Thumbs up hacking my sansa mp3 to work on mac?

Just got a 2GB sansa "clip" mp3 player on woot for $20, and it's only compatible with windows. I initially thought I'd just update of friend's comps when I bought it [luckily he's got good music too], but I figured I'd ask here if there was any way to get it to update of my mac. Obviously a long shot, but definitely worth asking. Ideas?
Oh- running OSX 10.3.9

And TheDoc- Made $75 blowing leaves sunday, I'll be ordering RAM soon!

Okay here we go.
I did some searching for you, and while some of the information is a dated (like a year or so old), it should prove useful.

First, I found this: http:../../www.daniweb.com/forums/thread86070.html
In post #6, the user shows how to connect your Sansa to your Mac.
Quote:
"For those of you trying to find out how to make your e250 or other sansa mp3 players work on your mac os x (10.3.9) just follow these easy instructions.
Before connecting to your computer, switch the USB mode to MTP.
Now connect to your computer ( it will do Nothing).
Now disconnect the mp3 player(just unplug it).
Now change it to MSC mode.
Now connect it and bualla, it works!!!"
Second, I found what all this MSC and MTP stuff means, and how to switch between them:

"Firstly, lets explain MSC mode and MTP mode a bit.

MSC stands for Mass Storage Class. When your player is in this mode, the computer will see it the same way it would see a flash drive, as a removable disk. It will assign it the first available drive letter, as well as one for the memory card (if applicable). This is probably the more popular of the 2 modes, and is a more "open source" type of standard. Most comptuers detect the player in this mode without a problem.

MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol. It is a Microsoft standard and is Microsofts solution to connecting digital players and cameras to a window based platform. MTP mode must be used in order to transfer ANY Digital Rights Managment (DRM) protected content. Services like Rhapsody and Napster will only function in this MTP mode.

SanDisk has provided both of these modes at the users options on MOST of the entire Sansa Line mp3 players. The c200, and The View, do not have these 2 options in every version of firmware. Instead those players use an "Auto Detect" function that is suppose to Automaticly use MTP mode. If MTP mode does not work for any reason, it should default to MSC mode.

Switching between MSC and MTP modes

* Turn the Sansa on, if it is not already
* Navigate to the main menu of the player; this is the same menu that gives us options such as Play, Record, Info, etc...
* Navigate to "Settings" on the main menu of the player.
* After navigating to "Settings", we should see an option that states "USB" or "USB MODE"
* From here we can select MSC or MTP modes (could vary based on player model)
* Highlight the desired mode and select it, at this point it will roll back to the 'Settings' menu
* Connect the player to the computer and verify it is connecting in the desired mode.

It should be noted, when a device is in MSC mode, it will appear as a "Removable disk". When connected in MTP mode, it will show up as an "Audio Device".
Third, I found that there might be a way to sync your iTunes library/playlists/podcasts with your Sansa.
For more info, you can read this thread: http:../../lodist.com/showthread.php@t=83

Lastly, there is a Sansa forum for Mac + Linux users: http:../../lodist.com/forumdisplay.php@f=13

Hope it helps.

Peace.

Thumbs up Re: hacking my sansa mp3 to work on mac?

I just plugged in my sansa to charge it so I could change the settings, and it magically connected and popped up like a flash drive [msc mode I suppose?]. I'm downloading music into the "music" folder right now, I'll update soon whether it worked.

Thanks for all the help though, if this doesn't work out I'll have an excellent plan to fall back on. You should be a mod or something...http:image...es/redface.gif

Cool
As long as they are standard mp3 files, they should play flawlessly.
Kinda jealous; I have this 1GB Chinese player that sucks (low volume) and plays SMV video (15fps max- ).

Peace.
