Addicted to tobacco
I know tobacco isn't really a drug but this seems like the only place to put this thread.
Basically, I smoke cigarettes and I really, really want to quit, but just can't. I can't even go a day. When I'm trying to quit and just sitting around with mates I just can't help but not have a few... or 10.
For anyone who has quit cigarettes, what's the best method? I'm not going to try patches or any of that bullshit, I want to do it myself. What makes it even harder is everyone who I chill with smokes, so I'm around the shit all the time.

Re: Addicted to tobacco
Buy a can of dip and everytime you want a cig throw a good sized dip in you can eventually gradually come off of it if you slowly make your dips smaller

Re: Addicted to tobacco
to quit tobacco i recommend this process-
1. begin doing a half gram of heroin a day for about 8-12 months.
2. ween yourself down to a quarter gram and do that for about a month.
3. quit cold turkey after that and suffer through your 3-5 days of withdrawls, no sleep, cold sweating and what you regard as hell on earth
4. once you realize how terrible but temporary that was you will easily quit smoking cigarettes.
good luck and god speed

Re: Addicted to tobacco
Either stop being a pussy with no will power, or chew tobacco. Some of my friends quit that way, go get a couple tins of dip, and every time you get a craving throw in a pinch. It will burn the first times you do it but after a while it feels good.
It won't feel as good as a smoke, but its better than a nicotine patch.
E: How long have you been smoking daily for?

Re: Addicted to tobacco
^ plus the difference between smoking a cig and dippin is like the difference between hydrocodone and heroin. dip fucks me up to the point of puking when i do it simply because i have probably smoked 20 cigarettes in my 20 years of living.

Re: Addicted to tobacco
I've been smoking for a few years, from 1 - 2 a day. But the last 8 months I'd say 10 - 15 a day. My group of friends is basically us sitting around in a house smoking pot, playing guitar hero, eating... and smoking cigarettes. It has became such a routine that if I don't smoke I don't feel right.
Btw, I think it is a physical addiction. It's not unbearable, but it's to the point where I get so pissed off and feel so jittery that I think "fuck it, just one more to calm me down."

Re: Addicted to tobacco
8 months of that will have some physical side effects, but realize that someone is not fully addicted to cigs until about 2 years in (your 8 months in). If your really struggling to quit now realize it may be impossible in a few years.

That analogy only applies to non smokers. To a smoker its more like dip is like smoking/snorting heroin, and smoking is IVing it.

its because smoking is just so casual and socially acceptable. You can't walk up to a group of everyday joes and casually IV dope without getting some odd looks.
You can also carry on with a perfectly normal life when you smoke, which isn't really true for dope.

Re: Addicted to tobacco
Don't get me wrong, I like smoking. I like smoking when drinking, I like smoking in a social setting. I know though in a few years that when I'm dying from lung cancer or emphysema that I'll regret it.

Re: Addicted to tobacco
I LOVE to smoke. Dip doesn't do it for me. The nicotine craving can be supressed with a Nicorette, but I love blowing smoke, and having something to do while driving.
i'm quitting today though.. haha.
smoked my last 1, i have 2 cigars in case i need to cheat, and 100 nicorettes.

Re: Addicted to tobacco
its alot of habit and oral fixation.....
nicotine withdrawals aren't really that bad, yea your going to feel like shit for a few days and crave cigarettes but it does get easier...
some people deal with the oral fixation by chewing gum, some people try and kill 2 birds with one stone and use nicotine chewing gum.....
but it does take quite a bit of willpower

Re: Addicted to tobacco
Sounds like you have more of a willpower problem.
If you really wanna quit use the patch. The fact that you can have a heart attack if you smoke while on it should be enough to not smoke. It should kill 90% of your cravings, just see it through. I used it for a month and it worked wonders. I stopped with a few weeks to go, not because I got cravings, just because I didn't feel like quiting.
You have to WANT to quit to get results. When you're with your friends and you think about giving in you don't HAVE to have that smoke, you just want to. No one's forcing you to light up.
Do yourself a favor and don't ever form an opiate or benzo habit.

Re: Addicted to tobacco
Dip is a good idea. I've used snus to quit short-term and it worked pretty well too.
Also, you could try weed. One of the times after I quit cigarettes and started back again (sadly), I only wanted to smoke on certain days. Which days? The days I wasn't smoking weed.
If I've got some good herb, I have no interest in shitty-ass tobacco.

Re: Addicted to tobacco
You just need an alternative to the nicotine.....ever tried THC(marijuana for those with impaired brain function)? The cops wont look too highly(unless they get some :)), but im sure it will fix you...
Or just play chicken with cars on the fwy. Adrenalin will keep you from thinking about smoking.

Re: Addicted to tobacco
Hey man, the first step is having the will to stop (so well done). I've not smoked in 7 weeks now and i simply decided how many i was going to smoke when i woke up and put that amount into a pack. Every week i'd reduce it by 1. I'm not saying it's easy, you'll need a little will power, but that's how i did it. Good luck :)

Re: Addicted to tobacco
Just start smoking pipe tobacco... in a pipe. It takes away the nicotine rush, is more relaxing, and allows for a longer period of time before you crave more. Since it takes a little longer for the nicotine to reach your brain you don't associate smoking the pipe with getting a nicotine fix you can just put the pipe away and wait until the time is right until you just forget about it.
