Cigarette’s and insomnia
I am not talking about smoking as a cause but rather a cure. While it is probably a bad and expensive idea to start smoking at all, the smoker's I know do say that it does help put them asleep. I have had insomnia for at least two years and while booze and certain drugs do work in a pinch, I am looking for an easier way. I am just trying to weigh up the risk/benefit, which is namely go through some days in fatigued, scatterbrained trance or to open myself up to the hassle of smoking.

Re: Cigarette’s and insomnia
Smokers only can say that it helps them sleep because their body is addicted to the nicotine. Without it, their body is antsy and rather awake, wondering where it will get its next dose of nic. So unless you're already a smoker, it's won't work - as ilovechronic said, it's a stimulant.

This, exactly. If you're a non-smoker and you smoke a cigarette, it's much more likely to keep you awake. The primary "calming" effects people describe from nicotine is achieved by their body and brain receiving it's fix of the drug, not by the psychopharmacological action of nicotine itself.

The calm, painkilling effect actually is from the psychopharmacological effects, but is only acquired at higher doses. At higher doses nicotine causes release of serotonin (calming effect)) and beta-endorphin (painkilling effect).

Re: Cigarette’s and insomnia
I'd recommend some pot or Valerian instead of tobacco. See how that works for you, better than getting hooked on smoking and much more effective.

Re: Cigarette’s and insomnia
doxylamine succinate and promethazine work well for me when i don't have xan bars/opiates
i quit drinking too but used to use it to sleep, made me fat so that was no longer an option. moved to gbl got addicted, kicked that now my insomnia is worse than ever and has been for a year or so
doxylamine succinate pills will still put me down though if i take enough (it's the shit in nyquil, but that has APAP in it too so get the pills)
works like a charm but tolerance builds quick, and you wake up kind of groggy. i'd switch up between ambien/doxy to prevent tolerance issues (if ambien works for you, it does for me but i have to take 40mgs or so). also, with ambien you (or at least i) don't wake up groggy at all but refreshed. the only thing is they don't knock you out like other things, they just help you get to sleep should you really try, quite effectively though, even though it may sound iffy.
and cigarettes are a horrible idea

Doxylamine succinate works well, but the day after you kind of feel like a zombie. If you have school it can be difficult. Also I woke up with a REALLY dry mouth once. Anyway, cigarettes work for me but I wouldn't recommend them. I dunno, walking at night with a cigarette is very calming just before you sleep, I do it most nights. Its up to you though.

Try melatonin, valerian root extract, or GABA. Those are all OTC and always have worked for me.

Re: Cigarette’s and insomnia
why don't you try being more active during the day, eating right, and do very little active stuff right before bed instead of using a substance you could become dependent on. even if the substance is harmless you could develop a dependence.

Re: Cigarette’s and insomnia
^ For the record, I am rather active most day's and aside from the insomnia I am in good physical health, it's been a constant thing since I was 15. But yeah, I guess it isn't a great idea to get dependant on something like smoking. Valarian is also no good for me.

Yea, dopamine is released too amongst other neurotransmitters, from stimulation of cholinergic system.
