Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
Ont ime when i was like 10 on a plane to ft lauderdale.
It made a hard landing and a bunch of those oxygen mask things dropped out of the compartments.
That was pretty scary. Especially since a bunch of old people started screaming that they wanted to get out of the plane.

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
While taking some shitty charter plane to turkey I had a pretty scary experience. The plane was a piece of shit. We had the pleasure of waiting in the plane when they decided to cut the power and work on the plane right before we left. Half way through the flight there was some minor turbulence and the suddenly the plane drops several hundred feet for probably 5 seconds. It was funny watching people scream and fly out of their seats.

I refuse to fly until the end of this month when I'll be 21 and can drink midflight. At least if I'm drunk I won't know that shit's gone wrong until ... wait, I won't know. Fuck it.

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
Got put in a holding pattern over Texas due to thunderstorms. So here we are flying THROUGH these huge developing thunderheads and we start to run out of fuel, so the pilot comes on the intercom and says we need to make an urgent landing at College Station to refuel. We fly around in the turbulence and darkening skies waiting to be cleared to land, and finally we are able to come in for the final approach.
We end up SLAMMING into the runway much harder than most landing gear maintenance guys would probably recommend. We guessed that there probably wasn't enough fuel left to make a second approach so the pilot had to make the landing count.
The ground crews were bitching that it wasn't a scheduled landing so the pilot had to come out and negotiate with the fuel guys. Turns out the pilot was some old geezer probably close to mandatory retirement.
I guess old people are about as good at flying as they are at driving.

Pretty hard landing in snow in northern Finland and the tip of the wing was only about an inch from hitting the ground.

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
^^ What the hell is up with all these half-assed posts masquerading as humor? Go read Nuclearwinter's thread
Anyways, I had a pretty bad experience flying into Denver a couple of years ago. I was to be visiting some family who lived there, but on the tarmac I damn near felt like that'd never happen. It was December, and the runway was pretty slick, and the pilot came close to skidding off.
None too bad, though. All 'cause of Winter weather, mostly...

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
Our plane was coming in for a landing in Tokyo. There was a huge thunder storm in the area.
The pilot makes an approach but it's to rough. We have to go around and use the other end on the runway.
The pilot comes in for an approach and the friggin storm moved. The plane start going down and going around huge thunder clouds. Left, right, up and down.
All of a sudden, the plane slide into a cloud. We drop a whole bunch of feet and we get hit by a lightning. The lights went out, the engine went out and everything not bolted to the floor start floating in the air toward the ceiling. Emergency power come on. All in a matter of seconds. Then we hit the bottom of the drop and the plane shoots up. Needless to say that everything that was floating abruptly started to come down. The overhead panels fly open and everything start flying around. I am looking out the window and can't see shit but heavy rain.
All of a sudden, I see the ground and the plane slams down on the runway.
It was kind of funny to see people coming out of the plane with all kinds of cuts and bruises and we didn't crash.

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
1. Took an 18 hour flight, Beijing to Chicago, with a crying baby on board.
2. When I was a kid I was in a little 6-seater charter plane when the passenger door suddenly blew open at altitude. All the maps and shit starting swirling around the cabin and we had to make an emergency landing to close it. It wasn't that scary, really, it wasn't like we had lost control.
3. Flying RyanAir around Europe...just rough landings and shit. And their fucking seats don't lay back.

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
On a flight to Hong Kong I landed during a thunderstorm; went right through a cloud only to hit severe turbulence and descend at least 300 feet. My stomach dropped like a fucking rollercoaster. It sounded like a gun went off right outside the window. I hate flying.

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
Every time you get behind the wheel of a car, you're a steering wheel turn away from piles of twisted muscle tissue, and fat globs busting through the severed remains of a torsoe. When you're flying, there is nothing for the plane to hit, and no reason for the wings to fall off. It is not logical to fear flying.

The only flaw to your theory is that if a car stalls, you can simply roll to the side of the road. If a plane stalls, well, at least you have a little while before making your final impact.

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
Does anyone remember the attempted trans Atlantic airline bombings of '06?
Probably not.
Funniest part is, turns out the entire thing was just fear mongering, an attempt to renew public support for the middle east conflict.
On 8 September 2008 after more than 50 hours of deliberations, the jury did not find any of the defendants guilty of conspiring to target aircraft. The jury found Ali, Sarwar and Hussein guilty of conspiracy to murder charges but was unable to reach verdicts on charges relating to the alleged plot to blow up aircraft in respect of them.
The jurors were unable to reach verdicts on those charges or conspiracy to murder charges as well on conspiracy to detonate explosives on aircraft against Ibrahim Savant, 27, of Stoke Newington, Umar Islam, 30, of Plaistow, and Waheed Zaman, 24, and Arafat Waheed Khan, 27, both of Walthamstow, all London. Mohammad Gulzar, 27, of Barking, east London, was found not guilty on all counts.
Prior to the arrests, the plot was discussed at a high level of government, with then Prime Minister Tony Blair knowing about it for months, and alerting President George Bush to the investigation on Sunday 6 August 2006.[31]
On 9 August, hours before the arrests, the then Home Secretary John Reid gave a major speech to Demos (a British think-tank) hinting at a new round of anti-terror legislation and claiming that the country was facing "probably the most sustained period of severe threat since the end of the second world war".[32] The following day Reid broke the news along with Douglas Alexander, the Transport Secretary.

A plane at full altitude can glide for about 100 miles where it can make an emergency landing in an appropriate spot :)

Re: scariest experience flying on an airplane?
I once hit an air pocket when flying to Japan. It sucked. For those who don't know what an air pocket is, it's where there's like really really light air or something in this pocket, and when a plane flies into it, it can't keep itself up, like if your on ground and you walk into a pool of water, you can't keep walking on the water, its not dense enough.
Anyways, the plane dropped outta the sky... well actually, it dropped outta the air pocket, it kept falling until we could push on through again, it was so fucking scary, because the plane just falls, and you get the massive falling sensation. It sucks. I seriously thought I was going to die.
Everyone tripped out.

I trained as a pilot for many a hour, I did stall recovery over and over.
It doesn't just stall -> ground.
You have a good while to glide and re-start engine or plot an emergency landing.

I remember that shit - it's why we can't take fucking water bottles on flights any more, isn't it? These guys were supposedly going to mix up some liquid explosive in mid flight which in reality requires a lab and distillation equipment and all that, but it was a enough to spook the population into handing over their Fruitopia at the metal detector.
