Fun w/ Coinstar
Has anyone had any experience with Coinstar machines? These seem like they could be profitable. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Edit -- Posting in "Bad Ideas" was a bad idea. I was asking a legitimate question. I am not a bad ideas guy anyhow. Just trying to point out something that may (or may not) have been beneficial to the forum. I guess it wasn't. I don't need your pre-teen flame wars. Good luck in prison.

How could it be profitable i thought they took 18-25% out for "taxing and servicing"...?
I've never used em I prefer to buy a coiner myself from a novelty store for like 5 bucks and it counts coins and you can cash it at a bank put it on a gift card ect if you needed.

Re: Fun w/ Coinstar
I read on here a way to bypass their cockcucking fee is to unplug the phone cord (usualy behind the machine) and then when it's done counting your change, push gift receipt. It won't be able to run it through the system or whatever so it just prints a cash receit without the fee.

except you can't reach the phone plug at all because they are always pushed up right against the wall.
like.. go try to do that scheme sometime. they don't leave plugs to machines exposed or you could just fuck with everything.

Re: Fun w/ Coinstar
The local coinstars are pushed into a small wall indent. :( Only way to get to the wire is to pull the machine out.

Re: Fun w/ Coinstar
They do take a certain percentage out for "taxes" or a deposit. Some stupid bullshit like that. Used one a couple years ago, had like $80 in change one time. Went through the process, only got like 65 bucks. It sucked mostly because I planned to put like 50 in my tank, and use the rest for beer and cigs. Only had enough for the beer, and ended up waiting a week to get the cigs. ( Carton)
The portable coin counter is a good investment if you plan to use it more than once. I have one that I use to wrap coins. That way I can take them to the bank and get FULL profit.

Years ago I worked at a Bi-Lo Supermarket, We had a key to the front cover which gave us access only to the inside of the slide tray in case of money jams, from there you could disconnect the thermal printer from the cpu of the machine and connect it to a laptop loaded with a template from MS Word and Barcode Magic. Meaning you could print the "money certificates" take them to another store that cashed in Coinstar receipts and reap your reward.

Re: Fun w/ Coinstar
coinstars are for money inept faggots and lazy faggots. period. anyone with any common sense or value of money would just take it to a bank if it's a large amount or your local gas station if it's small. i take like $15 in change all the time to my 711 to get it changed out you just have to count it out for them no big deal..

Re: Fun w/ Coinstar
You could try a old fashioned approach.
1)Gloves +hoody.
2)Wait around corner
3)Mug the guy with the money.
4)Calmly walk off.
:D
Or try turning it off and on, and see what the start up options are.

The front keypad is a "generic usb device" and Coinstar OS has usb ports disabled until the the drivers for them have booted up once its ran its system diagnostics and is ready to operate. I'm telling you the only worthwhile way to fraud a Coinstar machine is to hijack it's thermal printer and print fake vouchers on it's special paper. And at that, you are only really ripping off the place that cashes in the vouchers. Once the Coinstar rep comes to redeem the paid out vouchers and cut a check to the place who did the initial payout, they will find out that they are bogus vouchers and tell the place that did the payout "oh well, you got scammed."

Uh, if you're not really putting anything valuable into it in the first place???
The beauty of it is that it doesn't set off an alarm if any slugs are detected, it just quietly rejects them. So plenty of room for theoretical experimentation.
It prints off a slip to bring to the cashier, maybe here, in theory, is the weak spot.
