These are not cleaning patches, but patches for shooting blackpowder guns.

I bought a lot of 100 .54 caliber balls from the Civil War on e-Bay for about $30, they say they dug them up from a former battlefield, and I bought these patches so that I can finally shoot my A. Waters 1837 Percussion Pistol.
:D.

So this would be where you put the grease for the patches?

I have to buy patches, as I use an Otis kit.

It's worth it though, the Otis system kicks ass.

And, I got the kit for free, so paying $8 a year for patches isn't too bad.

Oh, and Lava, you can put your weed in there :D

It's definitely not safe. It's flash powder (poor quality at that) which has an added oxidizer in the form of aluminum powder (added to blackpowder in varying proportions), which typically increases the strength and/or brisance of an explosive, making it dangerous to use in a firearm.

I thought flash powder was aluminum as a fuel with an oxidizer(usually potassium perchlorate) added to the aluminum, I didn't think aluminum was an oxidizer(for one where is the oxygen coming from on elemental Al?) And I didn't think blackpowder had anything to do with flash powder.

Flash powder is a pyrotechnic composition, a mixture of oxidizer and metallic fuel which burns quickly and if confined will produce a loud report. It is widely used in theatrical pyrotechnics and fireworks (namely salutes, eg. cherry bombs, M-80s, and firecrackers), and was once used for flashes in photography.
Different varieties of flash powder are made from different compositions; most common are potassium perchlorate and aluminium powder. Sometimes, sulfur is included in the mixture to increase the sensitivity. Early formulations used potassium permanganate instead of perchlorate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_powder
Yep aluminum is the fuel and it has an oxidizer added, nothing about black powder.

lol, FP in a gun. The only thing your gonna get is some fragmention in that pretty face of yours. I bet you could get away with using ammonpulver.. maybe.

HOWEVER, i did see a video of someone using acetone peroxide (a primary explosive) to shoot bb's out of a copper pipe. How he did this without uh, death, is pretty mind boggling.

It is alot more like an explosive then a propellant, i would imagine it would still put alot more strain on your barrel then black powder.

For patches we use cotton bed sheets cut to size, just go to a fabric store/2nd hand clothing store and get whatever's 100% cotton and cheap. You might also want to look into buying a bullet mold, molding lead's easy. For black powder: if you can't buy it you'll probably have to make it. Don't use flash powder, you'll blow up your gun. There's plenty of bp recipes floating around, but if you have trouble there's always W&C or BB

DO NOT use the stuff from firecrackers in your gun. As someone said its flashpowder also as stated its made of Aluminum and Potassium Perchlorate usually, there are different variations but this the cheapest and easiest. Black powder on the other hand is Potassium Nitrate(75%), Sulfur(10%) and Charcoal(10%) really its not that hard to make a good batch of but if you want consistency i would say buy some. If you want to learn how to make black powder to shoot your gun go to Backyard ballistics lot of great pyros there not jackasses. Ive used home made Blackpowder to shoot a homemade cannon, shot a AA battery over 1000meters(I somehow was lucky enough to find it). If you use the flash powder you may just blow your hand off, most people don't know but different explosives explode differently. Some explosives such as BLack powder have a PUSHING effect which is why it makes a good propellent, while others like flash powder have a SHATTERING effect which makes it a good blowing things to bits explosive.

As to Original question I have no clue id have to say I think it looks sort of like a little pocket sex toy as someone said. d

Deflagration versus Explosion if I remember right? Dependant on how fast it burns?
I don't know why I always thought the stuff in firecrackers was BP. It explains many accidents through stuff blowing up I've had before, including small toy cannons, rockets, etc.
Lol @ pocket sex toy. :D. But seriously, its thinner than my finger, and not long enough to reach my prostate. And way too sharp for urethral stimulation.
The only thing I could see it being used for would be clit piercing, but that is definitely not my thing.

Actually the speed of the explosion isn't the factor. What you are thinking of is Deflagration versus Detonation. The difference is things like Black powder and flash powder and Double base Smokelesspowder(stuff used in modern Ammunition), deflagrate which means they burn slow so the gases released don't exceed speed of sound. Where as C4, dynamite, TNT burn faster then the speed of sound and thus Detonation.

I can't remember exactly what it is that makes a particular explosive a pusher or a shatterer or other types. Not all PUSHING explosives are low power, things LIKE ANFO(shit used in Oklahoma City bombing) has more of a pushing explosive. Its really difficult and long to explain. If anyone is interested in learning about fireworks, explosives, gunpowder ect ect check out APCforum.net a lot of REALLY good knowledgeable people there. If your interested in it to BLOW people stuff up and be a cockstain don't bother these are RESPONSIBLE people that take this serious and don't like people that give them bad names.

Agreed.

The current industry standard is 70/30 KClO4 and Al. I forgot to add put that. That is most likely what you'll encounter in modern, mass-produced fireworks in China, the US, or Europe, but older flashpowder derivatives utilized sulfur, which is chemically instable with perchlorates and dramatically increases the sensitivity. Other, rarer types of flashpowder use nitrates and Al, or Mg. This is probably done to utilize old stocks of blackpowder, and due to the US laws limiting the charge to 500g(? I believe), much of the time it's diluted with sawdust, charcoal (hence the BP mention), or other adulterants to fill out larger casings.

And I highly recommend BB. I used to post there prolifically.

Also, the issue with explosive speed is relevant in some cases because it's somewhat related to brisance. The VoD of explosives tends to directly affect brisance, the shattering power. Because FP can detonate when confined, it automatically has a higher brisance than a low-order explosive. Also, ANNM was used in the McVeigh bombing until he ran out of NM, and resorted to adding diesel, which explains the amount of damage done to the Murray building.

Would it be possible for me to manufacture my own BP safely?
If so, what would I need to do it?

Yes, it's very safe just so long as you don't do it near a flame or something. You'd just need something to mix it in and something to stir it.

And Random looney, i think you must have meant .5 grams, 500 grams would be around a pound and a quarter if i'm not mistaken, which qualifies more as a bomb than a firecracker.

Its the propogation of the shockwave thats faster than the speed of sound in the substance, not the gasses are faster than the speed of sound.

Yes. You need potassium nitrate, charcoal (sugar will work too. Just don't use briquette charcoal. Use activated carbon, or make your own in an aerobic environment), and some sulfur. Basically, you mix it into the charcoal while damp with alcohol in a mortar and pestle, or use a blender (not my recommendation. I forget what "method" it's called), or mix in a static-guarded ziplock bag. Keep away from static, electric, frictional, and temperature shock.

The sugar/nitrate mix is extremely easy to make, it should work but it's very dirty when it burns. there's recipes that call for iron oxide too, but I've never found it necessary. You could add a drop or two of food coloring so you know it's not just sugar though.

Sugar/nitrate alone will more then likely just gum the fuck out of his weapon and do more damage then good.

The best thing to do would be invest $10 in a rock tumbler, get your hands on some sulfur the purer the better but garden shit will work just not as good as lab grade stuff, and some Potassium Nitrate(KNO3) used as fertilizer or stump remover and other various things its also known as Salt Peter, the last and EASIEST is charcoal. One easy way to get charcoal is have a fire then when you get the nice red hot coals, just pour some water on the coals and use that. Thats how I used to get my charcoal. Add all the three together in the rock tumbler with some lead balls and turn it on for about 6 hours and you will get some pretty good BP without much hassle. Like I said if you really interested in making some its VERY easy just go talk to the guys in BB, but better would be APCForum.net theres a lot more ADVANCED guys there and less tards.

Also, i've heard that the softer the wood your charcoal's made of, the better it'll be for black powder.

You can make your own ball mill, like I said for all this go to APCforum.net and look around there, all the information you want is there, how to build, make and get the stuff. If you mean charcoal like you would use for a grill that won't work.

And yea the "softer" the wood the better, I think the best is charcoal made from willow. But any old stuff is good enough like I said I used to just take the red coals from a fire pour water on them and let em dry. A lot of other people take the time to do it the "proper" way but this is effective and easy, plus its winter almost so you probably will be having fires if you have a fireplace anyway why not use it.

Yeah that is kind of a hearth i suppose. It didnt really matter I just wanted to clear that up for myself. But we call a hearth here the thing a iron wood burning stove or iron fireplace sits on.
I just took out a iron fireplace and we had to take down the hearth it was sitting on which was cinder block and then tiled over top. so I was just curios. Really though it doesnt matter. Sorry for taking you off topic.
