Tattoos - the relationship breaker
I'm sure most already know this unspoken rule. Getting a tattoo of a significant other's name on you is only a way to jump start the inevitable break up.
[tl/dr] So most of my coworkers are nerds with no real life experience. I just work in that kind of field where almost everyone I will ever work with is that way. I was talking to one of my coworkers about this subject and the rest just couldn't believe it. They thought getting a tattoo of a person's name on themselves would be the ultimate gift of endearment. I then went on about how many guys I know that have tattoo cover ups because they were stupid enough to go through with stuff like this. One girl said, "But my girl has a tattoo of her boyfriend's name on her arm." To which I replied, "Thats because her baby's daddy is most likely in jail. I bet the name she has tattooed on her arm is his nick name and not his real name." To which she said I was completely correct.
Then I tried to logically work it out for them about respect issues. Like how one would lose respect for the other after getting such a tattoo. How it probably starts out with fear that maybe both partners in the relationship aren't really seeing eye to eye on how far they want to carry out the relationship. Then follows with a loss of respect for the other for not being able to see the imbalance between the two. Personally, I don't know... its never happened to me.[tl/dr]
So has anyone on totse ever broken a relationship because of this issue? I'd like to hear why getting a tattoo of a significant other's name is a deal breaker from someone who has actually been in the situation.

No... IT is way more social than the crap fest I work in. At least IT guys joke around about disturbing shit they find on the internet.

Re: Tattoos - the relationship breaker
I've never been in that situation but I think the main reason it doesn't work out is cuz most relationships don't work out. Regardless of name tattoos, most relationships aren't gonna last anyway.

If you look like this

you don't really have much to lose. Otherwise, I'd say don't do it.

I'll never understand getting a girlfriend/boyfriends name tattooed on ones self. It makes me furious when I see it too.

I've never broken up with someone for doing this, because I try to avoid dating mentally handicapped/the dregs of society.

Re: Tattoos - the relationship breaker
i would NEVER get their name tattooed on them unless i felt something for them i have never felt for a girl to this day and it was a long term relationship of over 2-3 years. love is a fickle feeling and its often not actually based on love, can't make spur of the moment decisions to permanently scar yourself with that bitch's name.

I would never get a tattoo for a woman I supposedly love.
Fact is, someday she's gonna be old and fat just as I'm going to be, and at that time I'm gonna be on the hunt for college ass again.

it's pretty simple...
... Tatoos are fine. they are even great depending on the tatoo.

i'd whip my wife halfway to the other side oft he universe if she tatood my name on her self.
(her other tatoos though were a gift from me :P )

Re: Tattoos - the relationship breaker
The only time I'd consider getting names tattooed on me are for close friends who have died or kids. Maybe if I was married to someone for 20 years I'd consider it, but otherwise, no. People who get a girlfriend or a boyfriends name tattooed on them are fucking idiots.

Re: Tattoos - the relationship breaker
there was a married with children episode about this. someone got "peggy" tattooed on his arm while he was in high school but she left him, so he had to find someone else named peggy. and the only peggy he could find was some mammoth beast.
so don't get names tattooed to your arm.

I find tattoos to be a huge turn off as it is, and if it was a tattoo of my name I would not only be turned off but creeped out as well.

Sums it up pretty well, only tattoo the names of dead people and close family on your body. Doing it for other people shows a complete lack of foresight.

when it comes to jumping into a commitment people can never seem to handle themselves properly. i don't think it necessarily has to do with the tattoo, i think it has to do with the realization that a long term commitment is a head of them..and they basically weaken at the thought of that. they begin to really consider if this is truly the person they should be with, and then they begin to feel bad about not taking such a huge plunge into commitment as their significant other did. it is an endless cycle
basically...it isn't smart. that shit doesn't come off.

I don't see why that's any different. Everyone will die someday anyway. How about In Future Memory? It doesn't make a difference, just because they're dead. If you really need to remember them maybe go buy some post-it notes or something.

All I'm saying is I'm not gonna rag on someone for a Rest in Peace in tattoo. It usually means the person died young and if that's how they want to pay respect to the dead, by all means they can go for it. I will however gladly make fun of the guy who gets Michelle tattooed across his neck because she was the first girl to blow him. Ya dig?

I have a friend who has "Your name" tattooed on her ass in really fancy cursive writing. The first day she got it she went up to everyone all like "Hey man, I just got your name tattooed on my ass!" and lulz ensued.

Everyone as in everyone she knows, I assume. Going up to random strangers saying that falls somewhere between tease and bitch.

steve-o must have been the creator of this idea. It's not as if this joke has been around for as long as tattoos.

Re: Tattoos - the relationship breaker
If it were someone special (ie. I truly love, changed me in a positive way) I might get a tattoo that reminds me of them. Probably not words. Like a symbol or picture that I also like. But again, they'd have to be really special.

Yes which is why that whole section was nested within brackets noting that it was the too long/didn't read section. That means that a person can get the gist of the conversation by just reading the sentences before and after that section. So... do you know what tl/dr means?
