Adderall and it's hold on me.
I recently turned 21 and I've been taking Adderall since I was 6. That is 15 fucking years of taking stimulants. Here is my predicament. I can't function without it. I am very intelligent. (28 ACT score) But when I try to stop taking it, it's like I'm lost in a fog and everything is confusing. It's not an addiction. I can stop taking it at any time, but I don't want to because I drastically effects my work and social skills. Any thoughts?

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.

As you probably know, Adderall is a "controlled" substance, so every month I have to go to my Doctor and pick up the paper prescription b/c it can't be sent electronically to the pharmacy. With work, it can often be difficult to get an appointment for a med check, plus a $30 copay, and $10 for the pills themselves can get a little pricey.

Hmm... you could try taking a break when you don't have obligations (idk if you go to school, summer vacation/spring break if you do) and practice functioning in the fog until you get used to it.

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
This is why drugs are useless we need to just attack the early symptoms of these disorders (ADD) by beating the hell out of our children and assuring them they are not special, maybe taking them out of the care of stupid mothers and eliminating their right to procreate. He is now a lifetime drug addict, did it treat the problem? Sure. Is he still fucked? Worse than he was before. What's the point of being able to succeed in school when you are addicted to a fucking drug for life. You can't stop OP, it's grown on you like wildfire. sorry fag, better luck next time.

You. Fog Boy. Don't get lost out there.
Honestly though. Get off the shit and accept that for the better part of the year the fog is going to be there. You aren't going to feel as smart as you think you are. You will suffer. You will become yourself again.

It pisses me off so much that we give shit like adderall to six year olds. Imagine how pissed everyone would be with you if you were arrested for smoking up a six a year old. Giving them powerful amphetamines is okay though.

God damn. This is one reason why I stopped taking that shit in 5th grade. I'm 17 now and I'm fine and happy, albiet lazy and unorganized, but I don't have to take strong amphetamines to function properly.
However, I still had to be in learning support for two years after I went off the stuff to teach me how to organize myself in school. (even though I'm technically gifted with a high IQ) That "fog" you speak of is quite distressing. It goes away after a while though once you realize how to deal with it.

You realize "gifted" is just another word for special needs kids when discussing their disability around them?
Best part is, most of them are so retarded don't even realize that they're not in fact "gifted" with a "high IQ" and are in fact being kept in a separate classroom doing "special" work because they're fucking stupid.
You know why you were diagnosed with ADD? BECAUSE YOU WERE TOO DUMB TO DO THE SCHOOLWORK LIKE ALL THE OTHER KIDS.
You know what that "fog" is? Thats your handicapped mind trying to function when NOT pumped full of amps.

Rem you are such a faggot, Adderall helps. You should not use it forever, or at a young age. You do have to know how to handle yourself without it. It isn't magic.
I am sure as hell not a "dumb kid" but I do have a trouble keeping on task, and prioritizing my work. I tried EVERYTHING before medication. It just works great, it isn't perfect, but what the fuck is? Just shut up already.

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
I am sure as hell not a "dumb kid" but I do have a trouble keeping on task, and prioritizing my work. I tried EVERYTHING before medication.
I find it funny, being given medication for not concentrating, and not prioritizing. What, do you think, keeps you from being able to concentrate? Why, do you think, are you priorities never what they "should" be? Who tells you what you priorities should be anyway?
Have you ever stopped to think about why you are unable to function "properly?" The cause of this problem that seems to trouble you so?
Perhaps a better solution than going to the doctor would have been to stop and look at the problem.
What priorities are out of place?
What are you concentrating on instead of what you "should" be? (ie. whats distracting you)
But nope, its off to the doc to get a fresh bottle of pills, that'll bring your school work up to standard, get your homework done. Hell, you might even find yourself able to find a book, and in the case that you do someday feel capable of such a task I suggest you pick up a copy of Brave New World. ;)

Are you completely inebriated or something?
It says IN THE POST YOU QUOTED that I tried everything before getting on meds. That DOES mean talking to my doc, counselors, teachers. There is just something about me (not an external factor) that makes it difficult to prioritize and organize.

Yeh, the fact that you're too fucking stupid to know what has to be done and when, and that you're incapable of actually finishing anything without medication, likely due to an absence of discipline in your childhood. Yeh, you tried talking to your doctor (lol) counselors (lol) and teachers, yup, you tried everything EXCEPT actually doing what you were meant to be doing, what everyone else was doing, and that is TRYING.
So what you're telling me that you are incapable to preforming the same simple tasks that millions and millions of other children can do not with ease, but with a bit of effort and hard work - something you're incapable of without shoving pills down your throat every day.
You're a fucking joke.
And mentally handicapped.

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
I know! Since millions of other people can perform great in school with no assistance, I must be retarded to want help! Especially if I can skip doses with no withdrawals, and it costs me nothing personally, just silly is it not?!
I put fucking effort into my work, amps or not. ADD is waayyyy over diagnosed, I agree, but there IS some kind of imbalance in my brain, and Adderall DOES help.
For 4 years I pretty much gave everything in school my all, with no medication. I did incredible on essays, tests, and creative work. But assignments that took up long chunks of my schedule were what was killing me. I tried harder, I pretty much drove myself insane fucking trying. You are such a fucking tool.

Read Brave New World, seriously. I recommend it.
I put fucking effort into my work, amps or not. Obiously not enough effort, seeing as you "have trouble keeping on task" (sounds like you're putting a lot of effort in there), and "prioritizing your work", so from the sounds of it you...can't be bothered to do the task at hand, and secondly don't do the "right" thing at the right time. Might I ask what you were doing or thinking about INSTEAD of your work in such a scenario? Probably more interesting things than schoolwork, right?
ADD is waayyyy over diagnosed, I agree, but there IS some kind of imbalance in my brain, and Adderall DOES help. So, what, you were born with this "imbalance"?
Did you think there was an imbalance in your brain BEFORE you had ever heard of ADHD or medication prescribed for it?

All else aside - You need to take stimulant drugs in order to do what I, and most other people can do normally. You are mentally inferior. You yourself admit that.

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
Yeah actually, I did feel that way before knowing about it being diagnosed. Eventually a teacher in 6th grade caught on and told me what ADD was, it matched what I felt.
And I don't think you know what prioritizing my work even means, I'm talking about having an ass ton of work to do, and ending up spending too much time killing all my little assignments, and in turn neglecting a large project.
Can't you just accept that your negative view on every one performing less than you academically is childish and
stubborn? You keep trying to guess all the factors in my life that make me a "fake" and a weak person, and failing.
I'm going to bed, being trolled hard makes me sleepy.

So basically what it comes down to is you being too stupid to know what has to be done and in which order, even though from the sounds of it you have been faced with such a situation multiple times. Are you incapable figuring out which order to do something in? Do you really need to pop stims every day? Fuck, you even seem to know what you're doing wrong - killing little assignments and neglecting bigger ones. If its that simple, why not just do it?
Can't you just accept that your negative view on every one performing less than you academically is childish and stubborn? You may be feeling the fog of the disorder that the pills were prescribed for. You could always discuss the issue with your doctor and see if you could try something else like another less potent med or a psychiatrist.
If you really want to stop the drug, it takes a good three months of not taking it for it to really get out of your system and your body to get back to "normal".

So, what, you were born with this "imbalance"?
Did you think there was an imbalance in your brain BEFORE you had ever heard of ADHD or medication prescribed for it?
This. A teacher of mine, in 5th or 6th grade, got a bunch of my other teachers together and brought my mom in for a meeting. They said that they thought I had "ADD". Thankfully, my mom called bullshit right then and there, and told the teachers to shove it up their asses. I would probably be just like the OP, if not a little more hopeful.
OP: Good luck man, all I can say is taper off, and get used to it. Eat healthy, sleep a good 8 hours each night, exercise, and you'll be good. Trust me. Also look into nootropics, like Ginkgo Biloba, Siberian Ginseng, that kind of stuff. Also search BLTC for JoePedo's Phenylalanine Cocktail; I know you will find a goldmine of info you can use there for your situation.

Okay, so let us take Kelvin Low; A guy that struggles to hold his shit together in day to day life, has a meaningless, same-steps-every-day factory processing job that still challenges him even though he has been there for twenty years, has a hard time reading anything more complex than the McDonalds menu, lives in a bedsit and is content going home each day, popping his frozen dinner in the microwave and settling down in front of the TV till he falls asleep every night and has no other redeeming features or interests- you're telling me that this dullard is no less intelligible than say, just for a lazy topical example, Barack Obama?
You sound like someone who had 'difficulties' in high school and can't quite seem to reconcile that there is very obvious differing levels of intelligence between people.

All else aside - You need to take stimulant drugs in order to do what I, and most other people can do normally. You are mentally inferior. You yourself admit that.
maybe he is mentally inferior, but I bet from the way you are being an asshole to some random guy on totse, I'm assuming you have self esteem issues, damn, dont you wish there was a pill for that? If he says he cant function in the real world without medication, then that's fine with me. If adderal is used properly the health effects other than possible addiction aren't very bad.
What IS wrong with adderal is that is widley over prescribed and under controlled and fucks up lives, kinda like it fucked up the op's life.
And OP, I wish you luck in quitting adderal, seems like you need it.
fag.

I scored an 85 on the IQ test. The test is obviously flawed because I couldn't actually be that retarded.. I think.

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
I tried taking medication for ADD. In my opinion, adderall did the best. After my sports medicine teacher asked me where I was from - because I talked and acted so much differently than others- I decided to stop taking medication for ADD period.
I know I have ADD. I think differently then others. Big deal. I don't think I need to be high off amphetamine salts to think like everyone else says I should.
My recommendation for kicking your speed habit is either quitting cold turkey or weening yourself off the stuff.
ADD and ADHD are very real. It doesn't mean you're intellectually inferior to others. Einstein had ADD, anyone wanna venture to call him intellectually inferior?
Most people actually have ADD or ADHD at one point in their life, most either grow out of it, or it's subtle enough to go undiagnosed.

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
And mentally handicapped.
you're seriously a fucking loser lol

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
Figured I'd throw in my two cents before one of the mods wakes up and locks this crap hole.
ADHD is grossly overdiagnosed in kids. Your memory of the time at which you were diagnosed and any time prior to that is probably not half as accurate as you believe.
Sure, you might've had some problems with school, lots of kids do. Maybe you even really had ADHD. Crazy thing is, doesn't matter what the problem was: IF YOU GIVE ANYONE AMPHETAMINE, THEY'RE GONNA BE MORE MOTIVATED AND ORGANIZED AND BETTER AT SCHOOL.
So, indubitably, you were, and thus thought the treatment was helping your condition. Sixteen years? My god, man. Of course youre addicted, both physically and psychologically. In your case, it seems like the psychological is whats hanging you up.
Practice makes perfect. Take one day off and try to function, then go back on the amps. Next week, take two days off. Do that for awhile until you can stop completely.
You are going to experience troubles with organization and cognitive function. Its up to you to make a judgement as to whether or not it's worth getting of the drugs.

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
The key issue with ADD isn't intelligence or discipline and motivation. If you think that people who take medication for ADD aren't as mentally strong, resilient, or intelligent as "normal" people, you are very much mistaken. It has to do with arousal and concentration and it has been shown by empirical and quantitative data from fMRI, EEG, PET scans, genetic biomarkers, that there is a biological basis for this. Simply put, people with ADD are less aroused by what is going on and therefore jump around with their thoughts because they can't focus on something that doesn't hold their interest.
I am smart as fuck (I say that with some degree of ego) and managed my way through highschool and got accepted to an Ivy League university without the aid of stimulants but I knew since I was very young that my mind seemed to work faster than most people and I understood quickly material that took a lot of effort for others and it became mundane to me, preventing me from concentrating.
This might not be the case with all people diagnosed with AD(H)D, but dopamine agonists allow me to tune into things that I would ordinarily find boring or repetitive and is thus something that helps me. I really don't care about the label of ADD, just that one must do whatever works because people have different neurochemistry and some are not conducive to the demands of society and culture.
I wish I didn't need anything to help me focus but I've tried meditation and that seems to help a little bit, but adderall works for me (not perfectly, always some unwanted effects).
I am going to try neurofeedback pretty soon as im doing research related to mood and psychological states with EEG and trying to find ways to "train" my mind to access different states without drugs.
Just to point out something interesting, there are some researchers in the psychedelic community that claim they can feel states almost identical to MDMA at will without the use of drugs, using neurofeedback.

Re: Adderall and it's hold on me.
Ive been taking 30mg adderall for about 6 years now. I recently stopped taking it. Honestly, I hate the shit and I hate tweaking. I dont see how you can stand it, But, my mother is a speed junkie and I have to hide my pills from her or she steals them. Its a sad day when your mom comes to you crying saying she will give you 100 dollars a pill. Good luck with the addiction btw.

He has a point though. Your parents should have beaten you.
That doesnt work, I got beat for 11 years and all it did was make me put crushed glass in my stepdads food. That guy is a fucking cocksucker.

Yeah, you can control pretty much everything that goes on in your body if you teach yourself how. I know I can make my body metabolize a lethal dose of fentanyl quickly enough to suffer no damage. I've actually deliberately ingested fatal doses just to test this.
The whole point of drugs is to take the easier way out, though.
But anyways, like i said before, homie is just habituated to adderall. He can learn to function without it, but he'll never be as organized or motivated as he would be with it. And that has zip to do with him, personally. Anybody is gonna do better at that shit if theyre popping absurd doses of amphetamine.
Dude, I misread before my first response. 15 years? Christ, how much are you taking daily? The tolerance must be absurd. I know this girl who's prescribed 60mg a day, and she's only been on it like 3-5yrs.

There are many prescription meds for ADD. You have to find the right one for you in terms of how long it lasts, how well it makes you concentrate, appetite and sexual suppression, the crash, etc. I'm not sure what kind of street amphetamine you're talking about and I don't have that much experience with them, but if it's meth, I would not use it for ADD. Ritalin and it's timed-release Concerta, Adderall IR and timed-release Adderall XR, Dexedrine (good luck getting prescribed that) and the newest Vyvanse (Dexedrine XR basically) are the ones I recommend trying.
Ritalin can be really fucking addictive especially when you realize you can get a coke-like rush if you snort it. I find that it doesn't help me concentrate that well. Adderall will help you study and feel good, but there is a crash if you take more than 20-30mg (no tolerance). Vyvanse is like Adderall except much smoother, long lasting, and no crash really. It's probably the best for the first few times, but taken regularly, you won't feel a magical high anymore, but it should still help you feel calm inside.
I take adderall because it helps me concentrate on work, feel better socially, optimistic. Also for recreational value. Only bad part is the comedown but I have benzos for that.
The real issue of discipline comes in here because you should not take recreational doses of any of these drugs more than twice a week because then you'll need to dose even more just to get the medicinal value.
