It's not improving the environment to plant trees, in the same way it's not helpful to comb your hair when you're bleeding to death. It may look nice, but neither of these actually improves the dire situation.
We don't need trees. What we need forests filled with elk, streams, bears, fish, birds, fungus, insects, and every other matter of creature and natural entity. We need a healthy biosphere with diversity and functioning relationships among that biospheres inhabitants.

Yes, you do need fungus and insects. Your survival as an organism on this planet is dependent on a working biosphere. Fungus and insects are vital to that biosphere. Therefor you are dependent on insects and fungus.
