Default Son, Your Girlfriend ISN'T important.

Thought I'd post up a conversation I just had with my youngest, well actually it was more a paternal monologue/rant than a conversation, maybe it'll give one of the teens here an insight into the parental mindset and save some grief...maybe.

Son, your girlfriend IS NOT important or rather her happiness isn't. Not to me anyway. She's a nice enough girl and I know she's your first big love an' all but she also makes a whole heap of demands on you, your time and your money.

Keeping her happy isn't my responsibility and her happiness does not rank over the good of this family.

I know she gives you constant 'ear ache' and keeps phoning you to do this and that but you need to man up, put your foot down, maybe even put her over your knee.

You walked out on your job today and that is fair enough. The Chef was being a cunt and truth be told, back in the day, I would have broken his face before walking out. But I'm glad you didn't, even if you felt like it cos that was back in the day when you could deck a man for calling you a wanker and not go to prison.

But you need to be on the phone today finding more work not swanning off to take her Highness somewhere just cos she's booooooooooored.

I told you that if you want to drive the car then it'll cost us $500 a month just in insurance, and that's before you put petrol in the thing so you can be your girlfriend's taxi service.

You know that there is no way I can find that sort of money each month and I sure as hell don't see why I should.

Sort your girlfriend out. She wants the nice stuff ? She likes having an older boyfriend with a car? Then she'll have to accept the fact you have to work for it. And whatever else you do boy, you sure need to adjust her tone. Ain't no woman ever spoken to me the way she speaks to you. I don't care how good the sex is, you ain't her lap dog and its about time you made that plain to her."

Tell it like it is, good on you.

Also include how you feel about her, and what you dont like about her, but aside from that.

You rule :)

Every now and then mayo is a nice change up in a bacon sarnie.. but it can never replace the excellence that is HP brown sauce.

I think you've got a good way of handling things Jack, tough but fair, cruel to be kind. Think I need to man up a bit myself.

What the bloody hell do you drive that costs £270 a month? Even when I'd just passed my test I was only paying £150 a month, and that was for a classic MG sports car...

Having a girlfriend from a different lifestyle is very difficult though. My girlfriend is at university and it was horrible having to peel myself out of bed at 7am after two or three hours sleep. She was pretty understanding but I can imagine that a lot of (especially much younger) girls don't really know what it's like to live in the real world.

£250 actually-I work it £=2 US$.

An old Astra. There are probably very few crashes with classic MG sports-the few kids that have the skills to drive one probably drive accordingly (not slow but careful). Whereas every boy racer ever has probably crashed an Astra. Son chose the car otherwise I would have gone for something a bit cheaper to insure...like a Robin Reliant.

No the exchange rate is way worse than that.

It's probably over £300 by now...

I've never heard of anyone paying three grand to insure an Astra... christ where do you live, Belfast in 1979?

EDIT

$500 = £325

Well I did the whole Elephants Are Confused.com thang. Cheapest was about 1,400 p.a. and they ranged up to 6000. I'll change to the 1,400 soon but they want a huge cash deposit (£500) upfront and I don't have that with Xmas on it's sparkly way.

It is ridiculous, I've often had hi-performance cars and not paid more than £30 a month. But I didn't have a car for 2 years and a month, until Son learnt to drive so of course I lost all my NC as well (he's on my insurance).

Did your insurance rates jump after Hurricane Katrina? There was a lot of talk of how the companies had to raise their rates because of their losses. Even though they've generally been profitable. Makes me think that with all the investments they do with their cash: they've got a whole new bunch of excuses to raise premiums these last few months.

So you pay 3k a year in insurance? Not sure about the UK laws, but do you have to insure it? I mean, how much does the car cost? Sounds like you could save a lot of money insuring it yourself (aka putting money aside every month).

I've had that same talk with a lot of friends. It's good not to lose sight of yourself and the people around you when you get into a "real" relationship.

If he has good grades, or even decent ones, you could be able to get a discount on the insurance. My parents only agreed to pay for mine after they saw the discount.

lol,

this reminds me a conversation i had with my dad some year back when i still had conversation with him.

he was talking something along the lines of my wife (then gf) was a high-school dropout, demanding, unrespectfull, etc.etc...

i worked in a local supermarket back then as i was still in school and didn't have time for a better/more interesting job, and she didn't have a day-job - she worked in a club at night. (at the bar). so when she had time it was during the afternoon - the time i ran back and forth between school and work and wahtnot. in the end i quit that job and my dad blamed it on her... to bad by that time i had already severed msot of my connections with him due to his behavior, but i quit that job due to the new managment and that i had found a awsome part time job ( the one i now have full-time: web developer)

the bad part is. he was partly right - she was a high-school dropout.... other then that she was about as demanding as any kitten i've ever seen. she wanted attention and litle else - she never even once asked me for gifts or some such that would cost me money. i did spend it on her but that was definatly my call. i had to threaten her before she would accept me buying her something.... grrr

he calls it the way he sees it - i do the way i see it. litle does he know that back then we had just started experimenting with bdsm and whatnot.... aah, great fun.

in any case, i have to agree - first loves ar a pain inthe ass most of the time - andh e has to know his limits and let her know them as well. if he cant drive her around - he cant. if he doesn't have time - he doesn't. and she can whine all she bloody well wants.... that or spank her a few time - worked with mine when she was being overly stuborn.

Yeah, you legally have to have road tax, insurance and MOT certificate in order to have a car on the road.

Road tax and MOT make sense, but insurance? It's my money that's at risk, surely I should be able to choose whether I want to take the risk or not?

If a law doesn't make any sense, it shouldn't be there.

Care to explain, why exactly insurance should be mandatory?

Because two thirds of people think they are good or better than average drivers. Very very few of them would actually have the cash to cover even a smallish personal injury claim let alone a major pile up.

Road tax would only make sense if the government actually ring fenced the monies raised to be used for the roads.

MOT also makes little sense in practice but there is a logic behind it.

I was in a minor car accident when I was 11 and came out shaken up but without a scratch on me. I got £4500 personal injury compensation. Most people just dont have that sort of money at hand.

Pay for one month at a time, realistically you should only need one month's worth of practise in your fathers car before taking your test.
