| Cunning Linguists Languages and their use. What languages do you speak and why? What do words really mean? Can you say things in one language that you can't say in another? Should there be a national language? How many languages should a person know and what are they? |

German, easy to learn?
Full first post recovered from the forum's own RSS feed - reply count unknown.
Scenario:
I'm an engineering student, who has failed several courses and need to take a few more courses to make up for lost credits.
Options:
Take a course of pure memorizing cases of natural disasters with pop quizzes
-OR-
Take a German 100 course with one spot left with an old lady reported to very nice. I do not know about the difficulty.
Should I take German 100? I have given learning German by myself an attempt in the past and stopped, not because it got too hard but I was lazy. I dont know how I'll find the learning German since my previous attempt was small.
I do find learning a language in a classroom setting greatly ineffective compared to learning a language myself.
Does anyone who has taken German as a second language have any comments?

Re: German, easy to learn?
I took German in high school and found it to be fairly straight forward esspecially compared to french. However I feel that advanced German is much more complicated. I will point out that German is a good language for an engeneer to learn (even if only the basics) as in europe they are a large manafacturing country.
All the best

Re: German, easy to learn?
I did four years of German in high school, and I thought that it was very similar to English in some respects; so in that way, it might be easy to learn. However, I found the rules surrounding the articles and conjugation pretty tiring and cumbersome after a while, so I gave it up. The language I'm learning right now, Japanese, is so much easier in that respect.
I always thought Mark Twain did a good job of summing up the difficulties with German in his diatribe, The Awful German Language (http://www.crossmyt.com/hc/linghebr/awfgrmlg.html). Funny stuff!

Aw fuck
Did not get the prof i thought i was going to get. The one i got still seems pretty nice but i guess he's new. Dont know how hard he marks.
Should i just give up now and take economics? THe prof in that is a good lecturer but his exams are fucken hard.
If i dropped german, i would have to wake up at 6:30 too.
