Default A pet peeve of mine.

So I am in the Army. And ever since i was issued my first M16 in basic training, they drilled into our minds that it is not a GUN, it is a WEAPON. The only "guns" in the army are howitzers. And me being a redleg, calling howitzers weapons is also a no-go.

So now everytime someone calls a small arm a "gun" it just annoys the shit out of me. I think it makes sence, you know? I don't really care about it on this board because I did call weapons guns before I joined, and I realize that not everyone is in the military, or they just don't care. Just wanted to know if anyone looks at it the same way I do?

Whats everyones pet peeves when it comes to guns/weapons?

You need to chill out and break your programming.

I was like that before I joined, now someone says "gun" or "clip" when they mean magazine I just don't care. I know what they mean. Nitpicky correcting behavior regarding insignificant matters is something that assholes do.

There's a lot of dipshits out there who don't know what the fuck they're talking about, but keep running at the mouth just to try to act cool.

Whatever man just ignore it there's better things in life to waste time on. I know it's annoying but so are the assholes who cut me off when I'm driving, I want to crash into them and smash their heads in but I know it won't resolve anything.

If anything at least it's a good indicator for your idiot-radar.

People who say things like "AVTOMAT KALASHNIKOVA 1947 CAN BE DROPPED OUT OF HELICOPTERS AND INTO THE MUD AND STILL WORK BETTER THAN THE M16 EVER WILL" really make me want to cockslap them.

Also people who say "clip" when they mean magazine.

Additionally, the overuse of the words "tactical," "mil-spec," "military style," and "assault".

Yesterday i heard that hunting rifles were designed with iron sights so they couldn't use a scope, and that sniper rifles were the ones with scopes(thus, any gun with a scope is a sniper rifle). many lulz.

The obvious "clip" and "magazine" mix-ups. I used to be one of these dipshits, and as soon as I learned better - goddamn, does it annoy me.

Also, the term "assault weapon," especially when used by a gun owner - you're just furthering the propaganda!

A magazine is encased. A clip, or stripper clip, is a device that loads rounds into a magazine.

The refusal to call a small arm a gun is purely a military thing. It has no real basis in linguistics or history, but is just another part of your programming.

Small arms began as portable artillery. Shouldered cannons. Given that lineage, I don't see how it is inappropriate to call them guns. The 21-gun salute, initially a function of cannons, is now carried out with rifles. By the military. Figure that one out.

Some people seem to think that "pistol" refers almost exclusively to auto-loading handguns, yet the term was applied to revolvers for decades before auto-loaders arrived at the turn of the 20th century.

What's the difference between a boat and a ship? A hill and a mountain? These distinctions are vague at best. The magazine/clip question, on the other hand, is very clear. Or was, at least, before certain people of authority [I'm looking at you, Ruger] started using the terms interchangeably.

Then we have the M1 Garand clips, they are a wee bit diffrent than stripperclips (the previous picture) as they stay in the weapons internal magasine until all 8 shots have been fired, and then they spring out... That's why the M1 Garand has the distinct *BANG**BANG**BANG**PLING* thingy.

Thats a true clip, also known as a en bloc clip, most clips are really chargers, not clips.

Yeah, "Assault" is a verb, not an adjective. The weapon doesn't assault a tight group of invading russian paratroopers, you do.

Except in soviet russia. Weapon assaults YOU.

I have a gun.

I wear a hat.

I wear camo.

That whole "weapon" thing is gay. lack of specifics- yet another reason why the US Army is a giant digital circus.

And a magazine is a magazine, a clip is a clip.

The term clip came into common usage to refer to a magazine in WWII when soldiers were issued clips for their M1 Garands and magazines for their other weapons. It is still a term in common usage. If you don't like it you are un-American, and you should go burn in hell with all the Nazis, Mormons, and Obamites.

Clip, clip, mother fucking clip. That was the Greatest Generation you commie fucks. How dare you disrespect them with your nit picking bullshit.

Actually, because those troops had a clue as to the differences, calling clips and magazines by improper terminology is an affront to their having served.

Maybe they over bred in his area this year and needed a little thinning out? :D

The clip/magazine thing bugs me a little, one good thing about having an old mil surp is that you can teach new shooters the difference between and clip and mag from day one.

Default Re: A pet peeve of mine.

Calling magazines clips (and vice versa) gets me going. Calling a suppressor a "silencer" just flat out pisses me off, and I physically demonstrate the anger.

I hate it when people don't designate which variant or model of a firearm they're talking about, or simply name the size of the cartridge it's chambered for. A ".45" is not the same as a Colt M1911A1. An "AK" is not the same thing as an AK-47.

It REALLY pisses me off when people think they know about a firearm because they know what it's chambered for, especially when they use the word "silencer" and/or call a magazine a clip while they're talking about the firearm. Or when they ask what the term "chambered" means, and then try and show off by stating that the AK-47 fires a 7.62mm bullet, but don't know the length of the cartridge.

People who call any rifle that looks like a Kalashnikov variant, or any rifle they do not know the name of an AK-47. A Ruger 10/22 with a Krinkov conversion kit is not a damn AK-47.

People who believe that the M16 series of rifles is superior to all other assault rifles. I just don't like those people, primarily because they often can't tell you the difference between the AR-15 variants, and refer to them simply as "the M16."

People who believe the Kalashnikov series of rifles is superior to all other assault rifles. I just don't like those people, primarily because they often don't know that the AK-74 exists, along with the AK-100 series, and can't properly designate the rifles. I can tell you why I would take an AK-47S over any other fully automatic rifle, but I'm not going to say it's the best by any means. And it probably can survive being dropped out of a helicopter and into a pool of mud. The easiest ways to stop an AK-47 variant from firing is to put the safety on, remove the magazine, fill it with cement, or run over it with a tank.

People who say that Glock pistols are the most accurate, powerful, and durable semi automatic handguns available. Also, when people use the word "Glock" to talk about a Glock pistol, but don't specify WHICH Glock pistol.

People who wave guns around.

People who say the AR-15 is a "civilian M16."

When people fail to realise that a 5.56mm bullet is .003mm larger than the width of a .22LR bullet, or when they fail to realise that a 5.45mm has more killing power than a 5.56mm, and/or that the 7.62mm bullet is better for neutralizing cinder blocks than people.

When people believe something about a firearm because they saw it in a video game.

I find a lot of the above mildly annoying as well, but I do take issue with the blanket statement about the 5.45 being a better round in fleshy targets than the 5.56. I understand it depends on loadings, but most of the published research from people like Fackler decried the more vanilla rounds as less viable for killing/incapacitating.
Opinions.

I shouldn't have said more killing power.
Combat effectiveness, yes.

It's VERY hard to repair the type of damage a tubing 5.45 bullet does to organs (and to a lesser extent, a 5.56), but it's not likely to kill them outright. So not only do you get that man out of the battle by wounding him, you also remove the soldier(s) taking that man out.

One or more rounds from a 7.62 will likely kill them, and the bodies will likely be left until victory for once side is achieved. So you have one man out of the fight. A hit from a 5.45 will remove 2, at the very least, unless the side with the wounded soldier wishes him to die.

Considering the weight differences, I could very likely carry 1.2 to 1.5 times as many 5.45x39mm cartridges as 5.56x45 or 7.62x39 cartridges.

People who say the AR-15 is a "civilian M16

Then how would you describe it?!

from wiki:

AR-15 was the original name for what became the militarily designated M16, the assault rifle first used by the U.S. in the Vietnam War. The name AR-15 is now used almost exclusively to refer to the semi-automatic (commercially available) civilian version(s) of the M16 and M4 assault rifles.
