Phenobarbital Question
If a person were to be taking 10mg of Alpralozam, stopped taking Alpralozam and acquired Phenobarbital 64.8mg tablets. How many should that person take in order to get an effective "high"?

Re: Phenobarbital Question
Ouch, that's a tough one man. 10 mg of Xanax is going to be tough to kick.
Phenobarbital is a weak barbiturate and 64.8 mg is a low dose. It's been awhile since I've taken Phenobarbital so I'm not 100% positive, but you should take around 300mg and see how you feel.
Seriously though, you should taper off the Alprazolam instead of jumping to Phenobarbital so quick (Phenobarbital is more helpful after the worst of the withdrawals are over). If that's not an option, you should seriously see a doctor, Benzo withdrawal, especially at that high a dose is brutal and can even be fatal.
The best advice I can give you is to consult a professional.
Best of luck man.

I've been off of Benzos for three days now. I've been taking 10mg/day for about three months. I went to see a specialist this morning so I could kick this goddamned habit. He perscribed me four of the Phenobarbital and told me to come see him again tomorrow. He was suprised I hadn't already had a seizure.

Also, how does this medication respond when I drink with it. My doctor told me I would get "drunk"... well, that's what usually happens when you drink.

Re: Phenobarbital Question
Shit, I'd be surprised to. Luckily you only were on 10 mg of Xanax for 3 months. How the hell did you get to that high of a dose if you don't mind me asking? Was this for legitimate anxiety issues or just recreational. I'm not judging you, please don't think that, I was just asking because I'd like to know what incompetent psychiatrist would put a patient on such a high dosage of Xanax and then pull the plug.
Still, 4 64.8mg Phenobarbital doesn't seem like it would cut it.
I'm not an expert, but I assumed that the most common withdrawal/taper method was the valium method, and then followed by the Phenobarbital.
Don't worry though man, you'll get better, just hang in there. I know it's tough; I've withdrawled off both benzos and opiates many times. You'll feel like hell, but at least you have a doctor monitoring your progress. Hope you have a speedy recovery man.

My doctor, not a psychiatrist, initially started me out with .5mg every 8 hours about a year ago. A few months after that it went up to 1mg every 6 hours. In the last three months, it was kicked up to five 2mg pills/ day. I was using it for major anxiety and inability to sleep, I was taking 4mg after I got off of work and an additional 6mg before I went to bed. Worked pretty well until he dropped my dosage to 4mg/day without telling me and I had to get more from another doctor, insurance ratted me out to my regular doctor and he said he wouldn't perscribe me anymore.
I always thought the method for getting a patient to quit Benzos was to transfer it over to an equivalent amount of Valium and slowly lower the dose, as well. Apparently, this guy thinks otherwise. Also, he's making me see him two days in a row... sounds like he's trying to milk my insurance company.
I've taken the four, one every four hours, as directed by him and I'm still not feeling any better. Don't suppose I'll be getting any sleep tonight, either.
Thank you for your support.

Damn dude, I feel for you.
I can't imagine how the doc would even think that the phenobarb would do anything for you...especially at that dosage, and fresh from all that alp. everyday...
my only suggestion is if you had some, or you could go to the store and get some. Valerian Root. It's acts on GABA same as benzo's. When im out of k-pins I take like 10-15 grams Valerian and get nice relief from withdrawls, well as nice as i could hope for not actually taking benzos. It's not potent, by any means and will be nothing like pharms...but it's worth a shot. It will help you sleep anyway, i take it along with melatonin for insomnia, and like i said when im out of clonazapem.

Re: Phenobarbital Question
Oh, so you're in Mexico? No wonder you've had the great luck of getting two doctors in a row who are simply stupid as all fuck.
Stupid Fuck #1: Let's put someone on 10 mg Xanax/day on their third month of benzo therapy! And 6 mg for sleep? Of a short-acting benzo? Guy must be a victim of fetal alcohol syndrome.
Stupid Fuck #2: Okay, so we're going to get this guy off of a 10 mg Xanax regimen by giving him 260 mg of phenobarbital. Yeah, right. And let's give the guy kicking a gram-a-day dope habit 5 mg of methadone twice a day, while we're at it.
Oh, and you said you're taking ONE phenobarbital every four hours? It'd probably take triple that amount to safely bring someone down off 10 mg of Xanax. Besides, alprazolam regimens that high should almost always be tapered to a manageable level using physician-controlled doses of alprazolam itself before switching over to phenobarbital.
You should also be doing this in-patient, by the way. But what the fuck do I know, right?

I totally agree with POC here, not only are you doctors fucking morons but there endangering your life. Being a long time benzo addict I'll try to help out as best I can.
The safest way to 'detox' off a high regimen like that is to taper your doses. You should not just be switching from a high dose benzo, especially a very short acting one like xanax and replacing it with a miniscual dose of of ANY barbituate. Your doctor should be limiting your doses and gradually drop you from 10mgs a day, to 8mgs and so on and so forth. From what I've read(dont quote me on this), especially on xanax, 4mg and below is a safe dose to start discontinuation and switch to something like a high dose of phenobarbital, which would stop any chance of a seizure and help with the irritibility. And trust me, I've tried to quit benzos cold turkey after many long years on them, and all I can say is that a seizure is NOT the way to go. This is something that could take your life man, dont leave to to a couple braindead docs who obvisouly have no idea what they are doing, or what they got you into.
My best advice to you man is to find a COMPETENT, knowledgable doctor who understands your condition and proceed from there. But POC has a good point as you should be in inpatient facility, it gives you your best chance at kicking the habit and people in there actually know what they are doing; that initially is what the ER doctors wanted me to go into but I never went, just went back home and continued on my way. Talk about a missed opportunity eh?
