Default Barack Obama Defeats John McCain

(The other topics made so far on this were closed owing to being one liners or spam.)

Barack Obama defeated John McCain tonight with a popular vote margin of 51-49%% as of this posting. The electoral margin is shaping up to be substantially larger. I believe the post mortem on this election will include heavy speculation that the major force this year was the economic crisis that materialised in the closing months and proved in the end to be an insurmountable obstacle for John McCain. I would also add that McCain was in many ways hoisted with a petard of his own creation: that being campaign finance reform. McCain's decision to walk the walk on the financing system that he helped to develop with Russ Feingold and to opt into public funding cut off many fundraising resources that his campaign could very much have used, compared with Obama's spectacular fundraising efforts, which have garnered him the largest campaign warchest in American electoral history. Last, but not least, credit must be given to the incredible personality of Obama himself. This man has demonstrated a bulletproof charm and an ability to think on his feet that allowed him to blunt many of the attacks levelled at him while maintaining a Presidential appearance. Partisan Republicans may regret having chosen John McCain as their nominee (as a Republican, I must admit I didn't vote for him in the primary), but I would suggest that given the climate of this electoral season (trend lines have been in favour of Democrats all year) and the damage to the Republican brand in general owing to the unpopularity of the Bush Administration, it's hard to imagine any other candidate having come as close as McCain managed. That is largely because McCain was one of few Republicans who could plausibly distance themselves from Bush because of his "maverick" reputation. One interesting thing to note is that while Democrats picked up several house seats and two senate seats, they were not able to secure the filibuster-proof majority they had hoped for, so while Obama will unquestionably have a broad mandate throughout much of his first term, it will not be carte blanche. At this point I invite discussion on this evening's events.

They may also end up dropping a senate seat later on depending their final solution to "the Lieberman question".

uhh..there's another side to that. While you're saying that the prospect of a black president was irresistable to people, the prospect of a black president was terrifying to lots of people too.

They may also end up dropping a senate seat later on depending their final solution to "the Lieberman question".Well, it's Lieberman's decision to caucus with the Democrats. He was already defeated in the Democratic primary (thus the I beside his name), but given that he was vocally in support of McCain this season, I think he may end up caucusing with Republicans if the Democratic party decides, as I'm fairly confident they will, to punish him further for his insubordination.

Yes, pretty much.
There doesn't seem to be much point to keeping him after all. They have a substantive majority. They'll fall short of making it fillibuster proof, so why bother with him? if they were just on 60 sure, but there's just no point. (and he's likely to vote however he pleases regardless of caucus anyway)

I don't think anything is likely to happen to Barack Obama. The Secret Service is aware of the risks. They've spent the last four year's guarding George Bush, who has been at an arguably greater risk of assassination, given his general unpopularity. I am certain that Obama will be one of the most well-guarded presidents in history.

I totally agree with you +Casper+, I do think that OBAMA is the fucking ANTI-CHRIST! He is a vicious wolf in sheeps clothing!

Watch and see, he will fuck us over.

Obama is not gonna save you. The gov't is not gonna un-corrupt itself overnight under an obama administration. I can't help but laugh at all of you who think this is going to be the end-all of evil in America. WAKE THE FUCK UP, YOU MINDLESS CONDITIONED IDIOTS. I'm sorry, I know thats harsh, but its necessary. BOTH candidates, McCain AND Obama are BOTH bought and paid for candidates. They're both New World Order scum. Let me cover the not so obvious facts of this bullshit we're currently facing. Obama is against the second amendment Obama is NOT going to shut down the borders to stop illegal immigration Obama is NOT going to support a new investigation into 911 Obama is NOT going to save you any money with all his new programs he plans to implement - so stop all this bullshit saying taxes will be cut. Thats a fucking lie and you know it. Obama is NOT going to repeal the patriot act, or get us out of Iraq, or fix the economy. Obama serves a very simple purpose. His job is to make the people trust the government again - put a new happy face on the old system of corruption, control, and evil. If you can't see this, then I really feel bad for you. This is all besides the fact that your vote is fucking meaningless. The act of voting is purely symbolic. Do you want the puppet on the left, or the puppet on the right? Do you want the old shriveled dried up turd, or the pile of shit that is fresh and still steaming? Either way, You get SHIT. The electoral college chooses the president anyway, Not you. This is all predetermined. If you want to vote for Obama, you go right ahead and do that. But don't expect anything in this country to change for the better. When you choose the lesser of two evils, you still get evil. We need REAL change, not canned marketed "Obama" change. The bottom line is, were fucked until we have a real, true democracy.

I truly do beleive that OBAMA is the fucking ANTI-Christ and I expect many things to happen in the near future. None being pro-society, nor pro-american. He's a fucking mole thats been burrowing in our system for some time now, they are now going to take our country down from the inside out, like they had stated and like they will do.

Fuck. I need a beer.Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

This victory shows that Americans are wanting reason, pragmatism, science, and logic to dominate in the 21st century. We now know that Reaganomics is bullshit, and we have a change to seriously invest in our future.

I'm going to university with plans to get my Ph.D. I want to be a researcher in academia. So, and Obama win was absolutely crucial to my ability to carry out well funded and well respected research. GO SCIENCE! I'm so excited that I have the change to make history with my discoveries, thanks to a federal government that is behind my dreams. =)

I find it hilarious that you think Obama is the Anti-christ considering the rapture has to come before the Anti-christ. I haven't seen a rapture, unless no one on earth was worthy to go with jesus.

I have a lot of trouble finding any mention of the rapture in the Bible.

The book of revelations says something about saving certain members of the 12 tribes of Israel, but I really don't think that applies the way everyone seems to think it does.

The rapture isn't in the bible, but neither is the Anti-christ. They are part of another story brought to you by the religious reich, which is all a bunch of lies anyways.

Actually I think McCain would have had a much better chance had he had a better running mate. My biggest fear about him winning was that he would die in a year or two and Sarah Palin would become president and she's a fucking MORON!!!!

Indecently, I am an Obama supporter, but I have no illusions that he'll cure all our ills with Magick. Far from it, I only believe he's our best hope left, at least for now. Maybe someday there will actually be The One.

The Anti-Christ must come from the middle east, out of the mediterranean Sea.

Barack was born of a white woman from Wichita, Kansas and a black man from Kenya. His birth took place in Hawaii.

A black/white hawaiian =/= Middle Eastern born man.

"1 I beg you, by the Pre-Tribulation Rapture promise of Christ,
2 That you don't worry if you "hear by letter" that you are in the 7 year Great Tribulation of God's wrath
3 Don't be decieved. The Tribulation doesn't come until after the world wide events of the Great resurrection and rapture, which removes the righteous and leaves only those in rebellion and apostacy, which allows for the revealing of the AntiChrist,
4 Who says he is God, and who will sit in the temple and declare claim to be God.
5 Don't you remember this doctrine I told you already?
6 And now you know why the AntiChrist is not yet revealed to the world
7 Yes, the AntiChrist is working, but not fully, because you are still here, preventing his works by your prayers, until the rapture, when you will be taken out of the way.
8 And then the AntiChrist will come out of hiding, and the Lord will destroy him. "

7 Yes, the AntiChrist is working, but not fully, because you are still here, preventing his works by your prayers, until the rapture, when you will be taken out of the way.
8 And then the AntiChrist will come out of hiding, and the Lord will destroy him. "

Here you go, some proof that your don't know what you are talking about, and there is alot more where that came from. So please do keep talking nonsense.

uhm ya... anti-Christ and pre-trib aren't mentioned in the bible.

You're using a misguided version that re-wrote the Bible. In revelation anyone that adds to his book gets to burn in hell forever. Hope you like the feeling of falling and the sounds of wailing and gnashing of teeth, bottom feeder.

And. Why exactly is Obama the best thing for America? Because he wants to keep the soldiers in Iraq longer? Or maybe because he wants more troops in Afganistan....? Hello. What policy is good for America. Oh let me guess that one where America gives billions to Israel , but in return we get terrorism.

The funny thing is i am a teenager this was my first year voting.
At college i see all these kids wear tshirts with obama on it bc its the new fashion and all the black kids wanted him elected bc they want to make history and have a black president.
I did not fall into the "obama trend" though.
I feel like the only kid saying this but i do not support any of his plans.
America is about freedom and to me his plans our socialist.
I hope for the best.

perhaps you need to educate yourself about what socialism means

Thank you. I live in virginia and one of my neighbors had a huge "socialism is anti-american" sign on the front lawn.

Fucking idiots. They don't even know what they're scared of. No first-world nation, including the US, functions without socialism. Radically free-market countries nearly up to the standards of the chicago school of economics and milton friedman's faggot ass have failed to bring about the social prosperity they promise. Indonesia, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, and a few others have shown consistently in their experiments with libertarian economics, and also the US during the great depression, what happens when markets aren't regulated enough. Power and money concentrates in the hands of the few, just like China. Communism and libertarianism are means to the same end: an elite ruling class. The US' recent venture into corporatism and the insane amount of taxpayer money being handed over to inefficient contractors is a good indicator of that. Cheney helping his halliburton pals out, hank paulson bailing AIG because goldman sachs had 20 billion invested in it, but letting lehman brothers fail. Not to mention his juicy privilege of selling his stock tax free in return for blessing our economy with his guidance Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Also, those evil socialist europeans sure seem to enjoy more social liberties than I do. A lower drinking age, laxer drug laws with even legalized pot in some places, and no california proposition 8 gay marriage ban bullshit.

fucking this

I love how when republicans get backed into a corner, they start spewing up random garbage(lawl trying to revive the Red Scare of the 50's) so their dude gets in office.
Also, the government has had a lot more say in the everyday lives of citizens under the Bush republicans than under any other administration, so fuck everybody who voted McCain to "shrink" the government.

It's ok though, to think the night before the election I was contemplating moving to England.

Fuck. I need a beer.Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

theecorporateimposter, i was wondering what website or spam email you had pulled that off of? but seriously, your histrionics are unqualified and sophomoric. how many people do you think believe that obama will fix everything and we will live in a perfect world? i voted for obama, but not because i believe he is some kind of messianic figure. i think it is easy to stereotype all supporters of a candidate in order to not really think about issues in a pragmatic way. all you are doing is making excuses not to do anything.

as far as your lesser of two evils argument goes, you might have a point, but i don't think it holds up to well. if someone put a gun to your head and gave you the options of either eating shards of glass or cutting yourself lightly on the arm with a knife, would you say to the person "no, i'm sorry, i won't do either of these things because both will hurt me?" i really doubt that you would do that, given the circumstances. i think that you would take the less painful option.

in any case, you are the one who comes across as idealistic. no, sorry, you can't live in a perfect world. there will still be corruption in politics, officials will still screw up policy decisions, you will still fuck up as well, but you have to keep going. grow up and stop spewing your vacuous shit.

Hahaaaa. This is why McCain supporters can blame no one other than themselves. I agreed with McCain on gun issues, but that's just because I believe that is an issue an individual should decide. All this quasi-zealous shit being spewed around about abortion and gay rights (I've even seen people trying to draw evidence from Sodom and Gomorrah haha)
and how America should be based on the bible is ridiculous. In a society that is supposed to be based on freedom and choice, how can you say one religion should dictate the entire society? You know what that means don't you? Yep, McCain supporters are like Al Quada (I'm making a point and not actually saying McCain supporters are terrorists.)

See how ridiculous this shit can get?

Edit: Just f.y.i, I was brought up christian and still believe in treating others kind even if it may or may not guarantee you wings and all that good stuff. All I'm saying is that in today's world you can't just try to impose the will of ONE religion unless you accept that, by that logic, you should also worship cows or some shit.

Besides the economic crisis and being tarred with the same brush as Bush (the Bush Brush), I think another big factor contributing to the downfall of McCain's campaign was picking Palin as his running mate. In doing so he completely mooted all arguments about Obama being inexperienced and knowing relatively little about foreign affairs, and some of the things she came out with must have scared all but the most hardcore republican fan base.

Finally--someone in the White House worthy of trust and respect.

I haven't felt this good about an election since Dick Thornburgh was re-elected governor of PA, and I was one of his two thousand close friends with him that night at campaign headquarters in the Philadelphia Hilton.

4 or 8 years of continued economic policy that the world has right now and your democrats will be out on there ass and you'll get a Ron Paul type guy in there and fix everything, cutting government atleast in half and changing monetary policy. Obama might luck out and the multi trillion dollar siphon of money going into the markets by the central banks of the world will keep this monetary system going for another 8 years. But The young people of today will see this system fail, and be replaced. Its too bad the US couldnt lead the way now, being the largest economy and the worlds reserve currency. Rather then later when the collapse of the markets will be much worse then if we let it happen now.

I'd blame Palin and his campaign staff:

It sounded like he almost wanted to wage a clean campaign, but he let his staff have too much power.

wow. your rebuttal is great. maybe you should run for office.

i've come across a lot of mccain supporters that think there is such a thing as the anti-christ. that must mean, according to your logic, that all of the people who voted for mccain believe that obama is the antichrist. i would rather be duped by someone who speaks to my inclination for hope rather than my inclination for fear. in any case, you are guilty of a logical fallacy by assuming that, because you have seen a certain number of people who support obama believe these things, that must mean that everyone who voted for him buys into that shit too. that is not true. so you can ramble on if you want, briefly glimpse at parts of the truth.

perhaps my analogy was extreme and ill-suited, but i think that it puts across the message that, when faced with two possibilities, one of which must be chosen, you go with the lesser of two evils. that was in response to your initial statement of "its shit either way, so fuck everything"-which sounds like some nihilistic pubescent indulgence. you give me further evidence of your intellectual development with the last line.

as i stated before but in a somewhat different way, you might want to let your balls drop before you start making any sort of grand meta-narratives about the politics in the us. until that happens, please shut the fuck up.

only reason that SOB got into office is the blacks on welfare with nothing to do during the day voting him in. The white people had to work that day of the week so not everybody had the chance to vote. AND he was backed by some fucking billionare and that's why you only heard his ads on the radio, his impossible promises about everything, literally. Mccain had to get his money the old fashioned way. All people that know whats good for this country voted for Mccain, he has experience, both in the military, and in life, unlike obama (uncapitalized) is only like 35 and a state senator for 2 years. Obama is the worst thing to come to America, he talks the good talk and thats it, don't let him fool you, he ain't for hunters or gun rights, George Washington is rolling over in his grave right now. We are fucked and we don't realize how bad. Border patrol, healthcare, Iraq, small businesses. He's a fucking mole thats been burrowing in our system for some time now, he is now going to take our country down from the inside out, like he had stated and like he will do.

He wants to disarm The U.S.A., look at Delaware, Washington, DC, crime rates are high as hell now. IF GUNS ARE OUTLAWED, ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS. OBAMA DON'T GET THIS. If you enforce the laws you have now, you won't have these problems. This country and her freedom was founded on the minutemen, and the people owning guns. Lookup Minute man. If there is a terrorist attack or some other event, the first defense/offense America has is its armed citizens. Obama doesn't understand that if he outlaws people using guns to lawfully defend their house, country, themselves, he is losing the biggest/freesest assest in this country.. ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS CAUSE THEY DON'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT THE LAWS IN PLACE.

McCain is a 90% Bush clone that wants to bomb Iran, spend 100 years in Iraq, and freeze funding in everything but defense. His policies are fucking horrible.

As far as the gun issue goes, you're absolutely correct. if guns are outlawed, it just plays into the hands of people with a gutsy disregard for convention better we know today as "criminals".
