Default How bad is weed? Honestly?

I know nothing about drugs. Sorry. Meta ffs don't lock this, it's serious. How bad is weed? I guess it can't be that bad if doctors are giving it to their patients, but... if so, why is it illegal?

Q: What happens if you smoke marijuana?

A: The way the drug affects each person depends on many factors, including:

* user's previous experience with the drug;;
* how strong the marijuana is (how much THC it has);
* what the user expects to happen;
* where the drug is used;
* how it is taken; and
* whether the user is drinking alcohol or using other drugs.

Some people feel nothing at all when they smoke marijuana. Others may feel relaxed or high. Sometimes marijuana makes users feel thirsty and very hungry—an effect called "the munchies."

Some users can suffer bad reactions from abusing marijuana. They may experience sudden feelings of anxiety and have paranoid thoughts. This is more likely to happen when a more potent variety of marijuana is used.

Q: What are the short-term effects of marijuana use?
A: The short-term effects of marijuana include:

* problems with memory and learning;
* distorted perception (sights, sounds, time, touch);
* trouble with thinking and problem solving;
* loss of motor coordination; and
* increased heart rate.

Effects can be unpredictable, especially when other drugs are mixed with marijuana.
Q: Does marijuana affect school, sports, or other activities?

A: It can. Marijuana affects memory, judgment, and perception . The drug can make you mess up in school, in sports or clubs, or with your friends. If you’re high on marijuana, you are more likely to make mistakes that could embarrass or even hurt you. If you use marijuana a lot, you could start to lose interest in how you look and how you’re getting along at school or work.

Athletes could find their performance is off; timing, movements, and coordination are all affected by THC. Also, since marijuana can affect judgment and decision making, its use can lead to risky sexual behavior, resulting in exposure to sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Q: What are the long-term effects of marijuana use?

A: Findings so far show that regular use of marijuana or THC may play a role in some kinds of cancer and in problems with the respiratory and immune systems.

* Cancer
It’s hard to know for sure whether marijuana use alone causes cancer, because many people who smoke marijuana also smoke cigarettes and use other drugs. But it is known that marijuana smoke contains some of the same, and sometimes even more, of the cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. Studies show that someone who smokes five joints per day may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day.

* Lungs and airways
People who smoke marijuana often develop the same kinds of breathing problems that cigarette smokers have: coughing and wheezing. They tend to have more chest colds than nonusers. They are also at greater risk of getting lung infections like pneumonia.

* Immune system
Our immune system protects the body from many agents that cause disease. It is not certain whether marijuana damages the immune system of people, but both animal and human studies have shown that marijuana impairs the ability of T-cells in the lungs' immune system to fight off some infections.

Q: Does marijuana lead to the use of other drugs?

A: Long-term studies of high school students and their patterns of drug use show that very few young people use other illegal drugs without first trying marijuana. For example, the risk of using cocaine is much greater for those who have tried marijuana than for those who have never tried it. Using marijuana puts children and teens in contact with people who are users and sellers of other drugs. So there is more of a risk that a marijuana user will be exposed to and urged to try more drugs.

To better determine this risk, scientists are examining the possibility that long-term marijuana use may create changes in the brain that make a person more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs, such as alcohol or cocaine. Although many young people who use marijuana do not go onto use other drugs, further research is needed to determine who will be at greatest risk.
Q: How can you tell if someone has been using marijuana?

A: If someone is high on marijuana, he or she might

* seem dizzy and have trouble walking;
* seem silly and giggly for no reason;
* have very red, bloodshot eyes; and
* have a hard time remembering things that just happened.

When the early effects fade, over a few hours, the user can become very sleepy.

Q: How does marijuana affect driving?

A: Marijuana affects many skills required for safe driving: alertness, concentration, coordination, and reaction time. Marijuana use can make it difficult to judge distances and react to signals and sounds on the road.

Marijuana may play a role in car accidents. In one study conducted in Memphis, TN, researchers found that, of 150 reckless drivers who were tested for drugs at the arrest scene, 33 percent tested positive for marijuana, and 12 percent tested positive for both marijuana and cocaine. Data have also shown that while smoking marijuana, people show the same lack of coordination on standard "drunk driver" tests as do people who have had too much to drink.

Q: What does marijuana do to the brain?

A: Some studies show that when people have smoked large amounts of marijuana for years, the drug takes its toll on mental functions. Heavy or daily use of marijuana affects the parts of the brain that control memory, attention, and learning. A working short-term memory is needed to learn and perform tasks that call for more than one or two steps.

Smoking marijuana causes some changes in the brain that are like those caused by cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Scientists are still learning about the many ways that marijuana can affect the brain.

Q: Can people become addicted to marijuana?

A: Yes. Long-term marijuana use leads to addiction in some people. That is, they cannot control their urges to seek out and use marijuana, even though it negatively affects their family relationships, school performance, and recreational activities. According to one study, marijuana use by teenagers who have prior antisocial problems can quickly lead to addiction. In addition, some frequent, heavy marijuana users develop “tolerance” to its effects. This means they need larger and larger amounts of marijuana to get the same desired effects as they used to get from smaller amounts.

Q: What if a person wants to quit using the drug?

A: In 2004, over 298,000 people entering drug treatment programs reported marijuana as their primary drug of abuse. However, up until a few years ago, it was hard to find treatment programs specifically for marijuana users.

Now researchers are testing different ways to help marijuana users abstain from drug use. There are currently no medications for treating marijuana addiction. Treatment programs focus on counseling and group support systems. There are also a number of programs designed especially to help teenagers who are abusers. Family doctors can be a good source for information and help when dealing with marijuana problems.

TL;DR: Marijuana use causes aids.

NO! Among adolescents, even occasional marijuana use may cause psychological damage. During intoxication, marijuana users become irrational and often behave erratically.

Some marijuana users experience psychological distress following marijuana ingestion, which may include feelings of panic, anxiety, and paranoia. Such experiences can be frightening, but the effects are temporary. With very large doses, marijuana can cause temporary toxic psychosis.

Marijuana is Highly Addictive. Long term marijuana users experience physical dependence and withdrawal, and often need professional drug treatment to break their marijuana habits.

The simple truth is this; Marijuana use is bad, both for your health and mental well-being. While you writing your exam is most certainly an exception to the rule, in general even using marijuana once can lead to phsychological problems down the road due to what are commonly known as "flashbacks", in which users experience a return to the original feeling of being "high", sometimes months or years after the fact.

there are FAR less chemicals in pot than in cigarettes, there are roughly 400 different chemical compounds in pot( occurring naturally)

In cigarettes there are about 600 different ADDITIVES alone, and these when given energy (heat) can turn into about 4000 different compounds that will fuck your day.

Wow, I really hope most of you are joking, or the OP is a troll or something.

Remember this: There is no such thing as a safe drug. No drug is 100% safe for you. Which means every drug could be considered "bad" in some way. Yes, I said every drug.

If you read about the health effects of popular recreational substances, you'll find that weed is one of the safer ones. I'm not saying it's the safest, I'm saying when compared against other popular drugs, it's safer than those drugs. The safest option is to not do drugs at all.

You are responsible for every drug you put into your body, and whatever damage results. You must form your own opinion for each substance. Only you can decide whether a drug is "bad" or not. How do you do this? You research. Go research weed, look at all the data, analyze it yourself, and then draw your own conclusion. Then you'll know how bad weed is, and you can base your decision to use it or not on that knowledge.

I'm too biased to try and sit here and tell you whether you should put weed in your body or not. Accept your responsibility.

I think you're confusing LSD with Marijuana.
Also, sources?

Unless we have knowledge of said chemicals, we have no right to assume that they are harmful.
Further more, even though it occurs naturally, it would also be unwise to assume what is "Natural" is presumably safe. Now, I do agree that it is very safe considering illicit substances, but it should be known that cocaine occurs naturally, as does meth, since they are both chemical reactions, even if fixed by human hands.
Also, it is true that there is plenty of "tar" in marijuana, but there is tar in anything you smoke. BUT, the truth has been distorted often times. Anti-Marijuana ads will tell you that there are "4 times the cancer-causing substances in one joint than in one cigarrette." Let's not bother with the fact that anti-drug campaigns are using "Facts" from early and primitive tests from the 70's that have been disproven, but focus on the fact that according to a study in the recent 3-4 years by the DEA, carcinogens have never been linked to causing cancer, no substantial evidence has ever been given.

Honestly people who hate marijuana are just pathetic fags who don't know anything except for what there parents and a bible tells them its not bad for you its worth doing

The parents are often simple-minded sheep who prefer to believe anything the media hands them without question, so I feel a little remorse for those, they are only looking out for what's best, even when they don't know the truth.
In the Hebrew translations of the Christian/Jewish bible, it is stated that "Into the lord's house of worship will be brought murr, frankincents and cannibosm." Cannibosm would be pronounced as if the m were silent, thereby bringing Cannabis.
So, the Bible never states against Marijuana, in fact, it represents it's use, on many occasions. Genesis 1:29 states "Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;" which means all plants are for usage, and denying their use (And banning it) would be considered blasphemy to many religious extremists. That does not mean you are meant to gobble down datura seeds and smoke a metric fuckton of salvia, but everything has it's uses, and all in moderation.
As far as legality goes, media is thine enemy.
Look into it for yourself, everybody, my wrists are going numb, I've been trying to get up my post count so that irritating cunt hacktheworld will quit pestering me.

Old, but this needs to be told:
The use of marijuana by those who are predisposed to a mental condition within their immediate family (such as another family member having psychosis/schizophrenia) most likely will develop the condition themselves following the intake of Cannabis.
It happened to my best friend, who's uncle is psychotic- it occured after only a few weeks of ingestion of said substance, and his use consisted of only the odd joint or two every weekend or so.
Be warned.
Also, a friend's mother is a child psychiatrist. On inquiring, she stated that a large number of patients she sees on the ward these days went psychotic after occasional cannabis use. My guess is that they were probably predisposed to the illness too. I was sure to ask if there were any other drugs involved, and if the symptoms' occurence within these kids could've been due to any other possible factors. She said that most of the time there were no drugs involved, as cannabis was so widely used and popular within my town- and that the cannabis was most probably the reason for the symptoms developing. She also remarked on the potency of the Cannabis around these days- stating this is also a possible reason for the mental illness of so many of her patients.
We get alot of skunk around here, to be perfectly honest.
Naysayers, make what you will from this information. I'm just sharing my knowledge on the subject.

That's funny because I have a friend who is somewhat "mentally abnormal" and he loves smoking blunts with me. He used to always smoke straight White Owl and Philly blunts until he found out I took out the tobacco and rolled weed into it. I got him to try it one night and he loved it.

I mean this guy is weird but ever since he started burning with me he's more normal and sane. Don't get me wrong he's mad crazy and annoying while we're high but it seems as though after a few months of use he's a lot more normal sober. He's just chilled out and actually acts somewhat sane now around people.

He has fetal alcohol syndrome. After seeing what it does to someone's mind first hand, I will straight punch a bitch who drinks while pregnant. It's so irresponsible. He was adopted so it's not like I could ever find his stupid druggie mother.

It isn't a family history of mental illness, though- although i'm obviously not doubting in any way the severity of the situation.
Thats truly evil, to bring a child into the world with that disadvantage.
Still on the positive side- if it'd never happened, you'd never have been friends with him. And you sound like you're close.

The simple truth is this; Marijuana use is bad, both for your health and mental well-being. While you writing your exam is most certainly an exception to the rule, in general even using marijuana once can lead to phsychological problems down the road due to what are commonly known as "flashbacks", in which users experience a return to the original feeling of being "high", sometimes months or years after the fact.

flashbacks?!?!?! are you kidding me?? you must be confused and thinking of lsd...

i have smoked for 30 yrs, i dont smoke anything else nor do i do any other kinds of drugs or even drink. i am also healthy as a horse! no lung problems no nothing....i have never ever had a "flashback"!

worst thing smoking ever did to me was causing me to wake up with the occ mound of little debbie wrappers next to the bed.....

while its not for children it is not the demon its made out to be. the single biggest reason its even outlawed is due to dupont corp. they dont want a single weed killig thier company....

Lol. High-five Azure! Successful troll is successful.

For the younglings who want some literature, though, here is some sauce.

1. http://www.abovetheignorance.org
2. http://www.benefitsofmarijuana.com/index.php
3. http://www.marijuana-uses.com/index.html
4. http://www.google.com/search?q=marijuana+neurogenesis

#2 is not exactly scientific, but she's really nice and will respond to any questions you have by e-mail.

Sadly, I actually lost most of my sauce due to computer switch but here's a little, at least.

Yeah, I feel someone like that needs a friend he could always turn to. We don't see eachother very often but he's still cool to chill with. I mean he's not completely insane. He plays golf with pro-football players from our hometown team and wins those huge person-sized checks at golf tournaments (sometimes worth a few grand) so he's got a good future. He's a polite guy and a natural at golf but if you spend more than 5 minutes with him you'll see there's something obviously wrong with him. Good thing is he understands that and tries to work around it but sometimes he can get carried away.

He's come a long way from the time I first met him. He used to be completely insane.

You want me to tell you what the DARE programs should be telling you?

Weed isn't bad for you at all really. Sure it impairs your memory and its good for your lungs, but the only real problem with weed is addiction. *Braces for flames*

Ya ya ya ya ya, weed isn't addictive, says everyone. And it isn't in the same way other drugs are. Weed is addictive BECAUSE it is not very addictive. Paradoxical eh. Since weed is so safe and relaxed and casual and not physically addicting it becomes extremely habit forming.

Of course you could quit if you wanted to, but then again so could any other addict. The problem is that they don't want to stop.

When you start smoking weed everyday the positive effects decrease and the negative effects increase.

Moderation is the key. But since weed is so safe people tend to get mentality addicted to it.

Just don't start blazzing everyday and you will be fine.

Thats what they should tell you in dare. Theres nothing wrong with the occasional toke, but don't become a burnout stoner retard. Use weed on special occasions. Don't make it part of your everyday routine.

I agree and disagree.

It is psychologically addictive if you burn a lot. You'll just crave that high again when you come down and want to smoke again.

However it's really, really, really easy to break the "addiction". You just...stop. I go on 3 or 4 month breaks every so often from my usual daily use. I find it hard to fight that craving for the first 3 days but after that I just don't want it anymore. As soon as I smoke it again I go, "oh yeah, this is why I smoke so often" and then have to re-break the cycle.

Ya feel? It's not hard to stop cold turkey if you possess any sort of self-control.

I'm exactly like that, however I know several.... many... people who can't kick the daily habit. There just isn't enough cons to motivate them to do it. Thats part of the problem with weed. If you're doing coke everyday, you know you are causing serious damage and that might give you incentive to quit, but with weed its so not harmful that people can smoke it daily for their entire lives. I know a few older people (in their 40s) who are hardcore daily smokers. I really really doubt they will ever stop.
