In terms of getting laid, I'm sure ugly girls can find it a lot easier than a low self-esteem ugly guy. I do know a fair few ugly guys who have realized they may as well be a complete cunt to get the women. Whereas because I'm so pretty, I don't want to be the cock. I want to be the guy girls go "he's so good looking and a great personality", so I promote the image of me having a good personality (it's not bad and don't worry, I'm not that shallow). I'd still hate to be an ugly girl because having a vagina would suck. Seriously, think about it. 3 days a month you have to deal with blood coming out of it and second of all pregnancies. Ew I fucking hate when ugly fat girls think they're too good for other people. They're everywhere. I think what it is is that they turn thoughts like "I've never been laid because I'm ugly and fat" into "I've never been laid because I'm better than most people and they don't deserve/couldn't handle me." i think honest to god, in 90% of cases a girl who is 'ugly' simply just doesn't know how to make herself look good. i've noticed that alot of girls i think are hot don't really even have very good facial features or anything special about them.. just good makeup, a nice body (very loosely usable/subjective.. but there are obviously unattractive body types) and good looking skin. now i'm not saying any girl can become a bombshell, but with enough work i think any girl can be "interesting". And you know what I mean. There are girls you just simply IGNORE because they look dull. and this includes girls who you can tell are very pretty, but just don't have "it" to make you WANT them.

some people just aren't in the 'know' about how to present themselves, and that can stem from the group of friends you hang out with, furthering the 'nerds=ugly' stereotype into a perpetual circle.

I know this probably sounds like a troll responses (like all mine are) but this one isn't.

Honestly, I was a rather homely kid. And even when I started to grow into my features, as many people do, I still felt unattractive because that was the identity I had always identified with. I eventually learned to dress in clothes that flattered me, and take care in my appearance, as well as losing a few pounds (not that I really needed it). All of those things didn't really make me all that much more attractive, but the confidence I gained did. I eventually started to think of myself as nice-looking, and that made a world of difference in how others perceived me.

By lucky I mean that there are varying degrees of genetic giftedness. Most girls can be attractive if they put care into their appearances, stay in shape, and feel good about themselves. Some girls will always be naturally more attractive, and with a little effort can be total babes, but makeup and clothes can only go so far. Most of us just have to work with what we have and hope for the best.

I agree. But there are a fair number of girls that seem beyond help, whether it's due to levels of aforementioned genetic giftedness (in the aesthetic area) or they could just be too stupid/clueless to actually put their best foot forward without tripping over and entangling themselves in a huge pile of fail.

I'm sounding very critical of these unfortuitious folk. I just see how bad it could be. There are some girls that just make me cringe, when I examine their 'situation' and begin accidentally falling into their shoes (I have decent empathy and the whole consideration for other people's situations thing). Sometimes there are just the people you can't help but stamp with the internal "lacking in all manner of redeemable qualities, send to processing plant to be made into fertilizer." And women are afforded fewer options, due to their often perceived 'place' within society... granted that's changing, but there is still a lot of ground to cover in areas of gender equality, etc.

Often women are valued for their charisma or social/emotional-awareness, as well as obviously physical appearance, and a bunch of other things that tend to be seen as desirable in a female partner. I don't by any means think that those are the only areas women are valuable in, but typically those are the sorts of qualities sought by many males, it seems.

And sometimes I just think of those really ugly, stupid girls who seem utterly devoid of charm and all manner of cultural capital, and I just feel really bad inside for some reason.

There's like literally nowhere for them to go... except some dark hole somewhere, where they'll work in a sewing mill or something to support their senile/incontinent parents in some damp and dingy appartment somewhere. I guess they're filling an important social niche or whatever. It's just a weird sort of 'world' to think about.

Also, because it obviously doesn't get much publicity, being so unglamourous and lacking in all the things we typically like to surround ourselves with. Sometimes it just makes the world appear a bit cruel. Though what do you know, I suppose that's what people often say about the world (that it is cruel/indifferent.)

And I'd say it would also be equally a problem for gay men, with men in general being a bit more shallow. I know the ugly gay men at the bars, etc seem to get seemingly no attention... while perhaps an inordinate amount of attention will be lavished on the very goodlooking. That also makes me feel bad, but I also get why things tend to work that way.

I don't consider myself shallow (as a male), but I won't lie, I am definately more shallow than most of my female friends. I don't really make any attempt to conceal it, either. I guess the stereotype is true, and our minds are just wired for processing more visual/spatial data. I suppose one can't really argue with the cards they're dealt, many of my 'hot-buttons' just happen to be visually stimulated.

I agree most people can look decent if they put enough consideration to cultivate a decent sense of 'style' and can employ a consistent hygiene or workout program, and are capable of some level of aesthetic appreciation or understanding. Some people just seem helpless in these areas, though. I don't think its very complicated, but it seems to go over many people's heads.

I have met quite a few, and a ripper personality can make up for physical shortcomings. Unfortunately confidence seems to be tied to looks in our society and I have met some extremely unfortunate cases. Take for instance the first girl I dated, she had horrible acne all over her body and just didn't have an attractive body type to me. But her personality at first impression was pretty good. That and the fact that I was pretty desperate being a virgin back then was my basis for dating her. As I got to know her better I found the deeper I dug what I had thought was wrong and was a complete 180 from what I thought, and became less attracted to her because of the personality. But on the other hand a "physically" attractive lass can have the personality of a shit-covered brick and she'll find some bloke who will stick with her despite her tantrums just because she gets him off.

What I've found from experience is that a good mix of the two will always win as the most attractive.

As the previous guys were saying, we're very visual/aware and the "ugly" girl will get turned over compared to the confident/attractive ones, which is just about the same for "ugly" guys. If you want to argue this take this situation:

You are an average looking <insert gender> and you see the following 4 <opposite gender> sitting there:
1. Great personality, great body
2. Dull personality, great body
3. Great personality, dull body
4. Dull personality, dull body

9 times out of ten if you are superficial and you meet in a pub/club you'd go for the ones with great bodies otherwise you'd go for the one with the dull body but great personality if none of the lookers are available, where as the unfortunate ones would be stuck at the bar, til some drunk and horny person decided to take them for a ride either because they're either too drunk/horny or just desperate. That's not to say some reasonable looking people date "ugly" people.

All you did was convince yourself you were already good-looking. This completely contradicts your advice. For the girls who aren't already hot, they can't just look in the mirror and say to themselves "zomg i'm so hot why didn't i ever notice it roflcopter!!11!1!!1!!" Some girls actually have to work at it.
