It depends on how good of a friend the person is. Obviously you should never do that to your best friend you've known half your life. But if it's someone you've recently started hanging out with and you can see yourself valuing the relationship with the girl more than your one with the dude friend then go for it.

Personally, I think it depends on the GIRL about as much as the FRIEND, if the friend isn't that much of your best, then go ahead, only if the girl is hot, if not, fuck that. If she's hot, and the friend is ok closeness, still try with that shit, it might be worth it. But if they're extremely close to you, and the girl is hot, it shouldnt matter, the friend is worth more.

If you are dumped by your significant other and feel like shit for it, a friend shouldn't try getting in there. A friend would look out for a friend and ensure that no further hurt comes from their actions. For example, knocking about with the ex. If this rule is broken, that person is open to whatever you throw at them for mugging you off.

If you dump your significant other, they're free pickings for anyone including your friends. You gave it up and made that person free to do as they please. Leave them alone.

If it's done on mutual terms, again, free pickings. As long as your consent and agreement for splitting up is there, you have nothing to whine about.
