That does seem like alot of psuedo terminal device files, can you actually state what distribution of Linux you are running and what kernel?
Code:
uname -a
Do not delete them, besides that's not the right way to fix this problem. To turn DMA on for your DVD drive, first check the BIOS to make sure it is operating at it's maximum mode. Second, use:
Code:
hdparm
To switch the DMA on or off or it's UDMA mode.

All in all though, before we make too many assumptions about what is happenning here, we need your distribution version and kernel version.

Run:
Code:
hdparm -I -i /dev/sr0
That will print a list of information about the drive, also like I said about assumptions, sr0 is a 2.6.25 thing give or take, post your kernel version and distribution's release version.

Run:
Code:
dmesg > /tmp/dmesg.txt
Then post the output of that file here.. 2.6.24 should be using udev, not devfs, and what it looks like is devfs. It's possible Ubuntu still uses devfs by default in the generic kernel releases, but I cannot know for sure unless I check. Post the results.

Oh my god, you're either an idiot or extremely ill informed. NEVER delete anything in /dev/. EVER. Never delete anything outside of $HOME, unless you are ABSOLUTELY FUCKING CERTAIN you are not screwing anything up.

Try
Code:
man hier
for some information on the UNIX filesystem hierarchy.

Next time you post large file output, just use
Quote:
Code:

tags also, it shrinks the text slightly and will not cost three posts.

I see nothing in there showing a reason for the excessive creation of pty device files. What I suggest is, as a test.. since you are using udev and not devfs as far as the kernel is concerned.. run as root:
Code:
rm -rf /dev/* ; reboot
Now, what Pr0 said is right, never delete device files in /dev/ unless you have a good reason, in this case if your kernel really is using udev, it will recreate every device file required for anything you have or are running as a service, like secure shell for example.

If you feel like you should backup your /dev/ directory, by all means do so.. but in this case you should have only what you need when you reboot back into the system. Post the output of:
Code:
ls /dev/
after you reboot, see what it looks like there..
Ubuntu for some reason may also have it set up in udev rules to create all those devices, why.. I'm not really sure, when on-demand device file creation has been around for a long time now. If we see there is no change after removing every file in /dev/ and rebooting, we can assume there are some funky udev rules set up and can find them using a little scripting from the shell.

Thanks for helping me out Zeusy. :P
Don't worry about /dev being cluttered.

You seem to have four *cdrom*. cdrom and cdrom1, cdrw and dvd.
Are you sure you are trying mounting the right one?

Also, is there some weird permission/s on the files?
There doesn't seem to be any hd* or sd*, but I'm not quite familiar with the 2.6.x.

An ls -all on dev will give us which cdrom points to which drive.
(cdrom and cdrom1 [...] are simply symlinks to the *real* devices).

If for some reason no hd* or sd* shows up, try using single-user mode.

Had to delete some of the files names with multiple numbers, but tryied to keep all the unique ones. (to fit in post)

I tried telinit 1, then came up with a screen, i didn't know what to do then, so i resumed, but now both my 2 hard drives have now dismounted... (Though i haven't restarted yet to find out if it is perminant)

Ah, just reboot, you'll be taken back to the normal run level.
Read /etc/inittab .

Use /dev/dvd for the dvd drive, and cdrwl for the cd-only drive.
Therefore the command is `mount -t iso9660 drive /mount/point`.
If it doesn't work it will most likely print some error, you know what to do.

If you're having trouble with DMA on your drives, use hdparm to switch it, to make this permanent, putting it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local will change the drive parameters everytime the machine boots. First chek your drives with hdparm -Ii though to make sure it isn't already set.

It may have been normal with devfs, that's fucking archaic, we use udev now, which create devices on demand. Come on guys, upgrade your kernels to something in the 1980's range at least. I know you guys are running Ubuntu and Gentoo with broken ass flags.

Mine definitely does not look like that:

Run this:
Code:
cat /etc/udev/rules.d/* | grep pty
I really can't say what's up with your machine bro, it is probably normal for distributions still trying to properly implement udev.

With respect to DMA on the CD/DVD ROM drives, it may be related to the ATA driver that is used.

In the past (and still in some linux distros), PATA disk drives got to be /dev/hd* while SATA & SCSI devices were /dev/sd*. Starting in Linux 2.6.2something, it became possible to use a new ATA driver that made both PATA & SATA devices show up as /dev/sd* (or /dev/scd*). Ubuntu started loading this driver by default some time after v. 6.06.

In any case, I've noticed problems with this driver, PATA devices, and hdparm before.

To fix this, you can find out the module name and add it to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and then hope that your computer can find and load the correct drive for your particular ide chipset at boot time. You could also compile your own kernel and make sure that you don't compile in that driver. Depending on if your root drive is SATA or PATA, you may need to edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst to make sure that you pass the correct name of your root drive to the kernel at boot time.

If you do find that you need to have to set hdparm parameters and they don't get saved over reboots, you can put the command in your rc.local. You should also have a file called /etc/hdparm.conf where you can set the proper options. Ubuntu should be set-up to execute hdparm when you're going into runlevel 1 or 2 and draw the config options from that file. It's a slightly more elegant way to handle things.

As far as your /dev/ directory goes, I wouldn't worry about it. It's not actually taking up any space on your drive.

Im going to reinstall another linux distro... I think i have done too much previously which could have damaged something. So a fresh install will allow me to have another attempt.

Try Fedora 10. It's really nice, and regardless if you like GUI shit or not, Fedora provides the best of both worlds, nice GUI shit and of course if you're running without X, you still have a base Linux system.

If not Fedora, try Slackware.
