...yeah, but it wouldn't stop a bullet.
People who say this really piss me off. More so because they say it and then ooze a smug, self-important aura over everything, as if somehow, they are the best thing in the universe. An infallible god just waiting to prove you wrong again.
Of course, I'm talking about the classic hand-to-hand combat conversation.
This often comes up between groups of guys, usually after a few beers, and it's a good, light-hearted chin wag (that means chat). Some people think boxing is the best, some kick-boxing, others opt for more exotic methods like TKD, Krav Maga or even MMA. This carries on until some total douche pipes up:
Douche:
Yeah, but it couldn't stop a bullet from a gun, could it? *Acts as if has trumped the discussion*
Nice work, moron.
No, a martial art could not falter the firing mechanism of a gun. Not unless said martial art somehow incorporated a gunsmith course...
it really bothers me when people use this as a top trump. It's not the topic at hand you fucking idiot! It'd be like saying "Well, it's not as good as a rare steak, is it?" when you're discussing the best ice cream flavours. It's neither here nor there. Besides, how many people have you shot after they've punched you or before they were going to punch you? .
It's amazing how stupid people are.

Re: ...yeah, but it wouldn't stop a bullet.
Amusingly enough, Krav Maga gun disarms, as well as some Filipino disarms (I have not personally learned others) include jamming the weapon by locking a slide out of battery or keeping a hammer from falling... so, depending on how they phrase it, it could stop a bullet from a gun provided the firing pin hasn't hit the primer.
That said, using my CCW wouldn't likely stop a bullet exiting a gun either. It all tends to fall into the action-reaction cycle. If you act before someone can respond mentally and pull the trigger (assuming they don't want to just execute you where you stand), you can come out on top.

Anybody who's ever watched Buggs Bunny knows all you have to do is stick your finger in the end of the gun. You'd think you guys would know these things. Get a real education.

Shit yeah. That ninja chick in Sin City threw a spike in the end of the gun and stopped it. Also Al Giordino saved Dirk Pitt by sticking his pinky finger in a gun in an old Clive Cussler book.
Everybody knows this works, common knowledge.

Everybody knows this works, common knowledge. Also, you can reach way back and tap them on the shoulder, then when they twist their head around to check to see who it is, you can then turn the gun right around so the business end is pointing back at them, and then you tell them to go right ahead and shoot. Works almost every single time.

Um, duh. That's why I said it depends on how the question if phrased. If there are no spatial constraints, then one can place someone within 5 feet.
Also, if you're talking 30 yards away, unless they have a longarm, I doubt your average robber would be able to hit shit. Even then.... Do note that I practice martial arts and referred to practicing diligently with firearms, so I don't have a kung-fu master bias.

Exactly, all you have to do is dodge them like Neo does in The Matrix (or if you're really good like he is by the end of it, stop them in mind air with the power of your mind), then own their ass once the ammo runs out.

I'd be smiling while the shooter tried to figure out how he could miss at that range so many times. If I got even fancier, I could replace the bullets with blue, yellow and orange paint-pellets.

No no no.
I would simply turn the bullet around in mid air so that it hit the person who shot it. Much more fun.

bear with me on this
i think the reason for people using the gun argument is because they find that people who talk about "which martial art is teh coolest" to be retarded in the first place, and possibly discussed by wannabes (not all, but a lot are) who believe said martial art to be unstoppable. as a result they just use the gun argument to troll them or something
lol i dunno

People mean knwoing a martial art won't stop a bullet from entering you if you were shot.
