going to gunshows I can never find the real thing but romanian versions etc, is there any difference in the speed and quality of a shot or weight?

SVD's have milled receivers, so they should weigh a little more.

I was able to shoot ~0.5" groups at around 70 yards with the stock scope and Romanian surplus ammo with my brother's Romak. The stock scope is decent for what it's made for, but it's too underpowered for good accuracy at long range. I couldn't tell you which is the most accurate, though.

The SVD has a much nicer trigger.

Beyond that, it's a collector's piece. Still has merely good accuracy that doesn't justify the $3000+ price tag.

If you want an investment, buy an SVD. For plinking and target practice, you'll be much happier with a $700 PSL.

If you REALLY want to spend 3000$ on a nice svd go for it its a collectors item and they aint getting any cheaper but I doubt you do. I have a psl it is NOT a "romanian dragunov" dont let people sweet talk you like that.

For information this helped me alot http://www.dragunov.net/ it has everything you need to know and for buying a psl and on rare occasions an svd (if you really want it) use this place http://gunbroker.com/ you will rarely come across an svd being sold but it does happen.

Like I said I have a psl its easier to maintain and more reliable (not saying the dragunov isnt reliable but you cant beat the ak design) and you easily get the same accuracy just DONT get one made buy those faggots in Tennessee make sure its imported by CAI.

Edit: I just look and your in luck theyre actually selling a tiger(the sporting version of the svd) it has a shorter barrel amongst other nerfs.

What do you mean speed and quality of a shot? Do you mean the accuracy? It may be more accurate than the clones. But there is always exceptions. Speed of the shot? the round is going to effect the velocity. Different rounds have different velocities.

The dragunov SVU bulpup is pretty crazy looking.

Does the timing of this post have anything to do with the recent release of the Dragunov SVD on Combat Arms, or am I just that lame?

Are you talking about the tokarev you posted? or the SVD?

oh, and OP, the SVD usually runs for about 5K now, not 3K, And the romak or PSL has a machine gun receiver, like the yugo M91, machine gun receivers are built with the trigger group in contact or just aft of the mag well, The SVD was built from the ground up as a marksmans rifle so you wont see that, also dont buy a PSL because its receiver causes a change in point of impact depending on how much pressure you put on the weapon forward of the receiver, ie if you rest the end of foregrip on a hard surface the POI will shift, it was built cheap but functional.

The SVD isn't free-floated up front, either. Putting excessive torque on the handguard or using a sling can affect the POI. While it will likely make less of an impact than it would on the stamped receiver of a PSL, it's still possible. Compare this to a more modern sniper rifle such as the PSG-1 or the M40--both use free-floated barrels to ensure consistent accuracy.

If you rezero your scope regularly, any barrel flexing over time should be compensated for, correct?

If the barrel is bending and staying that way, you've got bigger problems :D. I'm talking about temporary flex caused by force placed on the barrel. Attaching a sling to the gas block on an AK and snugging it up tight as a brace will steady you. It will likely flex the barrel slightly, too, and change your POI. When you let go, the barrel should return to its previous position. Bipods can do this. The POI on SKSs and M44s often change depending on whether the bayonet is extended. Suppressors affect it.

Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6BpI3xD6h0

As you can see, barrels tend to oscillate during firing. Applying a force anywhere on the barrel will affect this. A bull barrel will help to minimize this. A free-float tube helps to ensure that this oscillation remains consistent, so that your shots will do the same. Heat makes the barrel more flexible, thus your groups open up after a couple quick mag dumps. Unless you're running a machine gun or your prying things open with the barrel, though, you shouldn't have permanent deformation happening.

I see. Of course, if you maintain consistency in how you hold the gun it shouldn't matter, then, should it? With the Romak, the little case that should come with it is made to support the weapon when it is filled with four magazines. My brother and I use it to steady our shots, and it may be necessary to hold it with the hand, thus the forces will most likely not be the same because of the handling inconsistencies.

However, I remain unconvinced that neither the Dragunov nor Romak will suffer any sort of significant innacuracy by handling as long as you shoot within it's design parameters; that is, suppressing enemy soldiers in range of a 4x scope. ;)

The SVD is not a sniper rifle, people. I know the regulars are aware of this fact.

It's good to about 500 yards... that is within designated marksman range.

I'd call it a sniper rifle based off the optics.

Definitely not an AMR, but more than just a DMR.

I'm sure there are say, many groups of 2 guys (or even just one guy on his own), a spotter and a shooter, that are trained to work just with each other, sit for days and take shots when presented with the SVD as primary weapon.

That's sniping in any ones language.

The fact of the matter is the SVD is good enough accuracy-wise to get the job done on the battlefield, but not exactly the weapon one would desire in a hostage situation.

Quite true. They'll both shoot minute-of-badguy within their effective range regardless of how you hold 'em. At the extreme ranges where it might make a difference, you're gonna need bionic eyes to nail anything with that PSO, and the 1200m irons are almost as silly as the 500m sights on the old Hi-Powers.

I disagree. The SVD was purpose-built to meet DMR specifications. Therefor, it's a DMR. Just because it can be used to snipe doesn't make it a sniper rifle. The same is true for the M14, which I have friends who use as designated marksmen.

I hate the term sniper rifle. Whether you think its any rifle with a scope, or any rifle in the hands of a sniper.

Ive seen insurgent snipers use pistols as primary weapons, to some effect.

The m14s in service with the Army are shit for the most part. I like the platform a lot, but nobody is knowledgeable about them these days and thus they are poorly maintained and never serviced. I recently got the fun task of installing all the EBR stocks(your "m39") on our battalions m14s, beacause word spread around that I had the tools and was an "m14 master" Assholes.

The EBR is heavy as hell, unless you have an m14 with a good barrel and match ammo (rare for an infantry company) your life still sucks.

We just got 4 m110s in, and they are fucking sweet. I still prefer the m24a2 due to the trigger, but the 110 does what is was designed to do. It can engage targets at 1000 meters, and can replace an m4/m16 lightening a soldiers load. All controls are also ambidextrous, which I personally havent seen on any other rifle yet. I'll post up some gun pron later. We also got some other goodies like Eagle Industries plate carriers, new rangefinders(no more math for me!), variable power binos and new spotting scopes. Apparently Leupold makes everything in cool guy tan these days.

I know one in particular in the 82nd used a plain Jane M14. I want to say it was actually converted to semi, too. This guy doesn't have email or anything, so unless I see him in person (which is infrequently and only when we're shooting together with another 82nd Airborne buddy), I can't ask as I don't have his number.
