so my question is pretty simple, whats the difference between the 2
in your opinion is fedora better? as in less bugs, more driver support?
me generally being a noob on the matter and im really just curious and thinking about giving it a try
also would it run on my pc. i got a toshiba satallite a105-s4384

Re: so whats the difference???
There isn't any difference in hardware support. Ubuntu has a lot more software in its repositories, though, and is known for being a lot more noob-friendly than Fedora. There's a reason why Ubuntu's popularity is skyrocketing and Fedora isn't really doing much.
Fedora 10 has been talked of a lot here because one of the mods is a big Red Hat devotee. It's ultimately a matter of taste, but it really looks like Ubuntu is kicking the crap out of Fedora at the moment.

Well, it's more popular for a reason. I haven't used Fedora much (at all) so I can't speak to it directly, but the Debian packaging system is known to be a lot better than Red Hat's and Ubuntu has a lot more software available to install. It's easy to get to know, and there's a massive community you can use for help and documentation.
If you're a noob, it doesn't really matter which one you install as long as you stick with it and learn the system. But it's going to be easier for a noob to learn Ubuntu because there are so many other people using it that can help you.

Sticking with something is the best thing you can do. If you distro-hop, you don't end up actually learning. Pick something and stay with it for a long time. That way you'll learn how to use and control the system.

Yeah right.
You couldn't find the end of the RPM manual page if your man pager used tail.

Ok you and PirateJoe both think one thing means another apparently I need an interpreter for what you are saying, without detail.
You go from better to easier relating to good and bad, bro.. just make up your mind then post.
If your definition of "better" is "easier" sure. I don't find RPM to be that difficult myself, I like it because it is more flexible and has many more options for doing just about anything you want that you could provide in a package management system, no I don't mean package management as in:
install this
remove that
That is not my definition of package management. Managing something requires much more.

I love it how people like Prometheum rant on about how Ubuntu is "known to be" 1000% better and easier to use than Fedora in every possible way...
...yet fail to actually provide any real, side-by-side examples.

Now maybe I am guilty of hyperbole, but not blatant lying... unless I somehow missed the bit where you actually backed up your claim that "Ubuntu is kicking the crap out of Fedora at the moment".

Hyperbole, blatant lying, about the same thing when you're quoting someone.
Here are some statistics:
- Ubuntu is AT THE TOP of distrowatch hit numbers for the past 12 months, 6 months, and 3 months. In the last 30 days OpenSuSe got the better of it, but as of the last 7 days it's rebounded back to the top. Fedora, even though it has had a major release more recently than Ubuntu, piddles around 7th place in the last week, and maintains around 4th place in all of the other statistics.
These are the google rankings for Ubuntu (blue), Fedora (red), and OpenSuSe (yellow). As you can see, Ubuntu is kicking the crap out of both of them. And, on the source page you can see that there's a massive international demand for Ubuntu as well.
- http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubunt...ate=all&sort=0 These are the google trends for searches of "ubuntu help", "fedora help", and "opensuse help". You can see that Fedora gets a peak every so often, but then goes down to zero, suggesting that it only attracts new users after certain events. Ubuntu, on the other hand, has had steady growth, which indicates a non-linear growth of new users.
- Fedoraforum.org statistics:

That is what I call an epic trounce. Look at the "Active Members" numbers, as well -- Ubuntu has THIRTY-TWO TIMES the active users.
I thought deus was referring to the deb vs. rpm argument, for which my only backup is a wikipedia page (and source) I can't find now and years of experience. But as to the Ubuntu vs. Fedora, I think we can safely say, with good support from objective statistics, that Ubuntu is kicking the crap out of Fedora right now.

Yea and Windows Vista alone is kicking the crap out of Ubuntu right now.
People choose Ubuntu over other distributions because their told it's friendlier, that and the massive amount of publicity generated by Shottleworth.
Let me remind you there was other distribution that aimed to be user-friendly before Ubuntu came in.
The only area Ubuntu did bring something new is it's 3 click installer and offering a single DE.

Ubuntu doesn't offer a single Desktop Environment (assuming that's what DE means). There's Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Fluxbuntu. Those are all "official" variants sponsored (to some extent) by Canonical. They only ship one desktop environment per CD to conserve space.
Also, I wouldn't say that Vista is kicking the crap out of anything. It's nearly impossible to get true Vista statistics, because vendors count even computers sold with XP on them as Vista machines.

I didn't realise by "kicking the crap out of' you purely meant 'has more users'.
What I thought you meant, and was asking you to back up, was that Ubuntu is actually better, or easier to use, in some way. eg: Why deb is better than RPM? etc...

Pr0: You're out of your mutherfucking mind son.
If you think for a second that the hit count on a single website, and the user base -requesting some sort of assistance- on a forum shows accurate statistics as to what is "more popular", or "easier to use" or "more user friendly" or whatever your definition of better is, you're not fooling me.
Do this though, find an official Ubuntu.com or other website official statistics for data transferred in the process of downloading the disk images, or something that shows a good representation of the total bandwidth used for people downloading the Ubuntu Linux distribution. We'll compare the statistical data between the two sites, the other one being FedoraProject.org for Fedora Linux.

I assume you're going to pull torrents.fedoraproject.org out? That's only one means of distribution; there's no way of finding out how many copies of the ISO's are downloaded in total are taking all means of distribution (ftp mirrors, http mirrors, jidgo, torrent, shipped CD's) into account.
And no, I'm not "trying to fool you". That's just the truth. The numbers are there. The distro to which you have a fanboi devotion to is losing. Take it like a fucking adult.

No, I did mean "has more users". That translates into "is more popular", which in turn is what the OP and I were discussing. When I was answering his question.
Tell me, do you even post in this forum anymore besides to try to troll me?
EDIT: Answered my own question. Deus's only posts in this forum since October 27th (the date of the last non-troll post) have been exclusively dedicated to attempting to troll me.

In the other thread we've posted in just today , I have not trolled you whatsoever. I have only asked you genuine questions, in an attempt to better understand your opinion.
I would also like to point out that since October, I've had 2 months of no internet access - due to matters outside of my own control.
I will of course, from now on, try and help people as best I can, but obviously, because unlike you, I have a life outside of the internet, by the time I get to respond to most threads, you've already, at least in 9/10 cases, told the OP to install Ubuntu, or had a rant at them for calling GNU/STFU, Linux....

Typically, mods are mods of a forum because they're consistently active and positive in that forum. You are neither to E*NIX.
We've had this exchange before. I've called you out for you doing nothing but trolling, you say you'll "try" to help people "as best you can" with the caveat that "you ahve a live outside the internet", and then you proceed to do nothing and continue being a drain on this forum.
And yes, in almost all cases, I will respond before you do. I'll answer the OP's question and actually contribute. You'll come along later to try to attack me personally (like you do in this post) and troll.
You contribute nothing to this forum, and now that we have our long-time mod back, I would think it's time for you to step down.

We should probably swap-out half the mods on Totse, then.
Now maybe mummy and daddy make sure you always have an internet connection, because last time it went out, you cried all night? For the rest of us however, we sometimes have periods where our access is patchy - and there's nothing we can do about it. Doesn't mean we should be demodded.

Telling everyone to install Ubuntu as a blanket solution, or having a go at anyone who dare call the OS "Linux", is not contributing. It's borderline trolling, and the reason 9/10 people who post here, along with the majority of the tech forum mods, think you're a grade-A idiot.
When you do help, which to be fair, you do, it comes with a bucket-full of preaching. You seem to be the chief evangelical for the Church of Free Software - and that sir, puts you on par with the Jehovah's witnesses that come knocking on my door. And by the same token, you kick off more when someone even suggests the use of a proprietary software package, than they do when I say there's no god.

See, I might be inclined to consider that, if there were actually anyone else calling for it, besides you and potentially a couple of your home boys.
To be honest, you're starting to sound quite jealous. Wish you were mod? ...suck it.

Belive it or not, if it wasn't for Pr0mtheum's constant argumentation and preaching of linux in other forums, E*NIX wouldn't get half of the traffic it has.
Most newcomers to this forum are already regulars.
Therefore your position here, as a moderator, is wired to this fact.

Re: so whats the difference???
I began with Ubuntu, but Gnome shitted me off so I've been hopping around since. Kubuntu was OK but lacked the integration that had been put into the Gnome spin. I tried Fedora 8, which was OK (it's still on my desktop box, though sits largely unused) - yum/rpm was SLOW, though; upgrades take forever to calculate. I don't know if this is because yum is in Python as opposed to machine code, or if the version of RPM was crap, or why; but it was slow. Not to mention chomping CPU cycles for the whole five minutes it takes to CALCULATE (not download) an update. Apparently this has improved greatly in Fedora 10, though I haven't used it personally.
I tried OpenSUSE 11.1 for about two weeks and managed to fuck it badly, but that could be largely because I couldn't wait for KDE 4.2 and did a shit job of managing the Unstable repo. It seemed OK, however again we have the issue of the distro's control centre vs. the desktop environment's control centre.
I just got a new Laptop and have put Sidux and prerelease KDE 4.2 on it - hell yes. Epic win. I highly recommend Sidux. It's pretty much Debian Unstable with a few helper scripts and repos thrown in to give you a stable system - so you end up with the cutting-edge-ness of Ubuntu without the 'I wish I could have a Mac but I can't afford it' feel.
Plus their forums aren't retarded like the Ubuntu Community.
EDIT: Specifically for you: the Ubuntu kernel has a patch to its Toshiba support that's been rejected in the mainline Linux kernel - this patch is not part of Sidux (or AFAIK any other distros I've used) and is not likely to be in future. You might have trouble with Bluetooth and other post-1995 laptop technologies if you don't feel like doing your own kernel. It's a liveCD like Ubuntu though, so try it and see how you feel.

Now this is one thing I can agree with Prometheum on. I've stuck with Slackware for years, and don't plan on switching to anything else. I would still advise any person who is looking into learning Linux and UNIX to start with Slackware.
