The Core i7
So, what do you guys think of it? I think it seems pretty beastly, hopefully the octocores will be out by the time I decide to upgrade from my AMD Athlon X2 4200+.
Anyway, discuss!

Re: The Core i7
The Benchmarks are cool but i would suggest that you wait a little bit more, because the prices will lower themselves eventually and i think AMD is launching another processor to rival Core i7.
Also Intel will launch an extreme type version just for the fuck of it .
If your current setup works then you can wait a bit longer.

Re: The Core i7
Oh I wasn't planning on upgrading anytime soon. I don't have the money. Not even close....
It just seems pretty damn sweet is all. Even the first gen Core i7's are quite a bit faster than current Core 2 Quads. I am curious however as to what AMD launches to rival the Core i7. I've always been an AMD man, so I'll be excited if its kickass.

Re: The Core i7
i think they're awesome. i keep looking at prices, and adding up parts, but it's all still way out of my price range at this point. i'd love to have one because i do lots of renderings, and i bet those things'd be speedy as hell. maybe sometime over the summer i'll be able to get some money for a new rig...

Re: The Core i7
*Shrug*
I don't really think the price is worth it at the moment.
Actually, since this topic is about processors, I'll just ask this here:
Would it be wise to buy a q6600 or a q9550 at the moment?
Or should I wait?
I'm planning on overclocking whatever I get as much as I can on air.
I don't see much of a point of buying the latest shit when I can just overclock the q6600 or q9550.
Would be used for dvd playback/dvd decoding, games (WANT FALLOUT 3), etc.
Probably won't be hooked up to the internet much, as I have dial up.

It depends on how long you wait, because the i7 will definitely get cheaper, and then LGA 775 will be obsolete and thus difficult to upgrade when you need to. Also I'm sure AMD will release a competitor the Core i7 soon, so that should be worth waiting for, so see how it stacks up.
When I built my comp in Nov. 2006, I used a Socket 939 AMD dual core processor, because those were top of the line shit at the time (better than Intel's original Core architecture). Looking back, I should've gotten a Socket AM2 mobo and CPU, because even though it was more expensive, it was much more upgradable.
Right now, it is nearly impossible to find a decent cheap Socket 939 CPU that would suffice to upgrade my current, and I also can only use DDR 400 RAM, which is more expensive than the faster DDR2 RAM.
With the Core i7 you are getting different architecture, a different socket motherboard, and support for DDR 3 triple channel RAM. I would wait because you might regret having to spend more money in the future when you have to build a whole new PC just to upgrade. Wait until the i7 really hits off and gets cheaper, and jump on that when you can.

Damn, I'm torn.
I could probably get most of the parts to get a nice q9550 machine running, or I could wait two months until I'm 16, and get a job with my friend to pay for a Core i7 system.

Damn dude you're not 16 yet? Haha I built my first comp when I was 15. I'm 17 now, still running the same comp.
I would wait and get the more future proofed system. I sorta wish I did, now I gotta overclock and stretch my current performance.
