Splinter (2008)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1031280/
It's got a 6.6 on IMDB, but I'd give it a solid 7, and probably an 8 just for being rather innovative with straight-up B-horror material. It basically is about a group of people that get trapped in a gas station fighting an infectious organism somewhat similar to John Carpenter's Thing.
There's a steadily paced setup, and then the shit hits the fan really abruptly. I don't want to spoil what the creatures look like, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
The characters are likeable, smart, and fairly interesting, and although it's pretty much by-the-numbers with a bit of cheesiness here and there...I thought it was a fun ride, particularly the first 2 acts. It only got a really limited release, but you can find it on torrents or RS.

Re: Splinter (2008)
Sounds like a boring premise, but I'll check it out for the production values. My excitement over small release movies has been prenty righteous these days, such as for "Felon" and "500 Days of Summer".
