Relationships and military
This is a question for anyone has gone to the military while you were still together with your significant other.
I'm currently enlisted into the Marine Corps, and my ship date is still to be determined yet, but as it looks, it's going to be in the early part of next year. I currently have a GF, and debating on how to handle things before I leave. I love her, yes, but I'm torn as to how to handle the relationship before I leave next year.
Here's my question: For those who left for basic training, what did you do with your significant other in terms of the relationship?
If you're not in the military, I'd still value your input as to what to do for my situation.

Re: Relationships and military
Long distance relationships rarely work out, even more rare w/o one party cheating. I mean the whole basic thing is understandable but the time after that.... who knows.
How old are you? You would probably still have your whole life ahead of you for dating and I guaran-damn-tee that more women will come your way after basic.
Edit: I'm not in the military.

20, turning 21 this coming January.
The reason I ask this is because I have a friend who's currently in the Marine Corps as well. Him and his GF broke up because he thought he was being unfair to HER, not the other way around, or because of cheating on her end and what-not.
If both parties are dedicated on either end, would a miracle still work out?

Re: Relationships and military
Women are whores and will cheat on you and steal your money.
KEEP FUNDS SEPARATE.
I don't care if she calls you and needs money because the mobsters are gonna kill her, the bitch is dying before she gets any claim to your bank account or paycheck. You're gone for 8-12 months, do you really trust her to put her life on hold for that long?
You will get horny, she will get horny, she might stay loyal. Many women are loyal, but you need to give her an incentive to stay with you, and letting her have access to your funds totally ruins any incentive she may have to see you come home alive.
Take my advice with a grain of salt. About letting her go, not about the funds. YOU KEEP YOUR MONEY TO YOURSELF.
I've known enough servicemen who come home to debt because she was getting all this money and didn't have to work for it.
IF SHE HAS NO JOB, even if she's a student, for the love of God keep that shit away from her, and you might want to trade up.
Also, take advantage of POGs. They may deserve no respect, but many have 2 X chromosomes and if you've got some time off, well, just saying, nobody expects you to rely just on jacks for 8 months. Also, bring some Hustler, Jugs, or Playboy. There's no substitute for skin mags and unlike jail, that's the currency.
Also, good luck in the middle east, hopefully you're not a POG, and semper fi.

Yes of course man. Look at what people can achieve, a long distance relationship really isn't that much.
It all comes down to what type of people you are. If you think you can make it work, do it. But it's quite unfair on the girl.

As cynical as I can be sometimes I believe in love sometimes. It's completely possible that it could work out.
I know a couple that had a similar situation 2 years ago. About 4 or 5 years older though.
They met, liked each other to the point they were about to get married, he had just signed up for the marines before realizing what he had. They got married anyway, the girl was raised right and as far as I know she hasn't cheated and they are still married. I don't know what will happen in the future, no one does and that's the problem.

I kinda didn't want it to get that gruesome when he still had a bit of hope....
What I mean is, he knows what could happen, he just wanted to know his chances.

She's independent.
She has a job, and is currently putting herself through school with little help from her parents.
We had a discussion a few weeks about me and the military, but there was no serious talk and answers to any solution. A more serious discussion will eventually take place, but for now, I'm enjoying the time with her.
It's also funny how you mentioned all that shit above, as my friend, who just recently toured Iraq, brought a military whore home on his leave; you know, the kind of girl who hangs out around the bases and leeches off the servicemen for their money, health benefits, and other shit. He dumped the bitch immediately and sent her packing after discovering that she has THREE kids at the age of 20, and with no job.

Hey, he doesn't have to break up, but keeping his money for himself is KEY.
Worst this that happens? He comes home, does a little snooping, finds out she's been a good girl, and rewards her materialistically because he's got so much cash left over.
Even if she's loyal, it's easy for a woman to get carried away when she knows a paycheck is coming and she's not doing shit all for it.
One itty bitty grocery shop turns into years of credit cards used for stupid shit.
Save yourself the legal hassle of trying to get it back now, keep that shit away from her, or send it to your parents.

re read your initial post.
That was not the tone you had
Edit: it's also a given in any relationship to keep money to yourself.

I'm only putting it so harshly because it's hard to understand that women can be so cruel.
"I put my life on the line and she's at home blowing my money and my friends?"
Sad but true. Just keep her in a position that if it fucks up, you stand to lose nothing. You'd rather come home to a nice saving anyway, use it to pay a down payment and start a life, rather than coming home from a stressful tour and having even more stress, less money because you're home and out of hazardous duty, and having a total lapse of organization and control over your life.
As little freedom as you have in garrison, it's so nice knowing you don't have to worry about anything. I get up at 5, PT, shower and shave, eat, more PT, drill, more PT, etc, and then I'm told lights out and bed. It takes the hardest part of life off your shoulders and gives you freedom to excel at what you're doing without worrying about little shit.

I'm aware as to what money can do to a girl, but here's the thing.
She's not your stereotypical girl that expects everything in life, or as some people call it, your typical "Gold Digger". She's focused on school right now, and that's it, and I'm gladly supporting her every step of the way.
She never asks for anything, and if she does, it's extremely minor, such as a pack of cigarettes and what-not. Hell, I even asked her what she wanted for the holidays, and her answer was "To pass all her classes successfully and move on to next semester". I'm encouraging her as much as I can to stay in school and pursue her dreams, and she's doing a damn good job.
The military does make you good money, yes. I'm very good with finances, and plan on keeping it mostly all for myself, with the exception of helping out my dad who's currently busting his ass 16 hours of work each day, 6 days a week to pay off bills.
My goals are clear, you don't have to tell me anymore about that, but the question remains is how to talk to her about it before I actually leave.

Well then son you're off to a great start in life, and I wish you all the best.
Just remember your training, things can cluster fuck real bad real fast, so have someone keep and eye on shit while you're away. Hell, you can even check your finances yourself once a month or so, just to make sure it's all good. Put some money aside for her though, just to show you care (10% of a paycheck should be fine, if not excessive).
Also, for fucks sake, don't be a hero. IEDs are for the EOD or any Iraqi willing to make 20 bucks. They don't teach enough about mines like they used to, and chances are you're not going to find a nice little anti-personnel round but a nasty motherfucker with a half-dozen arty rounds attached to it. Leave it for the EOD or chase a dog onto it, don't attempt to defuse it out yourself.
Also, every decision you make will be the right one. Remember that. When you come home, be happy knowing you made all the right choices and you have no regrets.

You're worried about the wrong thing.
Even if she doesn't change. You will. That's what basic is all about.
The best thing to do is take it one baby step at a time, change at basic, when you come back for a bit see how things and if you would want to continue. But if you are out with the guys on leave or something(no idea) and you hit a bar or club, expect mass temptation..... you will have changed and you are still young, i KNOW hormones are going to be flying and I KNOW a lot of things will be worming in your head. Not many people settle down this young.
I'm not suggesting that you go out and start fucking random chicks. I'm saying the rest of your life is longer or shorter than you think.

Really, I don't find basic to be that much of a changer, though it depends on the person. You will be a lot more responsible and serious in the little details, but whether you'll change as a person deep down? Probably not, even after MOS school you won't change. Wait until the first deployment for the big change. It's just hard seeing all the assholes you meet in everyday society without wanting to punch them in the face.

I don't think anyone else said it better. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "He was so sweet/different/laid back before he went to basic...".
Long distance relationships are extremely difficult. I have no idea how many nights I've spent crying alone because I have no idea whether he's okay and no way to contact him. If you're both willing and understand what you'd have to go through to stay with each other, then there is no reason why you couldn't stay together.

Officer's quarters are too posh for any real adultery to take place. It happens, but it's like the royal society amongst army wives.
Enlisted women form a sewing circle so large they could knit all the uniforms the military needs in a day's work. Seriously, most army wives are bored and love to meet up and gossip.
That said, he probably doesn't live on base considering he hasn't been to basic yet, and he probably won't live on base unless he chooses to, and he probably won't think about it until he's back from the first deployment.

Dump her ass and focus on the USMC, we don't want little lover boys in the Marines, we want hardcore emotionless machines that take orders and do what their told, having a girlfriend while in the Marines will only make it harder and pull you down.
If you want to be in love, drop out NOW.
Why don't you join the marine core?

Tell her that you're not breaking up so much as, "departing". That way she can enjoy herself while you're gone and when you get back you can give it another shot.
Yea, I might. But I want to make sure I want to give 110% of myself for it before I sign up, I wouldn't want some pussy who wants to go home and be a bitch fighting beside me. I don't think you would want someone like that by you either.
Does anyone else remeber that guy in the ending of Animal House, "shot by his own troops in Vietnam"?

Re: Relationships and military
I just got back from MCRD San Diego, and let me just say there's at least a 50% chance you'll get a Dear John letter at boot camp anyways, so just tell Susie to wait around for you, maintain contact in the mail, etc. but at any time be expecting that letter. Have a nice day of IT and fuck-fuck games, and when you finally think you can unwind with some SDI square away time? BAM! Jody is balls deep in your girl while your in the rain room with 80 naked recruits and 20 shower heads.
Also, don't believe that bullshit about boot camp turning you into a hardass. I came back and people were amazed at how mellow I had become. After boot camp the vast majority of petty bullshit things civilians complain about are just slightly amusing, and you'll notice it too and think what a dumbass you must have been before bootcamp.
In the mean time, use your time in the DEP wisely and good luck. Hopefully I'll see you in the fleet.

At least if you were in the army you'd learn some cadences about how Jody doesn't fuck with 11Bs instead of going on about eskimo pussy all day.

Yeah we do. We get a shitload of marine commercials on TV, the best was the guy who fights the big fire demon and then turns into a marine.
And we have our own commercials.

It's not in the curriculum here in Ontario. They don't play Marine commercials on Canadian television networks? Why would they? CNN is the closest thing to a commercial that talks about marines.

Because 90% of TV we get is american?
Never watch football, hockey, etc? Movies on AMC, TBS, etc.
It's not taught in the curriculum in Ontario, but nothing really is. How do you not know the difference between Marine Corps and Marine Core?
