupendous job on the designer's part. This game is absolute tops. Check it out if the genre appeals to you. But again, after reaching the 35000 population milestone or so, the game gets screwy, and while not explicitly forbidding any more construction, it seems to stop growth off at that point.
While Caesar and Pharaoh are both similar, Zeus is a bit different. Mythology is expanded on, and military control is much better. However, the difficulty I've encountered in making custom maps has really soured me to this game. Have any of you guys that own Zeus figured out how to make custom maps? I'd appreciate it. The game-provided maps have far too little farmland for the most part.
There's also a fourth one, Emperor. I've never played it, but judging from the box art, it looks quite similar to Zeus. That's not an inherently bad thing, mind you

.
Oh, and apparently, they've made a fourth installment to the Caesar series. It blows hardcore peen, from what I've read. It was designed by a company that seems to give a disgusting spin to
every single game they make, Tilted Mill. God, how I hate thee bastards. They killed Sim City, ya know'?

Also, you might want to look into turn-based strategy games, the most prominent being Civilization, obviously. Again, Civilization II was a staple of my childhood. RTS games are similar to Civilization, but aren't generally as good. The Age of Empires series is among my favorites, though.
Hope this helped. Oh, and seriously, any of you guys ever figure out how to make custom maps on Zeus?
