I am trying to get some files on my server but every time I use wget command it just dls the html or xml but not the file. Is there something else I should be using? BTW its all done through command line.

http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/
wget has absolutely nothing to do with Linux or any other Unix/Unix-like system.
If you want to download something from *your server*, you can also use a web browser, you know.

What file are you trying to get?
What is the command you are using exactly?

Use lynx, w3m or links.
You can also use links -g, if graphical support is compiled.
I prefer curl to wget, anyways.

I hate to burst your bubble, you are just unfamiliar with wget.. as anyone can tell. WinSCP is not a Linux application.. also Linux has scp, it is secure copy. It is part of the OpenSSH software suite.

I'm not sure if you read the name of the thread but I'm perfectly aware that I'm not familiar with anything Linux

Sounds like you're wgetting the wrong url. You want to wget http://url/src/file.extension, not http://url/page.html.
