So whats actually happened this decade?
Seriously lets look at what we've got.
Emo/Screamo
new rave (ever seen nathan barley)
indie
really shit metal
grime (personally I like, but it's completely drowned out by all the other crap)
God I wish I was in the 90s

Re: So whats actually happened this decade?
There's only been like three albums I've enjoyed the entire decade.
Fear of a Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree
Original Pirate Material by The Streets
The Illusion of Safety by Thrice
And that's pretty much it.

Plenty of good ska and punk still being made.
Blake Schwarzenbach (Jawbreaker, Jets To Brazil) is starting up a new band. Can't wait.

I was trying to think of a new band that came out this decade that I really liked, but I just haven't yet.
I'm only 24, I'm too young to be saying "well music back in MY day....." There's got to be something.

This.
I was listening to black stone cherry the other week. though they were pretty cool. Until I realised thed lead singer sounds like scott stapp and eddie vedder. Eddie is cool, but scot stapp? what a douche. Black Stone are stillgood however, but when I think of Scott Stapp it pains me.
Drop Kick Murphys and Flogging Molly are still putting out awesome stuff.

There are a few scattered punk bands that are really cool, and I liked Damien Marley's album a lot. Oh, and the new Streetlight Manifesto CD is fucking tits. There's good stuff out there, not necessarily up on Billboard.
But the sad thing is, we'll be remembered for bland, disposable pop, shitty ringtone rap, and Brokencyde*.

Er...
The Bling Bling Gangsta Era In Hip Hop?
Developments in metal and that whole emo screamo crap, as was stated.... bloody scene kids, even though emo was developed in 1985 by rites of spring...
Part of UK garage really taking off... then coming down again.. then coming up again recently...
Music getting louder and louder (by which I mean, reduced microdynamics)
Ooo oooo... Illegal music download became big :D
Nu/Urban Rnb went seriously (and annoyingly) mainstream
Youtube music videos
... hmmm... can't tihnk of much else that hasnt been stated on the OP...

Dr Rubberfunk
Dirty Pretty Things (again only one decent album)
Chicane
Adequate Seven

Only two, possibly three of those bands, would be considered indie and they are the few that rose above the mountains of mediocre indie drivel and were decent bands.

Re: So whats actually happened this decade?
This decade? There's been some good stuff.
Jaga Jazzist came out with "What We Must", my favorite album from them.
Radiohead came out with a whole bunch of wicked awesome stuff.
Tool came out with Lateralus, and 10,000 Days (10K Days being...not too bad, Lateralus being fucking amazing).
Bonobo started making albums in the early 21st century (their first being...2002? Don't quote me on that), and is actually really good.
Massive Attack is also quite good.
However, I agree that there's about 98 percent garbage out there. It infuriates me that subpar garbage gets by so easily.

Yes well 10 years ago was 1998. I'm sure they were before the decade. Maybe had he said score, it would be a little more credible.
And bbtc: It's not that Mars Volta is overrated, it's that they're trying something that people aren't used to. I have a lot of respect for the kooky and eerie feeling of the mars volta. Cedric and Omar really do creep me the fuck out, and turn me off sometimes, but after a few listens, most of their music reall makes you feel inadequate because they're pretty fantastic at what they're trying to do.

Their time signatures are rather unique. Just because you're a retrofag doesn't mean you have the right to tell me who is talented and who isn't. Their drummer won the guitar center drum off at like age 8. What did you do at age 8? Learn how to not shit in your pants? Good job, captain.

The last thing you said sounds more like "I'm a whiny bitch who can't play music, so I make fun of bands I don't understand". You can have your opinion... it's just a shitty one because you're in no position to claim Cedric Bixler-Zivala or Omar Rodriguez or anyone else in TMV plays stupid songs. You're not a musician, you wouldn't understand. You said it yourself.

are you saying that only people who play music, can appreciate it? i appreciate all types of music, and respect anyone who can play an instrument. it isn't easy.
but that doesn't mean i have to enjoy listening to every band out there.
for instance, that faggot from dashboard confessional can play the guitar, but do you like his music? i doubt it. and neither do i.
so fuck off with your elitist attitude. just because you can play an instrument (assuming from posts), doesn't make you more apt to form an opinion on what makes a band good.

I may be a cunt, but I'm not dumb.
And you still can't talk bad about Chris Cabberas either. You said it yourself that you're no musician, so you wouldn't understand what makes these people good musicians. Yet you wanna tell everyone they play stupid songs and are dumb. Maybe when you learn how to correctly speak of musicians who have more talent in their eyebrows than you do in your entire body, even if you don't appreciate them, in a respectful manner, then I won't be such a twat towards you for digging that hole.

Re: So whats actually happened this decade?
so fuck off with your elitist attitude. just because you can play an instrument (assuming from posts), doesn't make you more apt to form an opinion on what makes a band good.
Actually, it does.
Take a simple fucking theory class and you'll realize how much effort and hard work gets put into the music you're putting down, and how little gets put into the music you probably praise. Not to mention how much musicianship it takes to not only play it, but phrase it correctly and put some sort of musicality into it (when there's a meter change every bar, you really have to pay attention to what the fuck you're doing).
And are you fucking kidding me? The songs are too long? Do you have the attention span of a fucking goldfish or something?
If everyone in the world were an educated musician, then at LEAST half of the garbage that gets accepted by retarded people with too much money (or their parents' money) wouldn't even be out there.

i don't think you have to be a musician, but knowing a little bit of theory and being able to follow exactly what all the instruments are doing is a major component of critical music listening. mars volta are a very impressive band if you can hear them correctly.

Re: So whats actually happened this decade?

No it doesnt. People appreciate art without being artists themselves. Furthermore, why can a painter criticise another persons sculpture? They may both be artists, but they do different things. Things the other may know little about.
Take a simple fucking theory class and you'll realize how much effort and hard work gets put into the music you're putting down, and how little gets put into the music you probably praise. Cliffs Of Dover was written in 5 - 10 minutes. And that is one hell of an instrumental by the legendary Eric Johnson. He says it just came naturally. Doesnt seem like it was much hard work. Good songs =/= Complex, difficult or advanced songwriting. In actual fact, its usually the opposite. Simple songs are usually more successful. Ofcourse, songs that have came about through a lot of hard work are equally good, its simply not always necessary.
Not to mention how much musicianship it takes to not only play it, but phrase it correctly and put some sort of musicality into it (when there's a meter change every bar, you really have to pay attention to what the fuck you're doing).I think youre exaggerating a bit here. Phrasing is a pretty basic idea, and meter changes every bar, providing they dont change to odd time signatures, isnt hard to play over, and if they are odd.. well I doubt it would sound too good.
And are you fucking kidding me? The songs are too long? Do you have the attention span of a fucking goldfish or something?
Most commercial songs are 3 - 5 minutes for a reason. Thats how long people are generally interested in a piece of music. Genres where a lot more development occurs like prog rock and classical, can go on much longer while staying interesting, but even then, some people will get bored. [/quote]

People like different things. People like different food, different clothes, different cars, different TV shows etc. Same with music. One mans garbage is another mans treasure.

i'm well aware of the time and energy that goes into making music.
but the mars volta being overly technical does not constitute them being a good band.
their music is horribly congested and boring.
but maybe, i just dont "get it".

The Mars Volta makes up for all the fails. I've seen a lot of people have already mentioned them, so I'll throw in something new - the return of John Frusciante and his great solo works.

Re: So whats actually happened this decade?
you're right, their innovative lyrics and talent will be remembered for centuries to come. The composition is astounding, amazing out of box beats that Beethoven could have never dreamed of. Millionaires are in my book considered the Mozart of the 21st century, only closely followed by Wesely Willis.

NOOOOO, he is a true musician, songs such as "my mom smokes crack rocks" and "Chronic Schizophrenia" were amazingly well composed, the use of his keyboard's song bank was truly some thing to behold.

I just remember his album where every song was the same, just with a different band name and an attribute. I couldn't stop laughing.

Re: So whats actually happened this decade?
Meh, none of which compare to what was released pre 2000.
With Teeth - Lame
Year Zero - Pretty Good
Ghosts - Awesome if you're in the mood for it
The Slip - Decent
"Right Where It Belongs" is almost as sad as "Hurt". :(
Year Zero sparked a desire in me for more dystopian books.
I saw them live at Voodoo Experience, and they played some songs from Ghosts and The Slip. It was pretty good, but only my friends on acid really liked the Ghosts interludes. Nobody knows the words to any songs on The Slip yet, apparently.
But during the encore when he played "Hurt", it was just a beautiful moment, where everyone in the crowd felt connected. :)
But I digress, my head got punched at least six times during March of the Pigs.

Re: So whats actually happened this decade?
No it doesnt. People appreciate art without being artists themselves. Furthermore, why can a painter criticise another persons sculpture? They may both be artists, but they do different things. Things the other may know little about.
That's why artists get away with so much shit too. The quality of ANY sort of art, be it music, sculpting, painting, etc, goes down when you have people who don't know what makes it good, but have money to buy it.
Retardedly simple songs are usually more successful for the same reason as I stated above. If you can't back up what makes a song interesting with anything other than "it sounds good", then it's no good. How are you looking at songs being simple? Some people may say the song "Because" (by the Beatles) is simple, when the vocal score for it is incredible.
I think youre exaggerating a bit here. Phrasing is a pretty basic idea, and meter changes every bar, providing they dont change to odd time signatures, isnt hard to play over, and if they are odd.. well I doubt it would sound too good.
I know. I was keeping the terminology in laymans terms for now so that people didn't get lost with where I was going.
Most commercial songs are 3 - 5 minutes for a reason. Thats how long people are generally interested in a piece of music. Genres where a lot more development occurs like prog rock and classical, can go on much longer while staying interesting, but even then, some people will get bored.
That's exactly what I'm saying! Do you not see what makes music interesting? It's all the fucking musical developments which occur in the song you're listening to! There's songs that I listen to on the fucking radio that don't even have a single note of DISSONANCE in them at all. They aren't interesting, they're just massmarketed garbage that fucking morons will buy off of undeserving "musicians".
I'm a very well educated musician and I like lots of music people claim is total crap. People like different things. People like different food, different clothes, different cars, different TV shows etc. Same with music. One mans garbage is another mans treasure.
It's NOT the same with music. Opinion plays into it a bit, but you can always back up WHY something is good for reasons other than "it sounds nice". For example - I fucking HATE opera, but I can give it my respect because I can look through a score and find alot of interesting bits and pieces in it.
I fucking HATE the Sex Pistols, and they don't get a single lick of my respect whatsoever. They could probably play their instruments better with their faces than with their hands, and the shit they write lacks diversity (even from ITSELF) and is an all inclusive mix of being harmonically, melodically, and musically boring.
If you can back up WHY your music is good, then it probably is. But the fact with alot of musicians that are making the most money nowadays, is that you can't do that.

"Right Where It Belongs" is by far the best song on that album, followed by "Beside You In Time".
