Default Diagnosed ADHD -Now on strattera and it aint working...

Hey guys,

Recently got diagnosed ADHD and my shrink put me on this strattera stuff,
i been on it a week now and all it does is give me weird tingling rushes all through my body, which is really uncomfortable and it makes me really nausea too.

Should I keep taking the shit, as my doctor said it will take up to 3 weeks to start working... well it certainly does a a good job of making me feel like crap all day so far, and i'm more vague/inattentive than i was before I started on it....

He said it's new stuff which has been reported to be extremely effective for treating ADHD, he said my other options were ritalin or dexamphetamine but do I put up with the side effects untill then, and what should I say to him to make sure he doesn't right me out another script of this shit.

If it actually would help me control my ADD I will keep taking it, but so far every day I really have to endure these side effects along with pretty bad acid-reflux to boot and I can taste the horrible chemical taste every time.

So yea, was wondering how I should deal with my next appointment (3 weeks) as he aint going to trial me on stimulants unless I give this stuff a good try for the full month.

Any help is very much appreciated,
looking foward to hearing your opinions.

If you don't like it, stop taking it. Go back and say you did take it and that it didn't work/made you feel like shit. They will put you on something else, probably ritalin.

What he said, but don't take the ritalin if they offer you that. I've got a friend who took ritalin when he was a kid, and it's fucked him up.

Just don't take medication for it. It'll just fuck around with your mind and body in some way that isn't nessecary.

Don't complain about it "not working", considering the doctor himself told you you'll have to give it three weeks; going back and saying it's not working will just result in "well give it some more time".

Call them up and complain about some horrible side effects; read up on some of the common ones for Strattera, pick one that seems logical and run with it. Act disappointed, too; work some angle about how optimistic you were to finally "manage your ADD" and how it's such a shame that these horrible side effects are holding you back from your treatment...

If he said your other options are Ritalin or dexamphetamine, you'll probably go to Ritalin next. Don't quote me, though. Some doctors operate differently.

Your doctor did not diagnose you with "ADHD". S/He simply grouped you into a class of people who are deemed abnormal by the contrasting majority group. It really irks me that just because someone is a little overactive and acts a bit differently, they get diagnosed with a disorder. It's called diversity in the gene pool and everyone is a bit different.

Get off those damn medications. Society just wants to mold you into what they consider to be appropriate, and pump some money into the drug company's pockets while they do it.

Two of my friends who both have ADD/ADHD really badly have both been on strattera, it didn't help either of them. And like you said, it actually made them feel worse, and one of the kids stayed on it for like a month and it didn't help. He's now on ritalin, the other went from Adderall -> Strattera -> Ritalin -> No meds. I have no idea why he got switched.

If they offer you ritalin or concentra, dont take those. I had a bad experience from taking 270mg of it. If you take enough of those your heart will feel like it is going to explode lol

straterra= non stimulant add "medication"
(ive taken it before, for roughly 3 months before to quit. i felt abosolutley no different, was basicly as effective as a sugar pill)

ritalin= decent for treatment of actual add, assuming you actually have it, and arent just being grouped in. even if you dont have it, decent for studying/other situations where mental stimulation is needed. (its more of a mental stim than a physical)

amphetamine-based meds (adderrall, vyvanse, etc.)= the best results i ever got from an add med. IMO, its what your shooting for. even if you dont have add, and are getting grouped in, your mental focus can be improved by using it (responsibly). compared to ritalin, its much more of a mental+physical stimulant.

I've heard Vyvanse is going to become a very popular ADD medication due to its basic inability to be abused. The chemical structure of the amphetamine is changed so that the molecule itself has a sort of time-release effect, and no matter how you consume the pill, that's how it breaks down, thus preventing abuse (in terms of manner of consumption). So, my guess is, if you complain about shittera you might get prescribed this. And Vyvanse > shittera by lots.

L0l i'm tuh retardz0r who thinks we are talking about taking these meds recreationally, not medicinally.
ITS THE OTHER WAY ROUND, FAILCOLYTE.
Besides, who the fuck attempts to abuse concerta anyway? and taking 270mg is 5 times the recreational dose. -If you follow Panthrax's guide to abusing the meds that is, 54mg is more than enough. Wow, this whole thing stinks of retard.
You realise you have a disease.

Ok cheers guys, will toss this srattera in the bin then....

Any advice on getting a script for dexamphetamine/vyvance, that is about the only thing I reckon is worth trying again, otherwise it'll have to be self-discipline for controlling my ADHD.

(I am an aussie by the way)

Thanks in advance.

Seriously this. Do you think it is a good, healthy idea to take amphetamines every day?

Yeah man, right on!

Just because you cant focus in class or study at home, why try to fix that?

If you're suffering from a disorder that is unresponsive to therapy (like schitzophrenia for example) then it is toally irresponsible to take medications for it. Just Be your unemployable, tinfoil hat wearing self!

Celebrate your diversity man! Who cares if you fail your classes, cant get in to a good college, and wind up flipping burgers your whole life? Thats who you are man, be proud of that!

You have no idea what you are talking about.

ADHD is caused by under-stimulation of the central nervous system. This general lack of stimulation causes affected people to adopt "stimulation seeking behavior". This is characterized by an inability to focus on one task becasue a certain level of CNS stimulation is required to maintain focus.

Seriously this. Do you think it is a good, healthy idea to take amphetamines every day?

Taking CNS stimulants to treat central nervous system depression is as logical as taking CNS depressants to treat central nervous system over-excitation (like taking benzodiazepines to prevent siezures).

OP: This kind of idiocy is why I always advise people not to ask about actual medical problems on BLTC. Talk to your doctor about your concerns, and if he feels they're justified then he will put you on a different medication. If what you are experiencing is normal, and will probably improve, then he may keep you on the meds you are on. In any event, he has the knowledge and motivation to do what is in your best interest. People here have neither.

There are alot of people who take these stimulants simply because they want to tweek and/or use them to stay awake for long periods of time with little sleep and focus clearly, like in a stressful job or in college. Which I think is bullshit. I agree that most just need to be themselves, but...

I can remember when I was in kindergarden and there was this little girl, samantha I think it was, who was batshit hyper. Her mom had to be there everyday just to hold her down, literally hold her down while she struggled to get free and run around the room, jumping off of shit and yelling.

I guess what i'm saying is that while alot use it for non-medical reasons or either get lumped in with a group, or have a shitty doctor, or whatever, there are some legitimate medical uses for this stuff.

Peace.

Ugh, just cause you're a attentionwhoring monkey and want something to blame it on, doesn't mean it exists.

Seriously, ALL the kids I know that have been diagnosed with it (alot), either were in it for the drugs, or grew out of it (IE took responsibility of their idiocy/quit their idocy) when they grew older.

Although I agree with you on the not using the internet for medical problems.

Edit; The strattera is making him feel shitty and it's not really helping. Doesn't that kinda point towards him not having it ?

I say get a second opinion.

No offense man, but i hate when people disagree with modern medicine because they "know people for whom they think its not true"

FDA approved drugs and drug treatments undergo decades of research done by thousands of licensed doctors and medical researchers. Not you, nor I, nor any non-medical professional has the authority to issue an opinion about them.

I'm not saying that we should blindly follow authority, but any indictment you make needs to be made based on a scientific review of the relevant data done by qualified researchers, not "I know a guy who..." Thats not even psuedo-science, its just conjecture.

Strattera takes about 6 weeks to work effectivly. I never felt any change while on it though. IMO if you want to get your shit done in class go on to the 36 mg one. It's instant. Down side, some anxiety.
The acid-reflux of Strattera is awfull.

Did you smoke pot before you got diagnosed with ADD ?

Cause that's probably what's causing it.
