EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
i make a dream
(make a emp with the lightning.)
it's a theory, but i think it's possible.
you have to make a Lightning rod, but
a coil Lightning rod .
A coil antenna who is as a Lightning rod. The Lightning make the coil antenna radiate the very powerful emp, due to lighting power.
what do you think about it, any comment welcome !
sorry for my poor englsh, hope you can uderstand me

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
so you wanna make a lightning based tesla coil?? That's what it sounds like anyway...but no, that wont work

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
it ' a coil antenna, the coil antenna emit electromagnetic wave if a alternatif current power it.
it's the same, but the current is the lighting who is a very powerful and very short current.
it should emit a very powerful and short electromagnetic wave : an emp.

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
So you build a lightning rod that directs the flow of electrons through a coil...
Better get a patent for this before someone steals your great idea.

Sure, it will create a magnetic field for a fraction of a second.

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
(no matter if it be destroyed by the lightnig.)
you have to make it with the same material (ligntning rod)
if we can make lighting rod, why we can't add him coil (spiral)?

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
patent ?
who can need this theory ?
1) it create nothing, it destroy ...
2) it's depends of lightning who is very random
i wonder if it works really, what range can we obtain ?
have you study electromagnetic ?
i am not to intelligent for calculate the coil, do you have some way for do this ?
thank you

Lightning is not hotter than the surface of the sun. The main problem that I see with this setup is arcing. I think it actually might be possible to make a loose enough coil to work this. Unfortunately, I don't have all of the data I would need. And a project like this is kinda hard to experiment with.

Yeah, you would need a shitload of insulation, no?
Anyway, wouldn't there be quite a bit of impedance in the coil, given that power is consumed in forming the magnetic field? Would this perhaps deter the lightning from going through it?

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
My biggest doubt is that lightning can create a large enough changing current. The sources of EMPs are usually released electrons ionized by nuclear reactions, but in pure theory changing the current through a conductor fast enough creates electric fields which can cause damage (in a lab you need to be careful not to just turn off a strong electromagnet if you don't want to fuck up all your electronics). I don't even know if this even qualifies as an electromagnetic pulse though, because it couldn't propagate over high distances like a high-altitude nuclear explosion can.

There are non-nuclear EMP's that apparently do pretty well. Behold the explosively pumped flux compression generator! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosively_pumped_flux_compression_generator)

Hence why I would be concerned with arcing. The impedence of the coil might result in the lighning merely arcing along the coil.

yes i don't think about arcing, it can be a real problem, can we make a good insulating who resist lightning voltage ?

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
Your maximum range would be limited by the horizon -depending on the height of your rod (lulz). So about thirteen miles is a decent estimate. You should check this out- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosively_pumped_flux_compression_generator . As far as a patent goes, forget it. The idea is a simple one and the effect is more easily obtained with the above link. If you want predictable lightning- follow Tesla's example and pay Colorado springs a visit.
whoops ya guess i got beat to the link- pure water is a good insulator.

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
i know FCG flux compression generator, but it's very hard to make it. (impossible)
The explosive is not a problem.
my problem is the two switchs :
one for the détonation of explosive when the magnetic field is maximun (how to make this switch?)
the second for liberate the curent to the load when it's maximum (how to make this switch ?)
my theory (Lightning coil rod) is very simple.
no timming, no problem that can't be solve. (for a electromagnetic engineer).
can you give me a way for make the coil (

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
Anyone want to use some scientific background to backup the OP thread?
Sounds like a brilliant idea.
I'm surprised it never crossed my mind.
I mean, EMPs are to be released in a small amount of time; and lightning occurs in a small amount of time.
Perhaps you could trap lightning from a surrounding area to do multiple pulses.
Multiple pulses would increase efficiency.
I'm not a physicist, but it'd be nice if someone with physics knowledge stepped in to give a serious response to this thread.
Wait, you're actually trying to make this shit?
That's rather irresponsible
... :/ "stfu"

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
Seeing as how it uses lightning, I don't think many people would have alot of experience in this area. I'll see if any of the guys from Lab Tips can help.

Re: EMP (electro magnetic pulse)
I bet he is going to use it to break into a casino in Las Vegas.
Seriously though, it will be hard to actually "catch" the lightning. It's so unpredictable, I watched a movie were scientists used rockets into a thunder cloud with a thin wire to create the lightning and they were having a difficult time.
Unless your just hoping to get lucky and fuck with your neighbors during thunder storms you would need to find a open field or something and a huge metal pole.
