External Hard Drive Major Annoyance
Hey.
I've had this little problem for a while now, I'll link to another thread on another site to see if you can help out.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=981050
All the info is there but I'll post it here for all you lazy bastards.
It's a Freecom 400GB external USB hard drive.
It has worked on Ubuntu before (albeit a bit flaky) which is what is the most annoying thing to me. lsusb doesn't list it as being connect, fdisk -l doesn't show anything up about the drive.
It's there in when I boot into windows, but not in Ubuntu. I've tried the "safely remove hardware" within windows, clean shutdown and still no External hard drive. Would really appreciate any tools or tips you can pass along. It's the main reason I'm still having to go back to Windows.
Basically lsusb doesn't list it, dmesg shows nothing I can tell is a part of the hard drive. sudo fdisk -l shows NOTHING about the drive.
Every now and again it'll pop back up and I'll have a great time. Until I reboot, it's gone again. So please if anyone knows anything please help.

Re: External Hard Drive Major Annoyance
Okay, see that last post in that thread? That's damn wrong.
There is always a reason. Nothing on a computer happens for "no reason".
It's extremely unlikely that adding anything in some source code header file changed anything, and I wouldn't do that in the future. Do this:
- Remove the drive safely in windows and turn it off.
- Boot into Ubuntu and open up System>Administration>System log
- Turn on the drive and read the new log entries. Copy and paste them here and to ubuntuforums.
Assuming the drive is ntfs, it's probable that what's happening is that it's marked as dirty, and as such you'd have to manually mount it in Ubuntu. Note also that I doubt fdisk would list the drive, as it's an external.
Get back to us with the logs. They will either contain messages pertinent to your success, or contain errors that we can then debug.

Re: External Hard Drive Major Annoyance
Regardless of what dmesg says, not writing off what Pr0 is saying, but if ohci-hcd.ko,uhci-hcd.ko,ehci-hcd.ko and usb-storage.ko are not loaded or are not being loaded automatically when you plug in the device, your shit will never work. If we ever get the data that Pr0 requested, we can further diagnose the problem with the system.
I'm going to guess already that:
#1 - HAL daemon is not running polling for devices
#2 - The partition on the device is of one that Linux cannot read, and the poster is assuming the device in full doesn't work when plugged in.. I can only assume.

fdisk will list any drive, whether it has partitions or not.. and regardless if they are mounted, not CD/DVD drives.. but you get the idea.
In this case if he plugs the device in, fdisk isn't showing anything either because of permissions, say he is running fdisk as UID 500 for example, and udev created the device rwx------ for user root, he wouldn't see anything from fdisk, or the device needs to be plugged into the wall, I've seen many different configurations for external devices and sometimes it was a simple modification of udev rules that was neccessary for using the device as anyone but root.

Right about that. Thanks.
