so i am quitting methadone.

how long do withdrawals last and how long after i quit will it be untill i get to the worst part?

i googled it, apparently its different for everyone. it sucks balls.

i feel tired as fuck
and exhausted
and sick all the time
and i have a constant headache.

i just dont want to do anything except take more pills...

I feel for ya bro, I've been battling opiates for years now. As a matter of fact, I just ran out of suboxone (as planned) so here goes my 3rd 'real' kick.

Don't expect miracles. Acute methadone withdrawal can last up to 5-6 weeks depending on how much you were using and how long. Generally, it will get 'the worst' between weeks 1-2.... by week 3 it should be easing up. On average, most people feel much better and start to sleep within a month. After the acute w/d, you're gonna be dealing with PAWS.... so you'll have to stay strong. For now, just hang in there. Smoke, drink, hang out with non-users.... just do whatever to pass the time. Remember that if you slip up and abuse now, you will warp yourself back almost to the beginning of W/D.

From my experience, if you can afford an opiate habit, you can afford rehab. You just have to put back the money you would be spending on pills and save it for a week or two.

If you really think you can handle the WDs, go ahead. It will be more than worth it in the end. I couldn't. Usually by the third day I was going insane and writhing on the floor among other things. Minutes come to feel like days. If you can handle this for weeks, you are stronger than me and I give you props.

I'm currently on suboxone and it is working for me really well. They have me on (4) 8mg a day, but I usually only take one or two...it is providing me with a little extra Christmas money. If the cold turkey doesn't do it for you, I would highly recommend suboxone. Don't go for methadone. I was inclined to go that route at first so I could still get high, but I made a decision to go the other way and actually take the "road to recovery" so to speak.

If you are by chance on a methadone program and not getting it off the street, I would switch to suboxone rather than going cold turkey.

But enough rambling. I'm sure you know about your options. I've been there. You just have to actually get the balls to change your habits.

If you're in hell, it will seem like forever. As for a precise timespan, it depend greatly on the length and severity of your habit. You'll pull through the worst in a couple of days, but the itch will be there, always.

well see, im in highschool and ive been getting my drugs off the street. it is christmas break and that is why im quiting now. ive tried before and i just can miss that much school. i got till jan. 6 until school starts. do you all think ill be getting things together by then? or should i just wait till summer? its only been like three days since i quit.

Your parents will figure out whats up eventually. If you spend weeks puking, sweating, shaking, and living in the bathroom without telling them why, they're gonna think you're dying. Then they'll take you to the ER and the doctors there will tell them why you're sick.

So you might as well tell them the truth and ask for help getting cleaned up. Plus, if you're serious about quitting, having your parents know about your past will reduce your chances of relapsing.

They'll be more cautious about what they let you do, and may even piss test you or do whatever else they need to make sure you're not usng. But, that extra enforcement could be what keeps you clean. And, since they'll know about your past, you'll be able to talk to them when you have cravings, or just generally rely on them for support.

My parents were worth fuck all when it came to help, but maybe his will be better.

For what it's worth, they are your parents and they do deserve to know, but you have to be serious about kicking the habit if you choose to be honest with them, weakness induced rebound aside, you have to WANT to give it up.

And when I say "want" ... well, I suppose you would know what that means, so let me ask you: do you want to quit?

Unless you have no more access to opiates at all, there is no reason for anybody to go through the pain of cold turkey. That bullshit about needing to go through that pain to help assure you don't go back to using is just that. Bullshit. I've known many a person who said that very thing as they went through going their 5th cold turkey. So obviously that doesn't work as a deterrent.

Why did you go to that? Go back to whatever opiate you were hooked on, remember how much that high kicked ass? That wonderful rush of feelings and euphoria that would flood your brain in a matter of seconds? The experience being like when you're almost to the top of the rollercoaster and that breath taking ride is about to happen.... Why leave that behind? There's no reason or point to quit, you still want to do it and no one has a problem with you doing it, you felt on top of the world when you got high. It wont ruin anything.

One thing you may consider is switching over to a short acting opiate before withdrawaling. That way you can taper down easier and withdrawal wont last nearly as long.

I'm not sure you can actually do this without having to go partway through 'done WD's anyway.

ok so i think im going to try to quit using smaller and smaller doses.

i take different amounts because they work differently for some reason

some times 100mg would do it
then the next day it wouldnt be near enough
then the day after it was way to much
thats why its hard to quit
i look for the high at a certain dose
it works for a couple days
maybe even long enough to go down to 90
and that works for a couple days
then the next day i take it and get NOTHING
so i take a little more that day
but not 10mg or 20mg its been to long
so i take another ninety
time goes by
i feel it
but its not the same
and im out of pills
so the next day i go back up to 100mg because im scared i wont get my fix and it will be a waste.

anyway, i guess i can deal w/ it.
i use to take a 150 milligrams a day
then i quit for the first time cold turkey and couldnt do it

i did that a couple times and now my average is about 100mg a day

Of course you can't think straight your getting off opiates. But going and taking more every time things become difficult will get you to relapse sooner or later, sooner in your case.

I went through what your going through not too long ago. I tapered down to 10mg, and even then the withdrawal lasted for well over a month. But suboxone will help, and if your looking for some find a junkie around a clinic, they are always looking to get rid of there pills to get some quick cash.

Methadone builds in the system over time if dosed daily. Meaning you still have methadone running through your blood. I took methadone for a month and a half and it took me 5 days to even start to feel withdrawals.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that is how it is. if you go back to it, it will just be worse the next time you try to quit. if I were you I would switch to a short acting opiate/oid and then stablize(become dependant on that) and then try to quit. For me the acute withdrawal from methadone was not at all as intense as from more short acting opiates like morphine but it was very long and drawn out. Most say it is more horrible and more intense than heroin, that was not the case for me.

How long will it last? It could be a week, half month,month, or even a year for methadone maybe longer. the acute withdrawal will probably last 14days to 1month. My general rule of thumb for mdone is that for as long as you took it that how long before you will feel 100% normal. Im not saying you will be in acute withdrawal for a year but you may not feel 100% for that long or even longer due to post acute withdrawals. It varies from person to person. you should have known what you were getting into before you started it. some people get off mdone and still have PAWS or post acute withdrawals six years after they quit.

Here I was surrounded by my family and my so-called mates and I've never felt so alone, never in all my puff. Since I was on remand they've had me on this program, the state-sponsored addiction, three sickly sweet doses of methadone a day instead of smack. But it's never enough, and at the moment it's nowhere near enough. I took all three this morning and now I've got eighteen hours to go till my next shot and a sweat on my back like a layer of frost. I need to visit the mother superior for one hit, one fucking hit to get us over this long, hard day.
