Stockpiling gas
Gas is probably low as it's gonna be right now (1.98 in my area). I was just thinking would if I had one of those huge tanks farmers have and filled it with gas right now and then wait for it to get higher, then sell it to people for a discouted price, but still higher than what I paid for it. That could get you some good money I'd image...

It was been bought up before from what I remember. To make any sort of decent profit you would have to buy a lot of it. To store gas in volume, you need a hazerdous goods storage license.
And to store it all you would need something of substantial size, ie: Big ass container; Those aren't cheap! That would be a big investment.
You would also need a way of transporting it from the servo to your storage which would involve multiple containers/trips.
Basically it would be a poor investment if you look at it that way.
You would also need to wait for petrol to come back up to a decent price before you could sell it on for a discounted price but still make good profit. You'll want to make 20c + a litre before it would be worth selling it. Time spent waiting would mean there's the petrol sitting there going stale.
To top it all off, petrol will most likely go down another 10-20 cents before you start seeing it come back up.
As mentioned last time this was bought up, you would be better off storing large quantities and having it for personal use. you won't make money, but you would save more than what you would of made.

Re: Stockpiling gas
A more reliable idea is acquiring agricultural fuel and selling it to motorists.
I don't think it is possible to do in Australia any more.

if one was to fill a giant container up with gas adn save it for personal use in teh future lets say 6months-1 year would it effect the gas since its been sitting there for so long?

No. It has been sitting in the ground for thousands of years.
The only concern would be condensation forming on the inside of the tank. You will have to pump in dehumidified air.

Re: Stockpiling gas
My father told me gasoline turns to varnish if it sits for too long. He could have been full of shit.
OP - Cut down on your investment costs and store the gasoline in several of those big styrofoam ice chests they sell at supermarkets for like five bucks each. Keep the ice chests somewhere out of sight, like in your garage near your hot water heater. You'll be all set to profit.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal, because you could make something with it. Gas stations will limit you; you can't take a 55 gallon drum and fill it up, that's for sure.

Re: Stockpiling gas
Gasoline does lose its integrity after about 6 months of sitting. It breaks down to some degree and can lead to varnish in fuel lines. Fuel stabilizers such as STA-BIL help prevent this occurrence, but you would need about one 10 oz. bottle for 25 gallons. The price to keep gasoline stable would cut into your profit if you intend to store a large amount of gasoline for any extended period of time.

Sure you can, they sell, you buy. There's no laws saying you can't buy gas in copious quantities.

Re: Stockpiling gas
I've thought about doing this but just for personal use. Assuming I work in town again next summer, I'll probably drive less than 1000 miles all summer total. I got an 18 gallon tank and the car gets a paltry 14 mpg. So I would need about...71 gallons. I saw gas for $1.85 recently. It's definitely going to be higher than that come summer time, and if last summer is any indication of this summer, it's going to be around $3.80 on average.
71 gal at $1.85/gal is $135.
71 gal at $3.80/gal is $270.
Savings of $135...cutting the price in half.
Hmm...I wonder how much two 55 gallon drums would cost me...$20 each maybe? If I saved $100 on gas over the whole summer, this could very well be worth it.
Oh and they sell fuel stabilizer to prevent gas from going "stale."
edit: http://store.bayteccontainers.com/rechigdenpol.html
$60?? Well shit. I'm sure used cheaper ones can be found...

You should find 44/55 gallon drums for free. Look around airports.

You slow-witted bitch. Are you seriously that fucking stupid that you can't pick up on flagrant sarcasm? Obviously gasoline disolves styrofoam, and it should be apparent, even to a mentally challenged child, that storing copious amounts of a flammable substance near to a hot water heater is a bad idea. Please pull your head out of your ass and think before you place your dirty fingers on the keyboard.

At the station where I used to work there was a guy who'd come and fill some big ass tank with diesel for his company. You could definetely fill up a 55 gallon drum at a gas station, but you might want to talk to the attendant first to make sure that they're cool with it. It'll also take a while as the pumps shut off like at $50.00 or $75.00.

You could potentially lose some of the aromatic hydrocarbons, which as I understand it is the important (flammable) part of the gas.

Most aromatic hydrocarbons are carcinogenic. While they are flammable, the amount in petrol is negligible.
Petrol can go 'stale' if not left in a full container. The lighter components waft away, oxidation and condensation can occur..
As long as it is left in a full container it will be fine. If you are really worried about contamination then use a filter.
After all, hasn't the oil been in the ground for millions of years?

Oil, not gas. Gas is extremely refined and volatile compared to regular crude.

Re: Stockpiling gas
theres places called gas banks. you pre buy bulk gas and pay a fixed rate based on the current price of gas. they had this on the news while ago and some people are still paying 89 cents per gallon because they paid for it a long time ago.
