best Linux for my shitty system

i have a really shitty computer and im tired to using XP on it cause its slow as a mother fucker


it has 128 Mb of RAM and a 2 Gig hard drive
i dont know anything else about it other than it was bought brand new with windows 98 about ten years ago



what would be the fastest linux for my system? i will only be using it for playing music from my external hard drive, thats its. turn on, play music, turn off. and i wont be installing any extra programs than a simple music player, so i have roughly 2 gigs to work with

I would suggest Debian; its pretty easy and quite light. there are distributions that will be faster, however you may compromise speed for ease of use.

there's a distro called Damn Small Linux that's based off of Debian that can run pretty fast in the environment that you're talking about.

Good distro, I'd love to have it as my main but the kernel it has won't pick up my ethernet card.

I'd also checkout Slitaz and Puppy Linux.

Comile your own Kernel. It is very easy on Debian based distros to compile, create package install etc...

Most distributions will do, as long as you go with lightweight applications.
I recommend Zenwalk.

how easy is very easy? I have difficulty mounting drives via commandline and compiling from source
