Define love.
What it is, how it makes you feel, why people experience it, etc.
I've seen/heard some interesting respones.
From serious to humorous.
All are welcomed.

That's not the point what so ever.
I know the definition.
I've been in love and I've had someone be in love with me.
I just wanted to see how creative some would get in a response.
It's an interesting subject if you're smart enough to even consider dwelling on it and conversating.
I'm sorry that I decided to discuss the finer side to affection.
Would you be better suited if I started a thread about something vulgar?
I'm starting to think that you didn't even read what I posted, I think you just read the title and decided to be a prick about it.
Are you that bored that you want to complain on a thread that you don't like?
Sad.
But, it's okay, I don't blame you if you can't comprehend what I'm getting at.

Dude, you said it yourself, you've seen responses to this before. Sure people get creative and shit, but it's always the same cheesy bullshit. If you were to google this, you'd see a million creative suggestions as to what love is.
I pardon that my grumpiness had to affect your thread. It's just that I have a nasty cold and I'm at work on a saturday. Also I really hate this cheesy kinda threads. But I suppose you have every right to make it, good luck with the responses.

You're so right about it being cheesy.
The cheesy part is a necessary evil, I suppose.
I just enjoy how such a simple respone varies from person to person.
And with such a thing it's more likely to get all sorts of respones.
Now if I asked something a bit more specific and concrete, perhaps about something tangible, I would get practically the same "text book" response.
With asking about defining love that leeds to people saying all sorts of things.
Like I said, how the mind and it's concepts and definitions vary from person to person about such a thing just interests me.
Thank you, by the way.
Sorry to hear about the cold and work.

What is love?
I compare love to a drug.
The first time you get it, it's something new and exciting.
You're happy, you feel great.
It's a rush.
If the love is pure... you're hooked.
Once you're rejected, once you can't get a fix... shit goes downhill.
Love withdrawls can be a bitch.
The longer you go without it the more you want it.
I think you chaps get my point by now.

Re: Define love.
Love is like life, in that dumbass Americans think it's like a box of chocolates. Really it's more like a box of chocolates that has been left in the sun all day, next to Forest on that fucking park bench while he tells his story. You try to grab one that looks good but it slips between your fingers and you're left with sticky brown shit all over your hands. And that makes it even harder to grab another one, because you've been tainted with the failure of the first attempt.
So you wipe your hands on your pants or the park bench and have another go. If you can't get the ones that are straight up chocolate, you have a go for the liquid centres. Unfortunately for you, they're all melted too, and even though you try as hard as you can to scoop the melted concoction into your mouth, you can't do it without looking like an idiot to everyone around you. All you do is stain your clothes with chocolate and goo.
So you give up on those ones for a while. You regroup, try some new tactics. For a while you contemplate going for the ones with nuts, surely they won't slip between your chocolate coated fingers. But you're not sure if it's worth it, after all, the chocolate on those will fall away as well, and you'll be left only with the nut. You never even wanted the nut, you realise, it was the chocolate that you wanted all along! But you never got more than a taste. You never got to savour the chocolate in your mouth as it melts and slides down your throat. You see a guy selling lollypops from your bench. You don't really want one, you've never really though that paying for that kind of thing was right, but you know you won't be getting any chocolate for a while.
You buy one, and it erodes your taste buds. You wish you'd never wasted your money, because if you ever eat any chocolate again, it will be polluted with the memory of that one time you were so desperate for something sweet that you went and payed for it, instead of looking a bit harder in the box, or just going without until the season changed and the chocolates were hard and, though slightly deformed, you would be ecstatic to find one that you could simply put in your mouth.
That, my friend, is love.

Re: Define love.
Love is unconditional, that's what love is.
This is the most retarded concept I've ever heard.
If love is unconditional, then love is useless. If love is unconditional, then what you're saying is that you love everyone, regardless of what they've done to you or anyone else.
So when you say love is unconditional, you're really saying you love the rapists and the thieves and the murderers, regardless of what they do to you, because your love is unconditional, right? So how can you discriminate?
So if this is what you meant, you're just a liar. No big deal.
But if you actually meant, love is unconditional once you've given it to a particular individual, well, it really makes no difference. Because if it's unconditional then you must love them for no reason. If there was a reason then I'm fairly certain that qualifies as a condition.
If that's not what you meant at all, and you were describing love as some unattainable concept which can only be imagined, well then what the hell do you call what everyone else calls love? Then it starts to just be a word game and we all need to be clearer on our definitions.
I hope you can explain to me how love can be unconditional, I really do.

Re: Define love.
I hope you can explain to me how love can be unconditional, I really do.
My brother has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. I know that I can count on him for anything because he's always got my back and he knows that it's the same on my part. I have made many sacrifices for him and he has made many sacrifices for me as well. We look out for each other, you know, like brothers do.
He could turn into the most evil, self-serving, hateful son of a bitch in the world and I would still always look out for him. I love my brother no matter what. The same goes for the rest of my family and my friends.
Everyone pretty much agrees that love is wanting what's best for someone. What I'm saying is that love means you don't only love someone when you are happy with that person. If you truly love someone, you do good to them even if they have hurt you.
I don't think this is unattainable, either, but I think it's very rare. When most people talk about love, they are talking about someone making them feel good. They look for a long-term partner expecting someone who will make them happy 100% of the time.
The thing is, if both parties expect that they will suddenly be nothing but sunshine just from being around the other person, even if they are around each other 24/7 and are forced to come to terms with all of each other's irritating quirks and flaws... well, then neither participant is making any effort to love the other. They are expecting the other person to love them, and that's it.
What happens next is that love is not what they thought it would be. People get frustrated because they don't want to make any sacrifices. (Our society is INCREDIBLY selfish; have you noticed that?) They become disillusioned with the person they thought they loved because that person is not what they expected.
This is why over 50% of all modern marriages end in divorce.
Love is self-sacrifice. Unfortunately, we live in a society that emphasizes self-indulgence and instant gratification. Many of us never learn what self-sacrifice is. We learn how to satisfy our fleshy desires... and that's about it. Self-sacrifice is totally foreign to many people in the world today.
I don't think most people realize that love is actually an act of self-sacrifice. Think about the way a father loves his children. My father worked hard so that he could support all of us. He gave freely of everything he had in order to make our lives the best he possibly could, all without asking anything in return.
That's love.

Right. That's my point. It's not unconditional. The condition is: the person belongs to the group family/friends. Or to narrow it down to a specific example, the person is your brother. Further more, he's always had your back, that's another condition.
Even if you choose to disagree I think it's moronic. Sentimental, sure, and there's some merit to sentiment, but I just don't think loving someone for no reason is worthwhile.
Sure, you might have a reason now, but what if your brother started bringing home girls to rape. Young girls. You hear the screams from your bedroom, they keep you awake and night and even when they stop they echo in your mind.
Could you really love him? If so, then what's the point of loving anything if you love someone just because they're related to you and regardless of their actions?
Don't get me wrong, I think loving your brother is all well and good, but the concept of love as some unconditional and infinite force is ludicrous. It just doesn't make sense.

What I mean by "unconditional" is that I love him and I'm always going to no matter what.
Even if you choose to disagree I think it's moronic.
That is really too bad for you, then. If you would try being moronic for a little while you would realize that it's the only way to be.
Could you really love him?
Of course I could. I would hate his actions though and I'd turn him in for them.
That's what you do when you love someone.

It doesn't matter whether or not it makes sense. It's just the way things are.
It makes perfect sense to me. You love someone so you give freely of yourself to that person. The funny thing about love is that the more you love someone, the greater your capacity for loving someone is.

We're all adults here. Let's act like it, especially in a discussion about love. Thank you. :-)
I was trying to make the point that you can't deny objective reality just because you don't think it makes sense or you don't like it. I described something that's going to be the way it is whether it makes sense to you or not.
Also, in case you haven't noticed, there's absolutely nothing rational about love. It's actually irrational because if you give stuff up for other people all the time you are at an evolutionary disadvantage. Guess we should have died out thousands of years ago.

Eh? I was serious. If you say "it doesn't make sense, that's just the way it is" then you're pretty much avoiding any rational argument that I could possibly put forward. I'm not trying to deny objective reality, especially not because I think that it doesn't make sense and I don't like it. I've provided a perfectly rational argument but I'm yet to hear any sort of coherent rebuttal tht actually challenges any of the things I said. If you can provide me with a convincing argument, I'll be happy to believe you. Don't get me wrong this isn't some personal vendetta against love, it just doesn't make sense to be unconditional.
So don't treat me like I'm acting like a child, you made an appeal to a contradiction to prove your point, which negated your argument. Had I known you were arguing from such a flawed standpoint I never would've bothered.
Thank you. :-)

Re: Define love.
love is something we take for granted. some power we have and abuse.
i have loved and lost. and i still keep going. why? because love make me happiest.
'It started off so well
They said we made a perfect pair
I clothed myself in your glory and your love
How I loved you,
How I cried.....
The years of care and loyalty
Were nothing but a sham it seems
The years belie we lived a lie
"I'll love you 'til I die"
Save me Save me Save me
I can't face this life alone
Save me Save me Oh...
I'm naked and I'm far from home
The slate will soon be clean
I'll erase the memories,
To start again with somebody new
Was it all wasted
All that love?.....
I hang my head and I advertise
A soul for sale or rent
I have no heart, I'm cold inside
I have no real intent
Each night I cry, I still believe the lie
I'll love you 'til I die'

Re: Define love.
Love cant really be described its like if someone asks you to emotionally express how a rose smells many people are not gonna be able to think of anything cause there is nothing to explain it really

Re: Define love.
Love is many things, but one thing it is not is an emotion. Love is a choice you make. You choose to love somebody. You choose to care about them, to put them above everything and anything else. Love is the decision to care for an imperfect person in a perfect manner; to look at all their flaws and say "Fuck it. You're not perfect, I'm not perfect, but you make me happy, and I will do anything to preserve that." Not looking past the flaws, but looking straight at them, taking them for everything they are, the good and the bad, and choosing to care for them anyway.

Re: Define love.
Ok...now the monster is awake
It won't rest until there's nothing left
Maybe ever and anon
I forget about the pain
Someone bending light comes along
and flowers lean towards the sun
Some people fall in love and touch the sky
Some people fall in love and find Quicksand
I hover somewhere in between...I swear...
I can't make up my mind

Re: Define love.
To reveal yourself to someone fully, your flaws, your bad habits, your secrets, your extra toe, everything. To trust someone wholly, with all that is you, and only ask for their acceptance and affection.

Re: Define love.
Very potent affection. If I were going to write a dictionary, that's probably how I'd describe it.

Love is what you think it is, nothing more.
