The Revised Cold water Extraction with some Chemistry

Chemicals:
1. Tylenol 3 (300mg APAP/ 30mg Codeine)
2. Methanol (concentrated 99.8%)
3. 0.1 N NaOH
4. D.I. Water
5. Diethyl Ether

Equipment:
1. Crushing Device (Mortar & Pestle )
2. Glass cups (Beakers preferable)
3. Vacuum pump (may not be necessary if you have the time to wait)
4. Squirt bottle
5. Filter papers (Coffee filters ok, Whatman #42 preferable , # 4 backup)
6. pH papers



Process:
A. Removing the Filler!
1. Cush 10 -20 tablets into fine powder with mortar & pestle and place in a sealable container.
2. Add 50 ml Methanol to powder and seal container. Shake for 5 minutes.
3. Using a squirt bottle filled with Methanol rinse down inside of container. Prepare vacuum filtration or standard filtration setup.
4. As the vacuum is running pour contents of container through filtration device (using Whatman paper). Be sure to rinse container and wash the precipitate a few times with Methanol.
5. Discard solids and keep liquid.


B. Separating the Goods!
1. Take the filtrate made in Part A. and let sit in a long shallow glass dish in a dark area with a fan blowing near (not over) it. If you have access to a vacuum hood, USE IT!!!
2. After several hours of drying white crystals should form, this is the APAP/Codeine. These next steps are for those with access to Diethyl Ether and 0.1 N NaOH. If you do not have access to these chemicals, go get a lab job, order them online, or just do the Cold Water Extraction from this point on. Should help in with yield.
3. Using D.I. water dilute crystals into a water solution, then add enough NaOH to make very basic, test with pH papers to litmus of 9.0.
4. Take the liquid and add it to a separatory funnel (or a zip-top bag, although I’m not sure how the plastic will react with Diethyl Ether.) Mix in 50 ml Diethyl Ether, stopper and shake like hell (letting the gas out every ten seconds).
5. Separate out solvent layer, this has the codeine free base and not the APAP which has been converted as well into sodium acetaminophen oxide. This is not soluble in Diethyl Ether.
6. Let the solvent evaporate or use a vacuum/fan to help it along.
7. You now have your Codeine base. Enjoy!!!
8. You can squirt some lemon/orange juice in and mix it up to help with the taste.
Be sure the check back soon, I will try to write out a simple conversion from codeine to morphine. Then from morphine to heroin for you real adventurers. Peace out!

i might be wrong but isn't codeine polar? given that it dissolves pretty well in water

methanol is a non polar solvent if memory serves...

methanol should not disolve codeine....

just when I thought it wasn't possible...
that would mean any a/b using naoh on any opiate would produce clean opiates, right?
codeine freebase is soluble in water, but would be more soluble in the np layer, thus going over to it...

I am really no chemist and I want to know more about this extraction, let more people see it.

You see, I have a girlfriend who was in a car accident, she has been taken off opiates but her dad still gets her OTC codeine (we live in canada)

I watch her eat like 8 of these in a morning/afternoon because she has a tolerance and needs more for the old effect.

She often has stomach problems the day after this (I would say her liver is just trying to kick its way out her tummy!!!

I want to be able to take a bottle of these pills, condense it into a say, 20-30 pure codeine pills so that she doesnt have to eat all that fucking APAP.

I am also going to order her some kava and kratom so she can try those out.

for that a reg. cwe would work, as you wouldn't get more than 250mg apap per 100mL water, and that's an insignificant amount, so why go through the trouble? cleaning further than this would really only be necessary for non-oral uses of it.
