I don't know if any pot smoker out there have tried this. Just a few minutes ago, I was leisurely smoking a midnight bowl, about as slow as humanly possible. Anyway I realized you can get smoe pretty decent vaporization hits if you just ever so lightly hit the pipe, as to draw the heat of the flame just barely in the direction of the bowl.

There's definitely a sweet spot to it and it might depend largely on your piece. Right now Im using a small steam roller. Has anyone thought of this before/found it out?

You're I was kind of vague. Yeah, I am using a regular pipe, and a regular lighter. If you draw just the ambient heat from the flame into the bowl, you can get the weed to get pretty damn hot without being burned by direct flame.

I fisrt was just trying it on a half burnt little nug. i just ripped up a new fresh nug, and loaded it so it was real loose, and high up. It works good to hold the pipe sideways, then hold the light out about two or so centimeters and not such real hard, you can get the hang of it. But I gotta say, that green hit if done properly easily rivals the hits I've had from a volcano.

Basically it's just a way to get a few vaporizer hits with out buying an expensive device, or taking the time to construct a crude one.

And right now the benefit in that for me is that I just dont feel like inhaling smoke, also I definitely feel like it gets more compounds flowing from the weed. I get a noticeable head change.

The fact that some THC is damaged during burning makes this seem like quite a good idea if you're bored. I would try vaporizing as much as possible and then smoking it as normal to get what's left. It's a good plan because no matter what happens, in the end you get high.

I was thinking about something like this when I showed my friend a freebase pipe for the first time. He assumed it was for weed and we had a little banter back and forth about how it would be feasible but it would be better suited to other options.

The only thing that could go wrong is you pack your bowl too tight and that's easily fixed.

I think it's more simple than it sounds. You hold the flame over the bowl. You suck in gently. You don't want the flame to touch the weed, you just want the heat to "cook it"

As for sitting there for however long it takes trying to "vaporize" your weed without burning it, thats just stupid. You're not getting any higher from doing it. Theres no health benefits. If you don't mind sitting there staring cross eyed at your pipe for hours, sure go ahead.

On the other hand, you now know a good trick for lighting your pipe. Instead of holding the lighter over the bowl and torching it like most people seem to do (which does waste weed) I prefer to do as you described only a bit closer, just barely lighting the bowl and just keep the bowl cherried from then on, burning slowly and evenly for much much longer than if you're torching it every five seconds. Thats how you smoke a bowl.

You're right it should be obvious! I just had never thought of it before in years of smoking. call me stupid slow whatever, stoned. That sounds like it would have to take a lot of hits to get high off of. I wouldn't know though, I need to wait for Friday to get another sack so I can try it, but what I usually do is just light a little part of the bowl at the top and just use the choke hole to keep it on. I found it doesn't waste as much weed, but I'll give your little "trick" a try once I get my sack then post and see if it works well for me.

Note: This "technique" I "discovered" isn't really that useful, it wont save your weed at all, please don't consider it a proposed revolutionary idea. It's just for someone who wants to experience a vape hit without all the BS. I also advise toasting the bowl after you try this because if you don't you're wasting it.
