If you could talk to your future child....
Lets pretend you are in the future and you just had your first healthy baby. What would you say to it? How would you raise it? What do you think is important in a developing human's life?
Would you baby it or just let it roam around with it's friends?
Many houses are different, would you emulate how you grew up? Or would you do the best you can to provide your child a better life?
I dunno what made me write this thread, but I thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss.

Re: If you could talk to your future child....
I would tell him or her to trust in their own judgment, ask questions, learn how to make decisions, be adaptable, always be willing to listen and consider different perspectives, be tolerant, understand that there are always people that care and support them, have faith in people, learn from the mistakes of others, and never be afraid to stand up for their beliefs. There are a million lessons, but those are a handful of key ones.
The three major goals in life, outside of happiness, are to be healthy, wealthy, and wise; realize that wealth comes in many forms.
I never baby children, but I would be sure that the people around me knew that the child was to be watched over and treated with respect.
I'd let my child be friendly with anybody and everybody. I'd help and offer advice, but it helps to broaden a person's perspective.
Remember that your attitude dictates a lot in this life.
I would attempt to provide the child with some stability, but they would be subjected to my enjoyment of travel and adventure.
It's every generation's job to surpass the generation that came before. I'd try to pass on that interesting family value and see what comes of it.
These are the basics that spring to mind.

Daddy drinks because Mommy is crazy....
No I would actually let the kid make his own decisions and his own mistakes, thats where my own parents failed me. I would also let them make friends with who ever they want.
I would tell them that if they wanted to something they would have to work to earn it, because that is simply how the world works.
I would also give them their space, because being an overbearing parent hurts everyone involved/

Re: If you could talk to your future child....
I don't plan on having kids. But, I'll pretend for this activity...
Anyways, I would teach them to be honest and have respect for themselves and their elders. I would spoil them rotten, but make sure they knew the value of a dollar and hard work. I would tell them to go after their dreams and believe in themselves (cheesy, I know). I'd try to be their friend so that they would trust me and be comfortable with me, but I would also want them to respect me and do what I tell them to.

I would tell my child to only breed with blonde-haired people as to ensure his/her blonde-ness (he/she would be blonde because I'd have engineered his/her genes to be so)

Re: If you could talk to your future child....
Spend some time with friends. Go to birthday parties, do stupid shit, and enjoy being around people your own age. My father disagreed with this philosophy, and it fucked me up seriously. So that, and I won't worry too much if he's not smart. You don't have to be smart to be successful, just able to kiss major ass, so I won't be too upset if he, or she, isn't a genius at school. It sure didn't help me in the long run, whereas the kids who were social and kissed ass all went off to some nice scholarships. Lastly, I'm not yelling at him, fuck that. Though I will be teaching him not to take shit, and to defend himself.
This is all assuming the kid somehow comes into existence without my say so, cause I'm way too fucked up to ever want to have one.

And watch them become homeless (after they don't take your 'shit'), jobless and kicked out of school?
Grrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeat parenting!
Oh and Euda, you hit the nail on the head. Pretty much everything I'd try and do. I'd raise my kid to defend people around him and people who aren't able to defend them selves. To realize he's the same as any other human in 99 out of a 100 ways.
I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't try and have my morals rub off on them.
I'd set clear and distinct boundaries and be very strict about them, everything else goes. Example: swearing is okay. Swearing AT people is not okay.
I'd try and raise them so I never have to justify WHY they should do something with "because I'm your parent and I said so", I'd want them to listen because they respect me.
And lastly I'd teach them the importance of friends and family, that they should never be taken for granted. They should try to make the most of every situation.

Re: If you could talk to your future child....
I would do something that most parents dont actually do. "THE FUCKING JOB OF A PARENT". In other words i would make sure every year that they are a step closer to fending for themselves. Id always be there for them, but its important kids know who is in charge of their lives.
