Do not buy gta iv for pc
Ok. I got GTA 4 for PC, spent God knows how long installing it (fell asleep), clicked a million "I agree" buttons and try to launch it - but no.
This piece of shit Rockstar Games Social Club has a fatal error.
I looked around on GTA Forums and they said to try installing .NET 3.5. I did that, and it still doesn't work.
I rung up Tech Support and they said to screenshot it and send in a DxDiag, I have done that and am awaiting a reply.
http://i33.tinypic.com/2hhf4g8.jpg
I've made ISO's and written down the CD key so if it isn't fixed soon I'll be returning it and possibly re-installing at a later date.
Although, after it installed, I rebooted, RGSC didn't fatal error, and it started to load.... got to the Rockstar logo, heard a little bit of music (about 1 second) - then crash. >
HOLY SHIT: I GOT IT TO WORK - AFTER DISCONNECTING MY COMPUTER FROM THE INTERNET! FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT!
It fucking runs like a piece of ass. Crysis on Maximum runs better than this shit on low.
Phenom 9500 @ 2.5ghz (o/clocked on stock air cooling)
4x 1gig Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066mhz
HD3870 @ 800mhz GPU/1206mhz Memory Clock
Apparently a shitload of other people are having performance issues too. Check out GTAForums: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showforum=240

I just played GTA 4 on the PC. All I've got to say is - don't buy this piece of shit. Probably the worst piece of shit Rockstar has ever put out. I'm playing it on my PC with an Intel QX9650, TWO nvidia 9800GTX in SLi, 4 gigs of ram, Windows XP SP3, and its putting out about 20fps on high settings. I thought it was a driver issue at first, but when reading up on various forums, ANY KIND OF FUCKING PC SETUP runs the game at max 20 fps. Good job Rockstar, nice port you made! And not to mention it took you over a year. It also looks alot shittier than the console version, rofl. Everythings edgy as fuck, the blur thing that you can't turn off is fucking horrible, and the view distance just fucks everything up. Not to mention when you turn your headlights on, the fps drops from already low to even lower. When car alarms go off, the fps goes 20-0-20-0-20-0 until the fucking alarm stops beeping.
You know what Rockstars excuse is? OH, YEH, WE MADE THE GAME FOR FUTURE PCZ GUYS, SORRY. BETTAR GET A TIME MACHINE!!1
And before some smartass goes "OH IT MIGHT BE YOUR PC" - NO, I've tried it on THREE different PC's, one of them with an ATI card.
Never buying a Rockstar game again. If I downloaded it, I wouldn't give a flying fuck if their game is a piece of dog shit, but since I paid 40€ for it, I care alot. They better release a patch soon or I'm gonna go postal on the pack of cunts.
"Discuss".

This game is a piece of shit. Do not buy it. You're better off buying a PS3 or 360 to play it if you really want to.

Probably your firewall blocking it from connecting to the net. And then when it doesn't detect any network connections, it skips it.

hmm, Skylines are not cool.
especially twin turbo skylines.
If your gonna spend money on a 'sports' car you can boast about, you need to spend more than $20k.
Hell, i'd be more impressed if it was a supercharged VL.
But anyway... your probably a Leb, so its understood, just not agreed on.
Stop hitting on my grandma!

Re: Do not buy gta iv for pc
Yeah, it's a terrible terrible port.
Runs half as good as Crysis and looks half as good too.
There's a huge thread on NeoGAF, people with really good PC's can barely play the game at 30 frames per second, and it looks pretty pathetic.
EDIT:
There's a guy on there who's got 2 GTX280's in SLi and a Q9550 and he drops into the 20's running at 1680x1050. Lulz.
Rockstar is maximum fail.

I counter you with this. A next gen GTA where all the mission are not the same and w/ the customization of GTA:SA. Rockstars new "serious" tone kinda sucked.

Bitch, the GTA franchise has been going to shit ever since GTA2 due to fratboys like yourself, what the fuck do you mean new serious tone? That's the only tone the game is meant to have, it's just that they do such a bad job of potraying the crime world realistically (and about everything else, as this game is a prime example of) that it is viewed as a humurous storyline.

Re: Do not buy gta iv for pc
Holy shit. I knew this game had high system requirements, but damn. I was hoping to get it for Christmas, but now I'm not so sure.
Not to mention I have a PC that is still nearly stock from when I built it in Nov. 2006.
My current system specs:
AMD Socket 939 Athlon X2 4200+ at 2.7 Ghz
2 nVidia 7600GT's in SLI (256 MB each)
2.5 GB of DDR 400 RAM
Windows XP Pro SP3
I'm planning on getting 2 9800GT's and 1 GB of real Patriot RAM to replace the 512 mb of pulled ram I added to the 2GB.
I can't upgrade my CPU since I have a Socket 939, the one I have is pretty much as good as I can do.
Not to mention I have a 1680 x 1050 monitor.
This sucks balls. I was hoping to be able to play this finally as I don't have a console. Also, I've pirated every GTA so far, so I wanted to pay my debts to Rockstar and actually buy GTA IV.
I guess that ain't happening... :(

If this game doesn't run properly, why does it have such good reviews?

Re: Do not buy gta iv for pc
Rockstar supposedly developed some bullshit copy protection that makes the game play like shit when you try to crack it.
Doesn't work cause I ran it on a crack just fine. Just took longer for people to crack it is all (and by long I mean less than a week). They spent 200,000$ on this protection. Epic self pwn.

Re: Do not buy gta iv for pc
Here's a review from a site that isn't afraid to tell it like it is:
http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/12/04/grand-theft-auto-iv-pc/1
Be warned though that Grand Theft Auto IV for the PC is a real performance hog and may be enough to cripple most systems. We ran the game first on a PC that packed 3 GB of DDR2 memory, a Core 2 Extreme X6800 overclocked to 2.99GHz and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 and we still struggled to get above even 16 frames a second on the highest settings the game would allow. Even scaling back to only use half the resources and have medium texture detail only edged out at around 20 fps.
Wondering if it might be a problem with the system we moved to an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 and an GeForce GTX 260 (216) with 4GB of DDR2 memory. The previous setup had been run Vista 32-bit while this new one ran Vista 64-bit. The results however were largely the same, if not worse. To get a playable and stable framerate we had to drop the graphics right down to Low while Harry scratched his head and wondered why a £1,000 gaming PC couldnt compete on the same ground as a £200 console. Hmm.
Truly pathetic.

Some say review copies weren't the same as the final product, others say they didn't review it at all and just reworded their Xbox reviews

Re: Do not buy gta iv for pc
Alright, well, I guess I'm going to be the only one saying good things.
I've got a Radeon 4850 HD graphics card, a shitty e4600 Intel processor, 4gbs of ram, XP SP3. I downloaded the Razor1911 crack and it's been running wonderfully, on near best settings, the only problems I've been having is the distance detail thing... Which Rockstar has the intention of fixing in patch.
So yeah, maybe it's something with the geniune version? Maybe it's has problems with nVidia cards, either way I suggest you try getting the Razor1911 release and see if it works any better.
Cheers, I've been playing this game for 6 hours straight :D

What resolution are you running it at?
I've got a 4850 and an X2 5000+ (at 3.1 GHZ) and I'm just not going to bother if it's not going to run well at medium settings at 1680x1050 at the very least.

I know, that is epic bullshit. It means that this game is the first game that won't run on my system AT ALL so far, due to me having 2 7600GT's in SLI. Most games run on my system, even the new games run at at least medium settings, sometimes at low. Anything pre-2008 I can max out at playable framerates, and just drop a few settings to get them to play smooth as silk. The only exception is Crysis.

Re: Do not buy gta iv for pc
What kind of results do you get for the benchmark?
I went as low as 720P and still had absolutely god awful performance. This game is just downright ugly, even at high settings, and it performs like shit no matter what I have it on. Even setting everything to low made no difference whatsoever. This is on a system that absolutely demolishes every current game, and ran Crysis at 1600x1200 with everything on High.
It also has what are without a doubt the ugliest looking shadows I've seen within the last 5 years. That Silent Hill PSP game had better looking shadows then this shit.
I would say this is the worst port job I've ever seen. It makes the Halo PC port look like a trophy wife.
