Default Cutting the support wires from power poles.

I got the idea to cut about 6 feet of power line that comes to the ground to support poles. The only problem is I dont know what the wire will do when cut. Will it fling up, and touch the live wires, becoming brifely live, or just drape down like a cord? Will the wire be too stiff to bend, or can it be wraped up? Also, how many pounds of copper would I get? Most power lines are a half inch wide, with like a quarter inch of copper inside the metal.

The support wires aren't copper. You shouldn't be messing with power poles if you don't know how to handle electrical current.

The insides are copper, on some, I have no way of knowing all. What about the thin grounding wire for lightning? How many pounds could I get from that?

Thumbs up Re: Cutting the support wires from power poles.

It would be kind of funny to cut the support wires before a storm. That way the wind will blow them over and people will be without electricity for a while

Power lines are usually copper especially in older neighborhoods, alluminum is used for new installations. Copper prices have gone down a bit recently but it's still worth quite a substantial amount of money. I'm hanging on to a bunch of copper bus bars until the prices peak. Copper is only worth your time if you're getting massive quantities like if you're stripping abandoned houses/buildings. You're not gonna get shit stealing ground wires off utility poles. You can even get fried cutting a ground but it's less likely to happen compared to cutting the high current lines.

those cables that hold the pole up are galvanized steel wire. you would need to steal around 2000 pounds of it to make a hundred bucks.

The ground wire from the top of the pole to the bottom probably weighs less than 3 pounds and its dull corroded copper that is not worth nearly as much as shiny bright copper so you wont get much there.

if you cut the support cables they will snap as most are under a lot of tension. If the pole is already leaning it could possibly begin to slowly fall down but this might take a few hours to a few days.
