Default Moms Opiate Addiction (long)

It really sucks guys. My mom was is an opiate addict that has caused problems off and on. Growing up it fucked me up emotionally as she entered a psychosis phase from too many pills. Finding her almost dead on the couch wasn't good either. She eventually went to rehab and was in the AA/NA program for a while.

Once i started drinking in high school, she started drinking because she wanted to be "Normal". She wanted to be like all the other adults/people who could have a drink or two for fun. It didnt take long before that spun out of control and she was drinking a bottle of whine a night.

Fast forward to me landing in jail, and her drinking intensified. She eventually got a roommate to help with the house payments. However this idiot was doped up on opiates all the time. He got drunk and his friends who pushed him off a ledge. He got prescribed all sorts of pills. Oxy, Vicodin, etc. etc. Then My mom ended up dating a huge alcoholic who also used pills. He tried to kick my ass once when i told him to fuck off for getting in my business.

I confronted my mom about her pill/alcohol abuse, and she almost punched me in the face when i threatened to call child services to make sure my 9 yr old sister didnt go through what i went through. I tried multiple approaches. I tried to be compassionate and understanding, and i tried to be the asshole who was gonna ruin her life, nothing worked.
..............................................

THe irony comes into play when she was on vacation with her asshat boyfriend. I dont know what happened exactly (She claims a wave slammed her against the floor in Hawaii). But she came back with a busted shoulder. She had to go into surgery and sure enough, the doctors prescribed her medicine for pain. Shes has an unlimited supply of pills, and she recently got a broken rib somehow. She getting herself deeper and deeper. She's using the excuse for her pill use by chanting "IM IN PAIN!" and wont shut up about how bad she hurts. I caint help but be skeptical, when she continues to do chores with her bad arm, and doesnt wear the sling the doctor gave her.

Finally, after whining about pain to the doctors, and after her injuries not getting better, the doctors gave her Fentanyl patches!. YOU DONT GIVE A FUCKING ADDICT FENTANYL PATCHES!

I go visit her when i can, to check in on her, and to make sure my sister isnt getting fucked with. Its horrible guys. She hardly eats, her skin is sagging, her checks are caving in.......and there is a Fentanyl patch on her arm each time i see her. Its like seeing a needle stuck in her arm while she tries to talk to me. My mom is BI-Polar, and is either going to overdose, or go through withdraws. She has no idea what kind of hole she is getting herself in. Shes gonna kill herself, or overdose, or get arrested after she flips out from some psychotic phase. I have no idea what to do. Ive tried everything. And she ignores that she has a problem, and claims shes in a world of pain, which gives her an excuse to use.

THx if you read this far any advice/suggestions/stories?

Give her one last chance.

Grab her by the shirt, get close up in her face, and say,"I'm not taking this shit anymore. Make some changes or you will lose your son and daughter."

Then walk out. If she chooses drugs over the family, so be it. Her choice.

Your sister is the most important thing, not your mother. She's an adult and has made choices, and has to live with them. Don't let those choices be forced on your sister.

Sadly the time for this has come and gone. Like i said she has "Legitimate" reasons in the doctors eyes to be using these pills. Because she has convinced everyone that she is in soo much pain and needs these meds, she has every legal right to use them.

My sisters been ok. And i keep going over there to make sure of that. However im just waiting for the train wreck to cause her to change. She needs something fucking horrible to happen to her so she will change. Its the only wake up call shes gonna have. It sounds wrong, but i want my mom to have a near death overdose. Fucking something needs to be done.

Then why don't you take care of your sister...you're bitching about it enough and if you say it was bad when you were a kid..why do you think (how do you know...) what happens when you're not there.

"the time has come and gone" theres always time to help somebody, especially someone part of your family. I think thats a sorry ass excuse for not taking care of your sis, or at least putting her in another environment...

I feel bad saying that but "sadly the time has come and gone" pisses me off. If shes still doing shit and has done shit to you, why not take care of your sis?

I know you said she has a legitimate reason to use the scripts but you can still do something for your sister. I don't know how old you are, or what you're job occupation is if you're in school or know any of your family..but you CAN do something to help your sister.

EDIT: using the "sorry too late excuse" would be like an addict (no offense to anyone here just trying to give a example) giving a reason to keep on using.

I'm not sure a near death overdose will help if she's that deep in the hole. 15 years or so back, my uncle had an overdose where his heart stopped beating. He didn't change a thing.

Seriously.. do something bro. This sounds really shitty, and intervention material. I don't approve of alot of that show's cases but this definitely belongs on there.

although the chances of getting on TV are relatively low, there is still more you can do. to be honest, it is probably too late for your mother. i have been in this situation and it sucks. my uncle was just like this and i always thought it was so stupid, but he died. they are so stubborn and they believe they are justified in it.

be there for your sis, but one of these days you've got to man the fuck up and tell your mom you aren't playing, tell her what she's doing and what a bad fucking influence she is.

drag her ass to church one day. Get her involved w/ your local church. I have known 3 people like this, and it was just one sunday at church that started their climb for the better for 2 of the 3. The other guy never had anyone to help or care for him. He ended up killing himself. Dont give up on ur mom. As long as you're there for her, then there is still hope. But I strongly recommend that u pray for her and get her to church and try to get u and ur family to adapt some strong christian beliefs.

Easy... tell the doctor who's prescribing the pills to her whats up. Of course this might not stop her from getting the pills from a dealer, but it will give her a wake-up call I'm sure.

Default Re: Moms Opiate Addiction (long)

I have grown up with the same thing OP.... albeit mostly a different type of drug...

For the early part of my life i knew my dad was an alcoholic, but he was never the angry type, he just drank too much, it never got nearly as bad as my mom.... the thing that separates them is that my dad quit drinking. For basically my entire life my mom has been addicted to benzos and opiates for a while.... She has back problems which gets her hydrocodone, and anxiety, depression, and bi polar disorders.... If you go through her bathroom you will find the remains of what would be enough prescription drugs to kill everyone i know. xanax, ambien, soma, hydrocodone, ativan, various other muscle relaxants and antipsychotics like seroquel.....

My mom is the most commonly fucked up person in my life, and i know some druggy fucking people.... she takes enough benzos on a regular basis to basically lose consciousness.... she will fall down the stairs or out of bed, she will pass out in her dinner or when making a piece of toast. just fall to the floor and be out..... but what is worse is when she decides to get in the car and go for a drive, a while back after my car wreck i had to go get an MRI to make sure i didnt have a tumor or anything and the entire way there she was passing out at the wheel and veering off the road... we made it there and almost all the way back but as we turned into our neighborhood she hits a mailbox.... one day she tried me and my sister up from school while fucked up, got in a wreck.... cops could tell she was on something so they searched her and found pills out of their container, so she was taken to jail for the 2nd time.... the first she did the same thing but they just happened to lose her blood work so they had no proof and she got off on all charges....

She has been to rehab after each trip to jail, the first time was just for a few days and the next was for about 10.... neither helped much, at my fucking birthday dinner that even i showed up stone cold sober to she was passing out while eating.... she didn't have the coordination to cut a steak and eventually just gave up....

Halloween i get home from school, walk into the living room where my step dad is watching tv and i hear a thump from upstairs..... that noise usually means she is fucked up and fell out of bed. I ask my step dad if she is fucked up and he just says "not that i know of, but go check on her" and i walk upstairs in no particular hurry because finding mom passed out on the floor is nothing new and when i get up there i see her having a seizure. i move her from where she was because he head was propped about a foot off the ground on the bedside table which was just how she landed, and call for my step dad, then the 911...

This wasn't even her first seizure, she isn't even an epileptic, its just benzo withdrawal.... and honestly i think its going to kill her before she decides to quit.... 1 seizure in a bathtub or car and she is dead.... taking some vicoden while she is on as many benzos as normal and she is looking at respiratory failure.....

oh and yea you could try calling the number on the bottle but wait until she learns about doctor shopping.... yea that doc might not give them to her any more, but another one might..... and then she starts to hide the pills from you.....

Damn Meta, that WAS uncalled for.

Addiction is a terrible thing. Some people just don't care and would rather be holed up with their drugs than to have to function in society. I would almost consider myself one of these people. I've always looked at it as committing slow suicide. Just waiting for things to get better for you, and if they don't just up the drugs until you hopefully die. It's very passive aggressive behavior.

I wouldn't call the numbers and tattle on her because if she loses her meds she might do something drastic like kill herself. It's a really sad situation but just look out for your sister until she's all grown up, and if your mom is still the way she is then just leave her to rot. She's a supposed "mature" human being and she has made up her mind what she wants to do and obviously your efforts to stop her aren't working. It's a sad situation to lose a loved one during life rather than in death, and it's even harder for people to accept it.

Just please look after your sister. That's something no one should have to grow up around.

Hope I've been some help at least. I feel for you.

I used to live in a really shit area (just moved), and all my friends had this story. My best friend's mother was exactly the same way. She ended up leaving her husband and going to live with her drug dealer, because she got her drugs cheaper when she was his 'girlfriend.' It really fucked him up. I myself have had horrible, horrible shit happen to me when i was a kid. My friend has a retarded sister, because their mother did so many drugs while she was pregnant.

What i'm getting at is, None of those people ever got better. Those problems didn't get fixed. I honestly think it's too late for your mother, but that doesn't mean your sister should have to live with it.

Please just watch out for your sister. Terrible things can happen when you're a kid and you're in that environment.

Edit: Fuck you Meta. That was completely uncalled for.

Any chance you can get her to eat some of the tasty things? Simple stuff would probably be best. She is probably lacking in all the nutrients that she needs. Protein, carbs, Vitamin C from OJ or salads, Vitamin D in cheap pill form or the more expensive Cod Liver Oil liquid or capsules.

Malnourished people are more likely to make bad decisions & to be depressed.

Does she like something quick & easy like Kraft Dinner (no name is cheaper)? It has a lot of important nutrients & it's pretty easy to scarf it down quick. Those pasta meals in foil pouches are quick & interesting too. Don't forget the addict's favorite: beef jerky either. :p

She is no doubt seriously lacking in Omega-3 oils (from ocean fish, oysters, clams, shrimp) & this leads to the dumb head & depression to boot.

Find cheap things that are good to tempt her. Heck...is your sister getting fed properly? It's hard to make up later in life for a poor diet when you're a kid. Does she get a breakfast at school (if she needs it)?

Hey...this time of year the Mandarin Oranges are out. They're real easy to eat & have lots of carbs/Vitamin C.

Dude you need to call cps quit being a pussy. if your sis is not being cared for properly or in any kind of danger you need to make the call. your mom probably will overdose eventually and even that does not always open adicts eyesw to what they are doing. if she is ot going to get clean you need to make an ultimatum and follow it. Like cutting all ties with her and calling cps. But if your sister is unsafe now you need to make the call NOW;.

This is the truth.

Overdoses seldom keep and addict away for good. There's always something that you use as an excuse to go back. So, I doubt and overdose will really "scare" you mother away from opiates.

Other than the pain - maybe you should look at her life/talk to her, and try and get to the bottom of the other reasons that manifest themselves as drug use.

And - if your sister isn't being cared for, or being neglected in anyway - you MUST call CPS. She's a child and doesn't deserve some of the things that may happen to her. Physical damage always heals, but psychological damage can sometimes take a lifetime.

Don't let her get caught up in the middle of it.

^this.

Plus, nobody DESERVES to be brought up in that type of environment. You are a creep, Meta.

OP, are you living on your own and able to have your sister live with you? Maybe you could try to get custody of her and try to get some financial support from the government to help take care of her.

Meta you are such a cunt...

BLTC you are a bunch of clueless faggots, this forum is shit, fuck you all. It goes to show how shit it is when you can't provide any decent support/advice for someone suffering negative impact from drug use.

Lame.

dude fuck you, obviously people put in some thoughtful, heartfelt replies. it's not like everyone is in this position, we're just spare minds to help him think through it. who the fuck are you to judge when you didn't even put shit forth?

Take your sister away from her because eventually she is going to be affected by the negative environment she is living in.

Your mom is going to keep digging herself deeper if you don't find a way to stop her. It is more important that you take your sister away from her , and then try to rehabilitate her.

Was pretty annoyed earlier, I guess I just grumped unnecessarily, and yes I shouldn't judge.

Meta you are still a right cock though.

My sister is the only family member i can say i "Love" Without hesitation. Ive tried confronting my mom about this. Multiply times, she keeps denying, denying, denying. Part of it is an ago game im sure of it. She's always tried to be the "Best mom" and when her son has grown to a point where he is looking down on her......it scares her. One time she went to Mexico on a pill run with that roommate who has a fucked up leg. While they were down there, they got so high they crashed her Lexus against some yellow pole. They had to pay the feds off and everything to avoid jail.

Once i found this out i got my grandmother (Poor lady doesn't know a damn thing about drugs). And i sat her and my mom down. Thats when i used all the material i had on my mom. Google searches for vicoden, Strange behavior, testamonials, etc. etc.

Then the big moment came when i asked my mom in front of my grandma how she wrecked her car (She told my grandma and everyone a bull shit lie). She said her lie again and i slowly applied pressure of what i found out. Once i got to the point where i said what really happened she changed her story and started blaming her roommate. "HES A DRUG ADDICT! Your Going to believe him over me!?" Finally i threatened to tell my sisters real father (My old step dad) what was going on unless she got her shit together. She fucking snapped and was about to sock me.
.....................................

Time went by and i didnt speak to her. I couldnt believe after all the lies, drama, bullshit, etc. What she was doing and what she was denying. I was driving over to my step fathers house to tell him about my mom. About a mile to his place i stopped the car, had an epiphany and drove away. I decided there is nothing i can do that she wont be able to get away with. And I would be in more control of my sister if i left the situation alone. Going through my moms pill use and craziness as a child, showed me what a crazy bitch she was, and how horribly screwed up in the head . It was because of the hard situations in my life that i learned to question authority. It was the reason I turned to drug use myself to gain a better understanding, and form my own person.

Ive tried everything guys. As of right now my little sister is fine, and im watching her whenever i can. I dont have a car, and i take a bus/skate 10+ miles just to spend time with her, and to tell her the bull shit will end. My sister is in no physical danger, but the emotional is definitely running its coarse. Between a dad with anger issues and a mom who is a complete junky its hard to watch. And i try to do what i would of wanted a sibling to say to me during those hard times. "Theres a reason moms like that, ignore her....." etc. etc.

My little sister even stands up to my mom and talks back, something i never did as a kid. The bottom line is, if shit ever got physical, or out of control. I would be there for my sister in a heart beat. But as long as my mom is getting prescribed these legal meds, i caint do a damn thing. I never thought id say i hate my mom. I dont hate her, i know shes lost. It just sucks to see the effects on me and the ones i love. My mom just got engaged w/ this guy after 3 weeks! He seems like a cool guy whos in the army. However he has yet to discover my moms a Bi-Polar, pill addict. She just explains her use with "Im in pain". God damn this whole fucking thing sucks ass. And if there is a god, he gave her a perfect excuse/situation to keep using!

Sounds like she needs to hit her bottom dude. She doesn't really have a reason to change right now, she still seems to have her home and her pills. I'd hate to say it, but maybe it IS time to call intervention.

Yeah dude I had to go live with a sibling for a while when my parents were going through some shit. Maybe you should take care of your little sister. I know it sounds difficult but think about her man, she'll love living with her big brother who takes better care of her.

Your sister is the most important thing, not your mother. She's an adult and has made choices, and has to live with them. Don't let those choices be forced on your sister.

This is possibly the most important thing to remember. I realize that she's your mother and you want to help her as much as possible, but it sounds as though she has had plenty of chances to make better choices in her life; she is an adult and she is responsible for her own problems not you and your sister. I grew up in a fairly dysfunctional family, nothing to do with drug use specifically, but my parents have many emotional and a few anger problems. I remember when I tried to solve these for them, though therapy, etc., i just ended up stressing everyone out more, especially me. Try your best to help with the problem, but don't spend time on it to the point where you are forgetting about your sister, your job/schooling, etc. As for what to do exactly, you could try to get her into NA, or you could try using ibogaine to break dependance. I'm not sure how well Ibogaine works for the opiates you mentioned but it does work for heroin: http://www.erowid.org/references/refs_view.php?ID=7240

Edit: Good luck solving that problem man, it sounds like you could use it.
