finding shrooms in Australia
Finding Shrooms in Australia, specifically Victoria.
Where do they grow? What do they look like?
Telltale signs there poisonous..?
I was thinking this but tell me if its a bad idea
So, i go out at like.. 6 AM with a bag one bag, and put all the mushrooms i find in it take them home identify them..?
Is there any issues with doing that?
Thanks
Naffy

Re: finding shrooms in Australia
There are many different kinds of mushrooms, and they can be found in many places. For that reason, I suggest getting a fieldbook.

Re: finding shrooms in Australia
it's kinda late in the season, but if you have cow pastures over there that's a good place to look. and 2 things: they should bruise blue and have a purple spore print. once you do that, you could closely compare to similar types... ya gotta be careful though.

Our season is very short early May to end of June (we're having a drought), in our state they don't grow in cow paddocks. They grow on wood chips and pine needles, yes they bruise blue, no you don't need a spore print.
There is NO deadly look alikes (let alone safe look alikes). If you've found one, you can never mistake it again.

and yeah you don't need a spore print, but in areas with poisonous look - a likes it can help narrow it down.

Haha yes definitely. It also depends what type of mushroom he goes for as there ARE some that do have look alikes, how ever the main one I'm describing doesn't.
So op, take Penguins advice and spore print your mushrooms if they don't bruise blue.

Re: finding shrooms in Australia
what species you usu. find over there?
cubes, cyanescens, semilanceata, the genus panaeolus ect.?
generally they 'should' bruise blue if they contain psilocin as a result of it being oxidized...

That is a bad way to judge it. other non psilocybe mushrooms can bruise blue.
What you need to do is find someone experienced with mushroom identification and go out hunting with them.

Re: finding shrooms in Australia
As far as I know, the only non-psilocybin mushroom that bruisis blue, is a bolete, which has a sponge instead of gills. Just look around cow paddocks, and eucalyptus trees.

Well a good friend of mine in NSW claims that P. Cubensis does in fact grow in cow paddocks. Just have a scout around, although its probably a bit late in the season to find much.

Re: finding shrooms in Australia
There are other hunters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBKTHY8X220)out there as well.
Be careful and good luck.
You should look for some exotics:
P. Subaeruginosa (http://forums.mycotopia.net/exotic-magic-mushrooms/11376-psilocybe-subaeruginosa.html)
Panaeolus Cyanescens (http://forums.mycotopia.net/exotic-magic-mushrooms/5039-panaeolus-cyanescens-merged.html)
The Cyanescens are more potent than Cubensis. I'm not too sure about Subaeruginosa.
You'll find them in wooded areas.
Here is another book. (http://www.erowid.org/library/books_online/magic_mushrooms_aunz/magic_mushrooms_aunz6.shtml)

Cemetaries.
I have found bulk amounts of small subcubs growing all over well-manicured cemetaries.

Haven't been for a while but next time I go I will. But yeah, pretty much, you can usually spot them easily - The gardeners will get rid of the very obvious ones growing out in the middle of the lawns, so look for the edges where the lawns meet dirt or bushes and just follow them along until you see little golden nipples sprouting up. Test for bruising, reagent test and then harvest.

explain the last sentence, and provide pics.
Is there already an official AUS Shrooms thread?
We could make this into it, including generalized areas and what to look for, and we could get some shroom identifiers..
and NOT tell everyone spots so we dont have lots of people knowing good spots.
Possible idea? Post thoughts.

Shrooms grow abundantly in my area (Regional Adelaide), they often grow in my back-yard and surrounding areas.
Not sure about other states/locations.

Re: finding shrooms in Australia
In Victoria, mushrooms do not grow in cow dung.
Most common areas are landscaped garden beads. Tan bark once it's gone gray, lawns, etc.
The place where they grow most is in the forest, on natural mulch you'll find them, but THE BEST PLACE is Pine Forests. They're abundant, impossible to identify incorrectly, and potent as hell. Look for places where there'd be a lot of rain, but they're slightly covered. Like behind a tree, around fallen trees, etc.
In pineneedles they should have a thing, long stalk that's solid (not hollow), with a flat top as an adult and a dome when young. They bruise blue, and are usually already bruised. The top should be light tan/brown with a little 'nipple'.
Cut them off at ground level, don't rip them out. Leave the wee babies, so there will be more when you get back. People think that if you give a mushroom a good flick before hitting it some of it's spores fall out (thus more shrooms next rain). If it's true or not, it can't hurt to give it a little flick.

Sure, why not (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-38.348388,146.250687&spn=0.053447,0.11055&t=h&z=13)
See all those neat little forests? They're pine plantations. Go about three days after a heavy rain in May. That's not my patch (mine owns the fuck out of those), but I have picked them there before and you could easily fill a garbage bag in a day.

Yes and no.
Lots of people go motorbike riding around there, I have heard of police riding KTM 525's, but you'd hear one from a LONG way away.
