Her friends have made it known that she doesn't really like me back (at least they said that) but I am not getting that vibe from her. We still text and chat and are cool together but they still say that she doesn't like me as more then a friend.

Well in that case, what seems like the better option?
1. Have the balls to get sexual with a girl the first time, and avoid becoming "just friends" altogether. No change necessary.
2. Become friends with a girl, avoid contact with her for years while you improve yourself and change your personality, get back in contact her a long time down the road, and hope that you have enough balls this time to make a move.

Option 2 might be necessary if you're overweight or just a very unlikeable person, but for average guys, there's no reason to. Girls do find guys sexually attractive, and they'll lose it when you've talked to them for long enough without making any advances. If you take a chance while she still finds you new and exciting, then you have a shot. If you never take that chance, then she'll lose interest. Hence the friend-zone. If you make an advance in the friend zone, she will say "I think of you as a brother, let's just be friends" or something like that.

The friendzone is just a vague concept that isn't 100% real, but it is common enough to give it merit.
