So I'm going back to college...
And my husband is being a real dick about it. He keeps preaching that it's a "bad idea" and that I have "no follow through" and stuff like that. It's really pissing me off! I wish he could just be happy for me instead of trying to sabotage my efforts to better myself. He freaks out about everything...Like when I started babysitting for extra money and then when I started selling my cookies and jam at the farmers market and now that I want to go to school. I feel like he just wants to keep me a prisoner, stuck in the house waiting for him to get home all day.
I've been a homemaker for 10 years...I just want to do something different...Something that sctually requires brain power. His negativity is really taking it's toll. It makes me all depressed and I don't want to even talk to him about it, but then I feel sad and resentful, because I want to share things with him.
What do you guys think?

Re: So I'm going back to college...
Have you thought about couple's counseling? He sounds too controlling to be able to discuss it just between the two of you.
What if you met with your husband and your shrink and tried to discuss it calmly between the three of you?

Seriously, any third party would tell you that he's an immature, controlling, jealous prick. Typical army guy: tough on the outside but still a little boy inside. Any man that controlling has no confidence in himself.
Do it, be up front about it. He needs to understand that he can't walk all over you. I would really suggest counselling, or it's just gonna get worse. What kind of selfish ass of a man holds back someone he loves?

It's your life. Do what you please. Assert yourself girl.
Sounds like he has the old fashioned mindset that the male is the breadwinner and that the wife should stay home and clean. Calmly explain to him that although you respect his opinion in this instance he should keep it to his fucking self. Life is temporary.

This. If you're with a guy like that you probably have some issues too. Counseling will fix a lot of the issues. Until then, make sure to openly communicate with him.

Re: So I'm going back to college...
you're breaching his comfort zone. you're stepping away from your homemaking role.
by going to college you're doing your "own thing" and he doesn't want stuff to change and for you to grow independent of him.
that how i see it.
so what are you going to do after college? probably work.... again doing your own thing and perhaps not concentrating on him and the home in as much depth as you currently do.
has he gone to college? if not perhaps he sees it as an attempt "to wear the pants".
did you make an effort to including him, ask for opinions go to open day with him and that stuff or were you more "this is what I'm doing and that that"...... make him feel needed.
This is the problem with the American lifestyle, women consider themselves equal to men and assume that men also think that. In reality men really want to control their women. sure when its only boyfriend/girlfriend everyones says "do whatever you want, honey" but after they get married, men just want to settle down and have a wife that will do what is suggested.
The art of manipulation is dead to "modern women", if they want something, they just lay their cards on the table and say "this is what i'm doing. don't like it? Tough!". The days of gently wearing down a man into submission or coercing him into acceptance are over. man doesn't get a say in what his wife is doing.
In the real world, life isn't like what you see on friends, sex and the city or whatever. In the real world, none of the characters from sex and the city would ever have gotten successfully married. they would have been labeled whores and just women to "fuck around with".
The sooner women understand that if they think they are equal and everyone pretends they are equal it doesn't actually mean they ARE equal the better. feminists never marry, think about that.
I sort of went off on a tangent....none of the last four paragraphs are necessarily directed at you, Xiao Mei. I just wanted to put it out there.

Who says I want to get a job? Anyway, the only thing my husband hates more than the idea of me going to college, is the idea of me getting a JOB. Also, I don't have to pay for it. I'm getting tuition assistance from the Air Force.

I can tell you exactly why he hates the idea of you going to college.
He knows damn well that at least one of the profs will be an older guy with a beard.
With in a month you'd be knicker wetting at the thought of taking his class, won't you?
No I know you'd never be unfaithful and I'm sure deep down your husband knows it too but...

Jeez whats with all the negativity. You know you got it well, and it could be a lot worse. Like your husband could be in fact, your father who locks you up in his basement for 25 years and bares him 13 children.

Uhh...talk to him. Hear him out, let him know you're listening to him, find out why he feels that way, then tell him to fuck off because you're going to college any way. That's seriously what I'd do.
*edit*

So you've been married since you were 17 or 18, and you have no job or further education to fall back on because you basically live in the shadow of your husband, who makes the decisions for you.
I wouldn't feel comfortable if I thought my life had such little meaning, but to each their own. In the Victorian Era, women were fully content as homemakers with fewer privileges than men.

I'm happy taking care of my husband and daughter...I don't want to go to school because I think my life has little meaning. I want to go because before I got married I graduated high school at 14 years old and had already done 3 years worth of college credit by the time I was 17. Then I had a breakdown, had to be hospitalized, dropped out of college, met my husband and got married. I want to do something intellectually challenging again.
I plan to study astronomy. That's what I was studying before...To be an astronomer.

sorry, you don't want to go to college to learn, you want to go to college to socialize. This isn't necessarily bad, but considering there are probably a lot of young, handsome, arrogant and athletic men at college there's a pretty good chance you'll "Fall in love"and leave him.
Women are just not in control of themselves. You're 20 fucking 8, it's too late to decide you want to go to college. If you're really that desperate to learn and better yourself, use all the tuition money for books and just read.

Well it's been over 10 years, so the credits don't count anymore. It really does kind of blow. Luckily, my high school grades and SAT still count, so I can still get scholorships and stuff. I had a 3.8 grade point average when I dropped out of college before...I'm hoping to do better this time. I was only 14 when I did my first year of college classes, so I was pretty immature.

Honestly though, OP, it's never a good idea to piggyback off another person; you never know when they'll kick you off. And seeing as how your husband sounds like a rather sketchy fellow, it's always nice knowing you can make it on your own.
By the way, is he/are you in any way or form religious? Just wondering.

How are you going to deal with the homework and reading load? Is your husband going to spend more time watching your daughter? Babysitter?

I'm only going to go part time and I'm not taking classes in the summer. I'm only going to attend classes when my daughter is in school.

Re: So I'm going back to college...
Good one :D:D
Honestly though, OP, it's never a good idea to piggyback off another person; you never know when they'll kick you off. And seeing as how your husband sounds like a rather sketchy fellow, it's always nice knowing you can make it on your own.
By the way, is he/are you in any way or form religious? Just wondering.
My husband isn't sketchy...He just hates change. He would never leave my daughter and I high and dry...Even if we split up, he'd still have to pay me child support and alimony. The alimony would go on for...5 1/2 years and the child support for the next 11 years at least. This is assuming we split up today, BTW.:P We also have a decent amount of assets and savings. I want to go to college for my own education and self growth...Not because I'm worried about money.
