carrying a relationship into college
so, im a senior in high school and i am in a serious relationship. we are both going to college next year, more than likely very far apart
im not asking what i should do, i know this is completely up to me i just figured maybe older more experienced people can give me insight.
im debating staying with her through the transition. she really wants me to, and she is very saddened by the idea of not being with me. And part of me wants it too. the only thing is, i dont see myself marrying her, and im wondering if its not worth it have a gf freshman year without the intention of marriage eventually. i can see myself easily getting the urge to play the field.
thoughts?

Re: carrying a relationship into college
Fuck LTRs. Maybe you're mature enough to handle it, but I never was. There's trust issues, phone calls taking up all your time, jealousy, etc, all while you're definitely not getting laid.
Maybe she's worth it though.

Why not have a girlfriend and play the field at the same time?

Re: carrying a relationship into college
There are so many different ways this situation could turn out.
First of all, it depends how far away you'll be, how often you'll see her,and how advanced your relationship is.
Second off, you could go to a total cockfest of a school. I mean frat parties that have a five girls to one guy ratio to get in, or just house parties with just a lot of dudes. In this case, probably not worth breaking it off with her.
Obviously if there's a lot of free love at the school you go to, with a lot of girls and a lot of sex.
The main point is to wait till atleast halfway into the semester to decide on the fate of the relationship. You won't regret it, as you'll have everything resolved.

This. The best thing to do is wait. You can always call her and break up over the phone later on.
Also, it's not a very serious relationship if you're already planning on ending it.

I was in the same situation you are in, OP, 2 years ago. Everything Ford said will happen, though if you love her and you can see a future with her stick to it. It was pretty tough at first and still is at times. I love her though, and I can definitely see a future with her, we just celebrated out 3 year anniversary last week. So, like I said if you lover her you can and will make it work, I'm not going to lie it won't be easy, but I'd suggest at least trying to make it work.

Re: carrying a relationship into college
It's working for me so far. I'd been dating my boyfriend for 2 and half years when he left to go to university. I see him every three or four weeks for a day or two. To be honest, it's difficult. It requires a lot of extra effort, communication and trust. However I find that we fight a lot less and in general appreciate each other more because our contact is so limited that we try to make the best of it when we can. It's stressful and challenging, but if you really care about someone it is entirely possible, and very worth it.
However if you're already doubting your future together, it might not be best to keep dragging it on, you know? Like, I don't really think about putting a time limit or any expectations on my relationship; it goes where it goes, but if you're already sure that your relationship is going to time out at some point, it might be best to break it off while it's easy to immerse yourselves in your new lives.

Re: carrying a relationship into college
I've seen this go both ways man. A roommate of mine now, started going out with this girl during highschool.. and now 3 years later- they're still together. How did he do it? Well let's just say what she doesn't know won't hurt her. So in that aspect her being far away can actually be quite helpful.
Now.. on the other hand, my stepbrother just went into his first year of college this year. He stayed with this girlfriend through the transition. And their relationship has been anything but agreeable. They're fighting all the time, and go home all the time to see each other. So they know no one at their schools and are miserable.
Conclusion: It comes down to your relationship, if you think you can keep your distance and fool around and not feel guilty about it. Then I say go for it, if not I wouldn't bother. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Re: carrying a relationship into college
If you can fool around behind your partner's back and not feel bad about it, you really don't have much of a relationship.

Re: carrying a relationship into college
Lot of dumb shit being thrown around in this thread.
This relationship is on it's last legs. It will end. Whether you break it off tomorrow or keep her around long enough to be a prom date, it doesn't matter as long as it gets done before you head off to college.
It's best for both of you.
Some people operate a little differently than others.
Fucking a random skank, does not mean you care about the random skank.
Which still makes what silverfuck said true and you, an idiot.
Thank you, come again.

Re: carrying a relationship into college
You're already doubting the relationship in high school. That's not a bad thing, you're sensible enough to realise that high school sweethearts very rarely work out. Look, you could continue the relationship, I don't doubt that you like her very much, but nights spent on the phone, worrying about her fucking other guys, the cost of travel back and forth... It's not really worth it. You're going to be in uni, man. Don't waste the opportunity to fuck around and have fun. It's part of the uni experience.
After you've slept with a handful of other women, your high school relationship won't seem so epic as you once thought it was. University isn't just full of sluts, think of all the intelligent, cool women you'll meet.
Or maybe you'll regret it. How would I know?

Dude if you think she's worth it. Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't.
It's worth a try if you really like this girl, anyway.
