Re: Death Valley trip
You fucked up dude...You should have gone to the Sand dunes...
It's so awesome to camp out in the sand dunes, and in the middle of the night, go sledding down the dunes. pure awesomeness.

Yeah, that movie did have an impact on me there. We were all talking about how scary that shit would have been. It's so dark and quiet there at night, it's just eerie..

Sorry man, my friend has a shitty camera. I wanted to make it my desktop background.

We actually did go to the sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells. My friends camera was out of batteries at that time though, but fun times! Good old sand sledding.

I've been to the one in that second picture. It's also really fun at stopping at abandoned shacks and gas stations on the way to Bishop. Neato indeed.

Re: Death Valley trip
Nice.. That one photo of the path that zig zags in the black hills is really cool from what I've seen online. I never been deep into Death Valley. I don't own a 4x4 just a large pickup truck and looking at the muddy backroads I'm about 99% sure I would get stuck in the mud.
I want to go to Devils Racetrack Playa. where the rocks move. Something to do with the ground freezing up and the rocks skidding across. but other people believe it's something to do with mysterious magnetic properties in the rocks.
Some believe Ghost.
Blah, i just want to camp out there for the night. Now is the time to go. Between Dec-Lat Jan before it gets to hot.

Re: Death Valley trip
I was expecting this to be about a peyote trip in the desert, but still; pretty cool. There's not really anywhere in Britain where I could have a trip like this, afaik, which is unfortunate because it looks awesome.

Dude, righteous adventure.
You took really nice pictures, too.
Now I'll have to plan something like that.

Damn, I'd never heard of those before. Those rocks are fucking weird, man.
Especially this:
Quote:
|
Karen (stone J) is a 29 by 19 by 20 inch (74 by 48 by 51 cm) block of dolomite and weighs an estimated 700 pounds (about 320 kg). Perhaps not surprisingly Karen didn't move during the monitoring period. The stone may have created its 570 straight and old track from momentum gained from its initial fall onto the wet playa. However, Karen disappeared sometime before May 1994, possibly during the unusually wet winter of 1992 to 1993. Removal by artificial means is considered unlikely due to the lack of associated damage to the playa that the needed truck and winch would have done. A possible sighting of Karen was made in 1994 a half mile (800 m) from the playa.
|
700lb's of rock just... disappears.

Re: Death Valley trip
I spent just part of a day in death valley. I was nearby and decided to check out a couple ghost towns, since I will not likely be in that part of the country again for a long while. It was fun.

I saw those! The area was flooded though so we couldn't take a good look at the rock trails, but it's REALLY weird. I kind of think the frozen ice sheet theory might be accurate, but some of the rocks are like 80lbs! It's ridiculous.
I've decided to buy a 4Runner 4x4 to go out in a convoy this winter break, I'll be sure to post pictures of the new mining towns and other stuff we explore.
That's cool you went^^^ it's probably the best time to go, since it's not 120 degrees F out.
I'm surprised this got randomly bumped.
