I think there's great potential in human beings to be in a different state of consciousness, collectively. A wiser and more connected state of being. Of course, it doesn't happen spontaneously. All I know is me as well as others on this board have had many experiences that don't fit into something anyone can explain, and in a way kind of starts to alienate you from most people, because you just can't be like you used to be once something really mind shattering happens to you.
I'm not saying I believe something will happen in 2012 specifically, but I will say this: There is unconscious, and completely conscious. Asleep, and completely awake. When people have developed the point of their highest awareness, the point to be completely awake and aware, without hindrances in their mind or body, they too will see there is much great potential in people to be more than they know, and that the real suffering of the human race is unconsciousness and being driven around purely by necessity and habits (work, school, thoughts, repeated emotions with repeated results). There will never be any amount of money or doctrine or status in society that will "fix" us because those aren't really ways of evolving, just ways of keeping the body alive, which isn't the highest possibility, to have sex and money and everything taken care of. The real ignorance of the human race is that most of us believe that's it, because it's the highest we've experienced. I myself truly feel deep down we all have much more to learn and life isn't meant to be this painful burden that so many of us accept it as.
I don't think the question is will "we" get there, but will the individual themselves decide to get there, and how will they, and how will they show others...
That's how I feel on any subject of evolution/human growth. It's all about how conscious you are. The body has all it needs, the society provides everything you can imagine, but where is the deepest source of unhappiness? What really hinders our growth and freedom?

I remember being made fun of because I mentioned that there was an asteroid that came close to earth and nearly hit by some of my ex-peers (I forget the name but it was a few months back) yet they all acceped this shit without question.

They label days as Kin. 20 Kin is called a Winal. 18 Winal (360 days) is a Tun. 20 Tun (roughly 20 years) is a K'atun. 20 K'atun (roughly 400 years) is a B'ak'tun. The way these would be written out is like this: (b'ak'tun number).(k'atun number).(tun number).(winal number).(kin number). At the end of the 13th b'ak'tun (or 12.19.19.17.19), you reach the end of a cycle. The movement from that to 0.0.0.0.0 is what will happen on December 12. However, this misses just how important the number 13 is on the Long Count calender (an importance derived from their previous use of a lunar calender). The real length of a Long Count calender? 0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0, or 13 digits. Yes, when those last five roll over, it is a cycle, but the calender is more concerned about the large cycle. By the way, each of those digits past the fifth goes up to 13. So, theoretically, this renders the calender maxing out at 12.12.12.12.12.12.12.12.12.12.19.19.17.19. I believe 2012 will roll over that sixth digit to a 5 or 6. The rest are still zeros. They only used those last five because of practicality, similar to how we don't say it's the year 00000000000002008.
My girlfriend studied cultural anthropology for three years at a private university with a focus in Central American cultures. My shit is so legit I might have to quit a little bit to get it back down to manageable, nonquitting levels.

Technology has always been the hallmark of man. Even the Mayan wouldn't have been able to calculate the "cycles" without technology. It's ironic that you use the most technologically advanced medium to try to convince people that our way of life is wrong and bad. Think about for a moment. The computer you are using right now was designed, manufactured and sold. Hundreds of people were necessary for building, marketing and distributing your computer. We all need technology.
And as for time and the clock as being an "evil plague upon humanity". Imagine a world where people are always late and we have no fucking idea how to organise different task because we have no clue what time it is. The clock, like all inventions, was created out of necessity and desire.
I would rather be inside a warm house, sitting on a sofa, and then outside living like a savage but supposedly being "one with nature". It's about - 5 Fahrenheit outside right now with about 2 feet of snow. I would rather live up to 80 or 90 with the help of technology instead of dying at 25-35 because I am "one with nature". Nature started the war with humanity and now it wants out because it's loosing? The only thing we really need to learn is better stewardship concerning our natural resources while developing better sustainable practices. Not metaphysical crap that means nothing, does nothing and is so vague that is can be interpreted any way we want.
If you want to change things be proactive and get out there. The different "densities" won't do shit to help your life. As Voltaire said "the only way to be truly happy is to work without thinking" and he was absolutely right. The guy how wrote that article really had too much time on his hands...
The only thing that will happen on 2012 is that all those doomsayers and/or false prophets will be wrong...
