Default Controlling much?

He deleted every guy friend from my phone (there were 2)

He deleted every picture of any friends I had on my computer

He goes through my text messages

He read my recent diary

He read my diary from when I was in the mental hospital

He used to read all my totse posts. Wouldn't be shocked if he still does

Do a lot of guys do this or am I spiraling into a life of control and abuse?

Uhhh it sounds like it.

From what I see from LOTS of military guys, they're VERY controlling. I see this a lot; lots of my friends are military. Most in fact.

Yeah, that makes sense. The army did change him. I guess I can understand though. There are so many fucking whores here. The women I've met here are filth. Cheating, lying whores. Maybe he just thinks I'll become one too. I've never cheated on anyone and I never will. It's not fair seeing as I've never done anything like that.

That's fucked up how long have you been dating him? Just because he was in the military doesn't give him an excuse to go through all your personal shit, jesus christ. I bet he's been cheated on before and that's why he's like that.

I was being serious. Bad idea to get involved with someone so insecure. I've never even heard of that happening before. Sure a lot of guys don't like it when their girl has male friends, but actually deleting their numbers and pictures in an attempt to remove them from your life is ridiculous.

It shows not only how insecure and immature he is, but also how stupid he is. If you're friends with someone deleting their number won't sever the friendship.

It's wierd. I get along better with guys than I do girls. He gets along better with girls. I'm cool with the fact he has a lot of girl friends because i can understand what it's like to not be able to get along with the same sex very well.

I've also been cheated on more than once. I don't know if he has. If so we deal with it in completely different ways. I simply choose to cut those people out of my life and vow to myself to never cheat on anyone. Plus I'm not interested. I find very few people attractive and I can't see myself with anyone other than him.

I try to talk to him about it but I never get any real answers. I brought it up maybe 15 minutes ago and he didn't say much. When he was tired of listening to me complain he just went and took a shower.

Ay...

You may think it's tolerable now but it can only get worse. Have a talk with him and try to fix the problem before twenty years pass out of nowhere and he's an abusive raging alcoholic and your living on a military base with a bunch of little shits running around fantasizing about driving off a cliff.

Ya dig?

Maybe you should write in your diary, "if your reading this then we are broken up".

Yeah, srsly. This is how A bitches get accustomed to getting the shit beat out of them and B end up dead sometimes if they piss their man off enough. You might not think it's in him now, but just wait. Girls don't just all of a sudden start getting the shit beaten out of them one day and accept it; it takes small acceptances at a time to get to the point where you'll take getting your ass beat if you piss your man off. True story; I had an uncle in the military that slit his wife's throat and dumped her body in a river. He got executed this year.

Wow you're right on pointe. I'm glad you're not just jumping to the end. I'm willing to work for us to be okay. Made me smile a little but I do see the harsh reality in that. It's probably my worst nightmare.

I feel like maybe I haven't been talking to him correctly. I've mostly just listed the things he does that pisses me off to him but it doesn't seem to get through.

Use questions, they're pretty good. People can just deny what you're saying or ignore it or brush things off, questions demand something from them. Ask things like "well do you think what you're doing is reasonable?" and "How would you feel if I went through all your stuff?" and "Why do you want to anyway?" and "Don't you trust me?". You should also ask if he was horribly cheated on or something.

As a side note, even if he hasn't seen any fighting directly, I would never ever date someone whose job had to do with killing people.

Good call. Your boyfriend does seem a bit controlling, even bordering on the obsessive controlling. You had better head this off fast because if you enjoy talking to people other than your boyfriend and other women than you will start to resent what he's doing. And from there it's a slippery slope...

I suggest you set some ground rules, how did you react when he started invading your privacy? I imagine he would be fucking pissed if you started tinkering with his personal space. Try to express this to him. The fact that your willing to work for your relationship shows that there is in fact hope. The military can indeed fuck with your mind, in fact that's pretty much a given. Sounds like he is always on the offense, your not the enemy. Assert yourself, girl.

As a side note, even if he hasn't seen any fighting directly, I would never ever date someone whose job had to do with killing people.

That eliminates quite a bit of genitals. I only have the no law enforcement policy in my love life.

Or, if he's still reading your Totse posts, he already knows and will either back off, or beat you to death for sneaking around and talking about him behind his back to random people on the internet.

So we still haven't talked much yet on the issue. I'm going to wait until he gets home from work because he'll just be grouchy if I try talking to him before he goes in. I'm going to ask questions like someone mentioned here. Maybe like:

Why do you feel the need to go through my personal things?/ What made you start doing that in the first place?
How would you feel if I did that to you? Wouldn't you begin to think I don't trust you at all?
How could this possibly work out if you just want to control me?
Do you think I would do anything to break your trust/suspect me of doing something?

I also read this article in a magazine about dangerous guys. They're really nice at first and then they just fly off the handle one day. Most of it's caused by jealousy. He truly does seem harmless to me but apparently that's how it goes so I need to figure out something fast.

I really hope he does read this. It would really help him see how freakish other people find his behavior. It would save me a lot of talking.

And video tape yourself fucking some other guy, then give it to your boyfriend and run away.

There is trust here. I trust him and that's about it :( I don't plan on having kids for another year or 2 (at the VERY least)

Tell me about the mental hospital.

It was a very entertaining experience. Most of the girls there were emo chicks trying to get attention. I saw so many tits. Few were completely nuts. The only guys there (like 3) were there for anger problems and came directly from the hospital/police office. I didn't belong there at all.

This is definitely precursory to abusive behavior. Get out now before there are some poor kids brought unwillingly into this horrible situation.

People like this will say whatever you want to hear to get you to stay. You can talk to him and you guys will fight or not fight and he will "oh baby I'll change.... etc etc"

But this type of behavior when it is engrained into someone, they are fucked for life, sorry. Controlling assholes are controlling assholes and your best bet it so to cut your losses, call this a lesson learned and try and salvage what's left of your life while you still have a lot to salvage.

Don't wait till he cuts you off from more friends, invades more of your privacy, violates your sense of self worth further, makes you feel like even less of a person who deserves even fewer personal freedoms.

You are a beautiful beautiful and seemingly intelligent girl. You really need to just get the hell away from this weirdo.

Unfortunately, the reality is that most women who wind up in these situations subconsciously seek them out, I would suggest counseling for yourself to maybe investigate that, as well.

Good luck

From an equity standpoint you're losing out majorely.

He gets to keep female friends and yet don't get any male friends, show him that two can play the trust game.

Make him understand what you're going through, if he can't, you shouldn't be with him.

Um... Sweetie, if he were harmless he wouldn't have that green hat.

I've met a few people in or formerly in his line of work and they tended to be either totally relaxed or total nutters... He doesn't sound too relaxed. Please keep in mind though that I don't know him, or by any means the majority of people in his profession. It could be that he's just having a minor freak out, or it could be he's a nutjob. The only girls I've known who dated military guys are so head over heels about the fact that they're in the military they wont break up with them for shit.

One chick started "dating" some guy right when he entered boot camp and posted pictures of him all over his myspace and how she was so patriotic for supporting him the day he comes back from boot camp he dumps her. I thought it was funny as hell.

But seriously who the fuck would date someone like that.

Still imagine being in the military and having a hottie wife/girlfriend at home for months at a time by herself. I'd be worried about them not handling the time im away. Some guys would take it too far.

I'd get out of it, and i think if you try to get out of it he's going to go crazy. You might be too wishy washy to even stand up for the right thing. He steps all over you and you don't care if he does, he owns you.

We just got done talking for a really long time. Basically he says he doesn't trust other people with me. I pretty much told him he'll have to get over this kind of behavior 1 if he wants this to work out and 2 he's going to Afganistan and he won't be able to watch me at all times. He says he'd never lay a finger on me but I had to let him know that abuse doesn't have to be physical.

I don't want this to get worse and most of me believes it won't. I know we'll always have some fights but it can't stay like this. I can't see myself with anyone else. It has nothing to do with me wanting to cling on to the military lifestlye. Quite frankly, it's not that great. I just hope he opens up to me more instead of being secretive and going through my stuff. I don't know how much more of that I can take.

I can only hope for the best I guess. I fell in love with him before he joined the army. I never saw him as the military kind of guy, but to him it was a way to make something of himself and get out of Indiana.

How did you end up there then? I won't judge you.

This is essentially what I was going to post.

He doesn't want to lose you. He's going to be away from you for long periods of time, so he's afraid that if you're around other guys when he's gone, you'll get with them. A lot of guys will fuck girls when they feel vulnerable, so it's a valid fear. He probably feels that by exerting his control over you that you'll remain faithful to him while he's away.

Unfortunately, his behavior has crossed boundaries. It's unacceptable to act out of jealousy and go on the rampage. He's in the military, which makes this worse because he can do a lot of physical damage, and he's programmed to follow the chain of command. You're below him on that chain of command, so you're supposed to follow his orders.

Read Othello if you want to see what happens when military personnel get jealous and do stupid shit. The tl/dr version of the story is murder/suicide. We can thank Shakespeare for that lovely totse meme.

You can't change him. You can't make him not be jealous. Jealousy is a cancer that will keep growing until it kills you. "The poison tree" by Blake is an example of anger growing out of control:
I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe;
I told it not, my wrath did grow.
And I water'd it in fears,
Night & morning with my tears;
And I sunned it with my smiles
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright;
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine,

And into my garden stole
When the night had veil'd the pole:
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretch'd beneath the tree

Your best bet is to see if he'll calm down and leave you your personal space. Marriage is a negotiation. You should've dealt with this earlier on, but now is the time to do it before he leaves. Marriage is something you work on your whole life. It's the vow to stay with the person, love him/her, take care of him/her, and deal with life's issues together. So go deal with this issue together.

That's really all I want to do. He seemed a bit more uppity than he usually does after we talked. I hope this means I got through to him.

Basically I asked him everything I said I would and more. For once he didn't really make excuses. I had him read the article (it was called "When love turns lethal" or something). He told me he was kind of insulted that I would think he'd physically harm me. I had to explain that I wanted him to focus on the precursors to that sort of behavior and that abuse is not always physical.

One thing that bothers me is when he says he's always had a problem trusting people. Well, to me that's just a bad defense mechanism/excuse (so there was one excuse today).

He loves you so much its causing him to FEAR losing you, he also sees the stupid shit you do and he's scared for you.

He's mentally become a husband but he's fucking up. Its very very common among young men.

You however are still thinking in terms of 'personal space', in terms of 'privacy', in terms of 'rights'. Those have no place in a marriage.

How would that make her still "mentally a girlfriend"? How does her husbands fear of loss reflect her mentality towards the marriage?

Ya, because keeping a diary is proof that you're not committed to your marriage. And having other guys phone numbers?!? Fuck that. Theres no space for phone numbers in a marriage.

And personal space doesn't have a place in marriage? Are you seriously retarded? Do you take a shit with your wife watching? Are you not allowed to go out with the boys/girls once your married?

Fucking stupid...

Nope, but when my wife was too ill to move I'd sit her in the bath and wash the shit off her and when I lost control of my bowels during the DT's she helped me clean up.

Thats different. If shes sick its obviously not what I was talking about. Are you seriously saying there is no room for personal space within a marriage?

No what I'm saying is that there is no such thing as a 'person' in marriage. Married people are no longer individuals but part of a couple.

Thats an oldfashioned concept , the bible expresses it best "and a man shall leave his parents and cleave to his wife and they shall become one flesh".

If my wife felt the need to share the bathroom while I took a dump then that'd be fine by me. However as I have a bowel condition and the smell of my own shit makes me want to puke I doubt she'll ever feel the need.

Well I guess my views on marriage are different. I see it, like you said, as the joining of two people into a couple. But I also see it in different terms. To me marriage means you have found the girl you want to spend the rest of your life with, and its a promise that you won't ever leave her. That doesn't mean all the personal aspects of your life suddenly vanish. Of course a lot of things do become merged, but I wouldn't say the lack of an individual identity is the defining aspect of a marriage.

Ex. Lets say I like meditation... or fishing... some personal hobby that you like to do alone. Can you suddenly no longer enjoy that hobby once your married simply because it doesn't incorporate the couple as a whole?

No actually just the opposite, it makes that hobby and those times without her even more enjoyable BUT it means that hobby is relegated in importance. It is no longer 'your life' (ie like "golf is my life!")

Jack hasn't got enough caffeine in his nicotine stream to explain it better at the moment.

So we still haven't talked much yet on the issue. I'm going to wait until he gets home from work because he'll just be grouchy if I try talking to him before he goes in. .

Dog, I'm going to give you some advice. I've given it here before and it usually upsets the more fem-nazi among us but it's the stone cold truth.

Never 'vomit' on him 5 minutes before he goes out or 10 minutes after he comes home!

Vomit=talk about serious matters, grizzle, whine or say anything aggressively.

Men are in many ways inferior to women. When a man comes home, comes in the door, he is still mentally in 'work mode'. It takes time for him to switch to 'home and husband' mode.

Let him get in the door, take his coat off, sit down. Swallow your pride and forget the years of fem-nazi conditioning and bring him a drink.

Chances are he'll then say something like "how was your day?". That's the phrase that tells you he is in 'home mode'. Then you can talk to him.

A naff little story to illustrate....

UGG got back to the cave just before the sun set, the deer drapped over his shoulder seemed to weigh more with each step he took and he knew that he was getting too old to hunt. Years ago , as a Smooth Chin, he'd been able to run for hours, at the front of the pack, chasing the mammoth to where it could killed easily.

Now just the walk home from the hunting ground left his legs and back aching. He wasn't happy with the new spear. It just didn't seem to fit in his hand the way the old one had but it had been a present from his Life-Mate, Uggina, so he'd keep on using it.

One of this seasons Smooth Chins had gotten himself killed this hunt. And that bothered Ugg. Shouldn't have happened. Perhaps there might be a better way of teaching the young ones?

He'd barely got to the mouth of the cave when Uggina started

"Oh thank the Earth Mother that you're home! The children are all ill- I think they ate some bad berries and your pet stegosaurus has shit all over our bed furs again! I've told you its unhygienic having it the cave but you won't listen. Oh and by the way my mother has had her cave painted and she wants us to go over and see... "

--------------------------------

How many times have you heard some cheater say "my wife doesn't understand me?". Well sure he might mean "she doesn't want to have anal sex" or he might mean "she doesn't understand my need to become coach of the junior baseball league" but chances are he just means he doesn't enjoy coming home.

You should totally write a book jack :)

I pretty much know when to not bother him, but that is good advice. Too bad I already had to learn the hard way -_-

I can understand not having personal space in a marriage. I'm not asking for space. He'll be taking a shower and I'll walk in and take a dump. We're pretty comfortable with each other. What I've been wanting to know is why I'm not allowed to have contact with my friends. I have a few girl friends but I have a few guy friends too. They're all back in VA. Ever since I moved to NC I pretty much have no one other than my husband. I know two women here. One is pregnant and I can't vent to her becuase she has enough stress of her own and doesn't care. The other one has morals I can't possibly agree with. I can talk to her but I would never get too into details.

When I want to talk about something that's been bothering me, I usually go to my husband. When it's my husband I need advice on, sure I can talk to but sometimes I like another opinion first. That's why I'm on totse :P Maybe if I had someone to talk to I probably wouldn't be on here so often.

I'm not sure I understand what stupid things I do. Sure I've done stupid things in the past. But so has he. I've always been a quiet person. I've never been to a nightclub and I don't like to just party. I'm afraid of older men, hell I'm afraid of damn near everything. Unless I'm with him, I avoid doing things that involve me being around too many people.

I was like that when I was in the service due to the fact that I've seen guys wives have another dude over before the bed got cold...

You need to tell him straight and firmly that that is NOT okay under any circumstances, and if he doesn't get that then I think you know it will only get worse. There is no point in a relationship/marriage without trust and that sort of behaviour is not trusting.
Gut instinct.
