It occurred to me that this was never really made clear in school. I swear I remember something along the lines of:

- guy begins spreading HIV to other humans in Africa by having sex with them

- HIV/AIDS gets spread to the US somehow by people having sex and traveling

- somehow a gay man in America contracts HIV/AIDS

- HIV/AIDS gets spread throughout gay American community because of promiscuous unprotected sex prominent in gay community

- American doctors identify the disease for the first time
